There were a number of examples why I prefer Rakell with Sid tonight. Puck goes to the point and all the 5’11” forwards are easily boxed out, so d-man tries to hold for a second or two to get some traffic and it never comes. So the pressure comes and it’s either an easy save, turnover, or dumped back around.

Jake was absolutely invisible tonight, which I mean is what it is with a guy whose only job is to score goals and they don’t get any.

L1 just always seems to have one guy out of whack on a given night.

11 points in 35 games is a pace of 26 points per season. That's not moving the needle with the bottom-6 whatsoever.

That rate woulda topped all bottom-sixers last year and probably would this year too. What more do you want from a bottom-sixer?
If you want the guy to get more points, you gotta boost the minutes? That's how things work.

We missed by 2 points, and look to be bubble level again. Every little bit of improvement is critical.
This narrative about slight improvements being irrelevant for the team needs to die. It's not intelligent. Please stop.

Per 60 production stats are useless to evaluate players because point production doesn't remain at a constant rate with more ice time. Fabien Zetterlund had a 2.96 5v5 points/60 in 160 minutes of ice time in 2021-2022 and then had 1.47 5v5 points/60 in 820 minutes in 2022-2023.

Zohorna is in WBS' top-6 right now and has 0 points.

Sorry Jeff, nothing personal. Erik Karlsson was on the table. And he had three points tonight.

3 points in a loss.

Sounds like EK65 all last season too. Can't at all see that repeating /s

Team just isn't built well and definitely not coached well.

If you wankers recall, I called this loss.

Standard is the unfortunate standard with a dipshit for a coach. Keep watching though, maybe you lot will lose your shit just enough to pretend this is normal now.

Detroit didn't have much more. Pens led 34-32 in 5-on-5 shot attempts after two periods. High danger chances were 7 apiece.

Detroit simply converted off of Pens mistakes.
We're supposed to be better than Detroit though. The Pens very clearly had another gear in them, and only chose to use it in the 3rd.
It's frustrating to watch. They were lucky Ned held the fort in the first 2 periods of the last game, because it was the same damn thing.
I don't understand the lack of urgency. All these points are critical.

I have noticed that even the overtly homerish Pens media has already started pointing out that the bottom 6 still sucks and doesn’t score AT ALL. I imagine Dubas will make moves. Doesn’t have many trade chips, but maybe some change of scenery guys will fair better than the garbage we are seeing so far

Bottom-6 guys should be cheap, especially since practically anybody is an upgrade at this point.

That's a good thing, because this team doesn't have shit to trade.

I don't believe that for a second.

That's not how I took it. Just that his circumstances haven't seemed to improve much.

And that was my predicted result on Sunday. Go unhinge yourself.

So you give me points relative to game counts when guys get under 10 minutes, and judge the player off that. Then you tell me that production relative to usage doesn't matter?
There's leeway for his production rate to drop and still be significantly better than what we'll get from our crap this year. He's at 1.93. We're likely gonna have the 1.10-1.20 types again this year unless changes are made.

I never cared about his AHL stats, because he plays well up here. Why do you?
If there's no carry-over then who gives a f***?

Detroit is a bubble playoff team. They're going to beat good opponents.

The Pens are an aging playoff team. They're going to lose to bad teams.

It's hockey.

We're all right there with you, but it's Wednesday and most of us love this bullshit.
How DOC has a leash so long is mind boggling. The one youngish guy that they leave in the lineup and he just does nothing very good. I’ve never understood what anyone sees in him.
Again, DOC is the least of the bottom sixs issues.

Fabien Zetterlund was one of the top NHLers in points/60 at 5v5 in a small sample size in 2021-2022, where he had a 2.93 5v5 points/60 in 160 minutes of TOI. Guess what he did in a full time role in 2022-2023? A 1.47 5v5 points/60.

Zohorna has a strong 5v5 production rate because it's an asininely small sample size, and 5v5 production rate isn't indicative of talent level to begin with.

Alex Belize was a 31 year old career AHLer who got into 31 games with Montreal last year, where he had 14 5v5 points in 338 minutes for a 5v5 points/60 of 2.49. He wasn't even retained by Montreal after the year and is playing on NYR's AHL team.

Serious Q - If you're that displeased with the direction of the team and Sullivan's coaching, why spend so much energy continuing to watch? Why not take a step back and wait to see if they make a change that you approve?

Like, I hated the Rick Kehoe/Edzo years. Couldn't stand the "x-generation" crap with a bunch of nobodies. I kept tabs on the team, watched some games, but if they were getting smoked or Edzo's smugness was getting to me, I just turned it off.

Not telling anyone how to be a fan. But I've just never been one to stay as invested if watching made me that unhappy.

They fought back from a 4-1 deficit so that's something. They also dug that hole in the second period.

Idk it sucked they lost, but for some reason it feels better than loses did last year.
we have the depth to make changes. if sully rides this for 10 more games i’ll get mad. this wasn’t a hopeless loss like last year

Ah sorry mate. Don't mean to be so bitter, just hate that this coach has ruined hockey for me. I haven't seen a single minute of Pens hockey yet in the regular season outside of the 40mins of the Hawks hilarity.

I would guess the Blues win that one.

The Pens with a 2 day layoff with a coach that is clueless af for actually fixing anything, yeah I feel like we'll see them shooting out the gate and fizzle hard by the second period into the third period shenanigans of petty penalties. I'll maybe build the Rivendale lego set instead, feels more constructive and relaxing than this shit to be honest.
