GDT: Game 77: Red Wings at habs 7:00 pm et 4/8/25

I do this knowing you're just going to go into the weeds of how consensus of a pick it was but 2022 with Shane Wright. Slaf was seen as a bit of a surprise and then Wright slid two more spots to fourth.
Except he wasn’t even close to consensus. It’s not “the weeds”. There was never a doubt Laf wasn’t going first overall by literally every single reputable site/scout/GM on record

By the time of the draft, Wright wasn’t #1 on a ton of lists.

They had more points in 20-21 than 19-20, more points in 21-22 than 20-21, more points in 22-23 than 21-22, etc. If you were to put that on a graph, it would make an ascending straight line from left to right.

And I’m making that comparison to show even with CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER teams, there are still setbacks. Why wouldn’t there also be setbacks with a team that’s in the thick of a rebuild?

No, I couldn’t care less about Yzerman’s free agent signings at this stage. He has to ice a team, he needs to sometimes bring in players that aren’t just AHL level talent to do so. Compher, Copp, Tarasenko, Holl, Talbot, etc. will not be on this team when they have championship aspirations. Now, if in 4 years he’s signing bleh players, I’ll have an issue with it. This team doesn’t even have their goalie yet. Yzerman isn’t going to give a hoot about this team just making the playoffs before Cossa (I think Augustine will be the better goalie) is the full time starter in net.

I think this rebuild is on the timeline that it takes for drafted goalies to become NHL players. I actually think it’s really obvious. Unfortunately for the impatient, most goalies take a while to develop.
And if Cossa/Augustine aren’t good starters… then what?

You’re ready to give Yzerman TEN years of bad UFA signings before you judge? Jesus.

I think we need to be realistic. Ottawa, Montreal and Columbus are now ahead of us in the rebuild we started 6 years ago. You can debate the reasons, but the facts still remain.
I think it's a toss up between all 4 teams. I like how Detroit is positioned going forward.
1. Great with future cap
2. Best players locked up long term
3. Good young talent in pipeline.

It's time to go star hunting now. They have the core and plenty of young depth coming in. Adding top tier players will slot others down where they can be more effective.

Kane as a third linerr/PP specialist seems ideal especially with Kasper centering the line.

what a f***ing terrible feeling. That giveaway by Tarasenko on a game winning goal, delayed shot by Compher with net empty and the helmet thing by Johansson is exactly why we lost this game.

and next year when Kane leaves we are going to be even worse.

Once again, I don’t care about the free agents he is/has been signing TO THIS POINT. Tarasenko is gone next year, Gustafsson is gone too, Holl after this year, Copp and Compher have what, 2-3 years left? Doesn’t matter. This team won’t be playing any playoff games past the 2nd round with those players on the team. They’re placeholders. They are irrelevant because this team is not destined to make a deep playoff run anytime soon. There’s an odd infatuation with people who want to make the playoffs just for the sake of making the playoffs, despite the fact that this team would get destroyed in a best of 7.

What if they don’t work out? What if any prospect doesn’t work out (most don’t, by the way)? What if any acquisition doesn’t work out? Then you move on from said player and try someone else. Not every rebuild results in a Stanley Cup.

There’s a possibility neither Cossa or Augustine become anything, ASP sucks in the NHL, Danielson is a 3rd line C, Edvinsson never progresses, Buchelnikov stays in Russia. But you have to build through the draft like Yzerman is doing and you need players to out produce their contracts. You don’t have a choice. Relying on free agency to build a team isn’t happening.

Think the guys played really really well, until the first Justin Holl moment, who lost his man Caufield in front of the the net to tie it 1-1.

That Albert Johansson situation was just unbelieveable bad luck.

Should have scored more goals on early game, for 3-0, to handle these bad bounces against. You have it 3-0, then going 3-2 doesn't help the Canadiens and it's Red Wings who'll score couple of empty-netters.

Still, they played very well. Can't blaim the effort.

Can't believe Montreal is going to the playoffs. What a piss-poor team.

I wonder if they have collected their points from other teams "planned" off-nights, because that team was supposed to be the weakeast at East, and when it was decently good (still think a lot worse than McLellan Red Wings), it surprised many contenders.

You need both UFA signings and trades, not just drafts. Two things Yzerman has either refused to do or done very poorly.

