With guys like Goc, Bergie, and Matthias possibly injured the lineup is going to be odd. I wonder if they try to sign a veteran to a one year deal since it's a shortened season. Who that is, I don't know. Sturm has been working out with them regularly so I wouldn't be shocked if he gets signed for some depth. Of course, guys like Shore, Howden, and other AHL players will have a shot. The short training camp is going ot be interesting. Once this CBA is signed we're going to see a flurry of activity.

Getting off to a winning start will be more important than ever.

Kovalev lol.

what is everyones realistic expectations for huberdeau i'd say in a 50 game season if he can put up 20-30 points i'd be happy.

also depends what line he plays on and how much power play time

I'd say 20-25 pts. for Huby.

any word on how long bergy will be out for or is he ready? and if matthias is out as well i have the lineup as:

Fleischmann-Weiss-Versteeg (obviously)
Huberdeau-Goc-Mueller (wanna keep both mueller and huberdeau on the wings)
Kopecky-Santorelli-Upshall (or Upshall-Kopecky-Skille, theres so many different combos you can do for this line)
Parros-Smithson-Skille

Campbell-Kuba
Kulikov-Weaver
Jovanovski-Gudbranson/Ellerby/Strachan

Goc just got injured, he won't be back until around February.

Should the Panthers use their amnesty buyout on Jovo?

With 3 years left, I don't see it. Plus, Gudbranson is not going to be in top form right off the bat. If we suffer another injury, Jovo will be useful. I don't see us exercising any buyouts. Let the S.A. kids continue to develop where they should, and save our money.

They way I understand it is that you can use them after June. So basically Jovo would be playing this shortened season and if bought out, we'd be buying out his last two years.

And if that is indeed correct, I'd go ahead and do it. Ellerby can take over next season and Robak would have 3 full AHL seasons under his belt.

I don't see any way we don't buy out Jovo. He's been a steady veteran presence mentally for the team, and will be for this shortened season. However, he's slowing down, and I imagine that will only continue. It seems like a no brainer to buy him out and have some nice cap room to make some moves. We have a lot of D prospects, and I imagine one or two will be ready for next season. If not, we can always sign a vet to a cheaper, one year deal. Just my opinion of course.

Oh, next summer yeah. I'd expect that if Jovo's play doesn't get better. We gotta make room for Ellerby, and Robak might be ready to be in the top 7 as well.

He lives here in the off season. He has been working out in a local gym with a trainer and he has been working very hard. He has also been at Incredible Ice for morning workouts.

The interesting part of what they said is that the players would have had to contact Management pretty early in thismorning to tell them how good he looks considering they could not have contact with management (except for that one window a few months ago).

Thats the first thing I thought when I read that!

I feel kinda bad for Jovo that everyone likes to bash him since he's on the way down with his career, but everyone forgets that it wasn't Jovo who offered himself that blatantly overpaid contract.

I don't see a buyout happening. More likely that Jovo understands and admits to himself that he isn't the player he used to be, loses passion for the game and retires. Now since he's on a +35 contract, even if Jovo retires his caphit would stay, thou no actual money would be paid to him. My guess is it's this during the 2014 summer or he's staying for the duration of the contract.

My comment about Jovo wasn't bashing him for his contract. I know he was a great player once but I fully believe that he had lost his stride last year and even the year before playing for the Coyotes. Yes he put in a few decent performances in the playoffs but other than that I didn't think he really added anything to the team. Obviously he has experience but is that enough?

The other problem is also that he was really poor at the start of the season, obviously taking a number of games to get up to pace which is something that could be that much worse this year with the extended break due to the lockout. Which is something we cannot afford due to the lower number of games making every game more important.

I think he will be done at the end of this season. Would be nice if we could remove his salary from our cap instead of a buyout, although I don't think that will be possible. Plus there is always the chance he surprises me this year and proves me wrong, which would be the best outcome.

Yes, NHL Hockey is back:-D.
Hopefully the Panthers will play a game in Vancouver, while I pass 3 months there. I would love to see Weiss and co. beating the nucks.

The buyout wouldn't count against the cap, but the players' share of revenues. But we'd still have to pay him the actual money.

I wasn't meaning buying him out, I was meaning if he retired after this season. As he is on a 35+ contract so we are liable for his 4.125m until 2015. Would just be interesting to see if that could be wiped out instead of an amnesty buyout.

Something to remember is John Sim is playing with the Rampage right now, and doing quite well. It's very possible that he gets signed with his recent play. If we're a little short up front, he could be a good 2-way signing, if he'd comply.

Lets start with a lineup. I think the top 2 lines are probably already set if you look at it right now:

Flash - Weiss - Steeger
Upshall - Huberdeau - Mueller

Last yr's top line stays together, no reason to break them up right now. The comments made by both Tallon & Dineen suggest that 2nd line will be what happens at the start of the season. Huberdeau still needs to get bigger and as I believe MR said earlier in this thread, he'd be killed along the boards right now. Upshall can help protect him in that aspect with his physical play and Mueller is the perfect guy to have Huby feed pucks to.

The injuries to some of the bottom line guys are gonna make things interesting in camp for those other 2 lines. We definitely need to hear how everyone is doing with healing right now to say but I think the other 2 lines are gonna be a mix & match thing until everyone returns. Initially I think its gonna be something like:

Kopecky - Santorelli - Skille
Parros - Smithson - Rheault

Santorelli is basically a fill-in for now but he's shown he has skills to score and pairing him with some physical players should help him as well (maybe this works to our advantage to showcase him for a trade). Skille may actually benefit from being elevated a line and did well playing overseas during the lockout. I had trouble filling the last spot in the lineup because we ran out of healthy players actually. But Rheault has been leading the Rampage in scoring most of this yr and he's got decent physicality and deserves a call-up IMO. Here's what I'm figuring once everyone is healthy again:

Bergy - Goc - Kopecky (no reason to break this line up)
Parros - Matthias - Smithson/Santorelli

Defense is gonna be interesting to say the least. I think Kulikov signs a 1 yr quickie deal to just play this yr (something around probably $2.5M is my guess). I think he has a chance to prove how much a part of the core he is that way. If he cant take hold of a top pairing spot this yr, I'm gonna start to think that he may not be here long term. And if he makes it difficult for Tallon to get him signed quickly and makes some big demands, I think Tallon would probably see what the market is for him. For now, here's what I'm thinking they try out initially:

Campbell - Kulikov
Kuba - Weaver
Jovo - Ellerby/Strachan

I know people will notice that Guds is not in that lineup. And I think Tallon may take a cautious approach with him and let him get in game shape in the AHL first since he was just cleared for contact last week. Give him 2 weeks in the minors and see how he does (also would give the Rampage a replacement for Strachan). Ellerby & Strachan will fight it out for that last spot on defense and even they may end up paired together at times to give Jovo a maintenance day in a shortened schedule this yr. Once Guds returns, I'd like to see him take Weaver's spot and push Weaver down to pair up with Jovo/Ellerby/Strachan. That looks like a balanced enough defense for me.

Goalies are self evident so I wont even bother with that. Markstrom is staying in the AHL this season, let him finish what he started and have a full season in the AHL under his belt before bringing him up next season.

I love how people seem to think Guds needs to "get in shape" more then the rest of our team that have also not been playing.. :)

Keep in mind that the rest of our team were cleared to play with some contact while Guds was not. It does take time to return from a shoulder injury when you havent played with any contact. All Guds could do for the last few weeks is skate. The rest of the guys have been playing 3 days a week in informal practices/workouts. Guds will definitely still need to get in GAME shape more than the rest of the team.

The GDT ideas are whirring back to life. I honestly thought there was not going to be a season this year and I'll believe it once I see new games being played again.

Assuming the season starts on the 19th, I get to play the unfortunate game of: Wife got me a Hanukkah gift for Seinfeld tickets on that night vs. going to opening night. Either way, hockey coming back is so big, the Dolphins at least kept me going for a little while.

so goc, matthias, and bergenheim are all injured? that sucks!! i mean id prefer to keep huberdeau at lw, but with these injuries they may very well try him at center, or put mueller there. either way, for now, the flash-weiss-steeger line will obviously stay together, and whether its hubs or mueller centering it, the 2nd line will probably consist of huberdeau-mueller-upshall, leaving santorelli and kopecky on the 3rd with either howden or skille. and parros, smithson, and a call up/skille on the 4th. plus guds will probably start in the ahl just because of the injury and the transition would be better if he started a few w/ san antonio. so no goc, bergy, matthias, guds, hopefully these arent long term but with a short season thats a little scary.

and if we can buy out jovo and have it not go against the cap, i dont know how the 35+ rule plays in all of this, but if we can use 1 of our amnesty buyouts on him and have it not go against the cap, and he doesnt play well this year, im alllll for it this summer.