Where would Florida be without Forsling, Bobrovsky, Tkachuck and Bennett?

Tampa without Mcdonagh, Coleman, Sergachev?

Vegas without the countless moves they made?

Colorado without Toews, Nikushkin, Lehtonen?

We haven’t been bad enough or lucky enough to draft a true game breaker, and none of our current prospects are likely to reach that level.

Where else is he going to get actual quality secondary scoring/quality top pair or even middle pair D? Its very unlikely to come from these 15th overall picks.

Jesus Christ. Please tell me that you're not okay with that if that's what his plan is.

It is not a coincidence that these two were on the ice on the goals... However, YOU HAVE TO F'IN SCORE TO WIN GAMES. The Compher miss, the Raymond breakaway all the countless chances... I told my wife in the first period "They're playing great and dominating the game, but it worries me that they don't have a bigger lead. If you dominate play and don't score then you usually get one in the back of your net". And this is exactly what happened. Was Montembeault good? Yes, but isn't it weird that all goalies play out of their minds against us? Perhaps it is not a coincidence?

Except you typically get your stars via draft most of the time to build around.

I think he'll be back for one more year to be honest. He likes it in Detroit and he wants to continue to get more points.

Holl is signed for yet another year so what exactly makes you think he’s gone? This team won’t be playing any playoff games if yzerman keeps being an absolute disaster with FA.

It’s not an odd infatuation, people want playoffs so our young guys get some experience so when we are a contender they are ready to roll. Also it helps to not have a losing culture because let’s face it that’s exactly what this team has. It’s not a coincidence that they have completely imploded in March 3 years in a row.

Nobody is saying not to build through the draft, clearly that’s what he is doing, but to think you can just use that and that alone is insane. I have 0 faith that yzerman can make good decisions in FA because it has been a complete train wreck so far, if he can’t be good at that, and is unwilling to relinquish any picks/prospects in trades, this team will go nowhere

And he won’t even let Cossa be the backup next year which I think he 100% should be. ASP will be in GR guaranteed, even though there are no reasons he shouldn’t be in Detroit. Look at Hudson he played 0 AHL games and has lit it up and helped Montreal get to the playoffs. I get there is a fine line, but a guy like ASP has nothing more to prove at any level other than the NHL, he’s played enough pro hockey to be ready to go. If the plan isn’t for him to be in the show next year then wtf are we even doing here.

It's not just about the players...it's leadership and buy in from the ENTIRE team...a team that now has players who should be ready for golf season, going through the wall.

Suzuki went to Highes and Hughes agreed not to trade ANYONE if the team went for broke. Check how many points Suzuki has after the break and how much the entire team has bought into making the playoffs. Players like Armia and Dvorak who use to mail it in are now playing for their lives.

So it's not Yzerman, who is a damn good GM, one of the best, nor the individual players. Syder, Raymond and Larkin are exceptional.

It's leadership and team ready to go through a wall. Period.

Lastly...it was a lopsided game for you guys BUT when teams believe in themselves, they never give up. They will find a way to win.

Your team along with us will dominate in two years....mark my words...

Yzerman is good in the draft he’s not a good GM. I don’t see us being dominant at any point in near future because we don’t have an elite talent, and we won’t be picking high enough to get one and the GM refuses to use picks and prospects to acquire one

He should basically be all in on Marner. I’d honestly make him the highest paid player in hockey if that’s what it took. Ya it’s an overpay but cap is skyrocketing and they have great deals for Larkin, Raymond, seider.

I’d also have my first round pick this year firmly on the table for a high end F or legit top 2-3 D. They have enough middle of the lineup prospects they have their depth covered easily, but they don’t have the elite piece or 2 needed.

We get it, you hate Larkin. You have anything else to say here? 90% of your comments are slightly reworded versions of this
It’s also not like his GM has done him any favours. Have we ever had a C even close to his level? Has this team ever had an average D-core since he’s been here? Maybe it should be directed at the guy running the ship

Especially if doesn't reach 500 goals this season...he is close enough to want to come back. He seemed to speak highly of Nate last camp...so, he might entertain it just to play with a few of the new yutes.

I hope he’s back, say what you want but he’s been playing very well. Actually skating much much better than last year.

It is time to shut down Larkin for the year and get Danielson some experience. He has clearly been fighting some lower-body injury since the 4 Nations and it is time to stop fighting it and get better.
