Are there any competent media folks out there?
There are. It’s just easier to call out the annoying types or those with behaviours that seem incompatible with TV.

I think Anthony Marcotte and Anthony Martineau are smart, hard working talents that know how to garner an audience and hold attention. Max Van Houtte on BPM has the gift of gab and is witty and quick. Bruno Gervais is very observant and works in both languages (RDS and on 690).

I don’t like a lot of the staffers on English radio but enjoy the thought provoking content of their guests like Stephen Brunt who is worldly and can competently engage on virtually any subject with a spin or angle you may not have heard before. Gord Miller is well traveled and can be insightful.

I used to love the authoritative delivery and charisma of Dan Robertson. John Lu was honest and vulnerable and made himself so relatable. Sadly, we lost both to the Peg market.

Amanda Stein while with 690 was professional and a refreshing voice but has since moved to NJ and does a good job covering the Devils.

Even though some of his antics were overplayed, Gabe Morency rattled a few cages with his Sports Rage show on 690. Would have liked to see what he could have done with a longer term show on conventional radio.

While not as extreme as Morency, Adam Ward is wild and can go off the deep end in a matter of seconds and you can’t help but stick around as you just don’t know what he’s going to say next. He is fun to listen to and offers a change of pace from some of the more serious pundits.

I’ll sometimes watch Michael Felger out of Boston and he can get downright nasty when any of Boston’s pro teams fail to deliver. I like how several Boston pundits are fearless and will call out anyone in a raw, compelling style.

I’m sure you have your favorites out of Texas. Montreal is not a thriving media market on the Anglo side. Most of what’s happening on 690 is horrendous. However, you can always find a few bright spots if language is not a barrier and if one is not afraid to explore talents in other markets.

You know how some media people have a “radio voice”? Dan Robertson has that gift. He’s so friendly and humble, which makes him instantly relatable. Man does he ever love his donairs, lol. He used to laud the ones from NS, said they were the best.

I never even knew donairs were a thing — it’s all about lobsters for me and trying to find out where @sheed36 has them stashed. :sarcasm:

No one cares
@Runner77 Lobster season is a few weeks away but the prices this season might make it less of an option for me, last season they were at 9-10 bucks a pound and the rumors are saying much higher prices this season. I miss the days when my buddy delivered large buckets of lobster to me for free. He sold his license because of health issues and now I have to buy them lol.

I believe @sheed36 has several buckets’ worth in his massive freezer. I suspect he hid them right behind bags of squid, shrimp and cod cheeks.

Sorry to hear lobsters are getting expensive. That only means prices in Montreal will be that much worse.

Hoping for a nice old fashioned regulation loss, coupled with a big game from the first line.

Tough schedule this upcoming week, too. The tank is looking good!

Habs on a 4 game losing skid, playing their 4th game on this West Coast swing, facing the Kraken Sunday night.

It wasn't pretty against the Nucks on Thursday, as they dominated several facets of the game in a 4-1 drubbing of the Habs.

Thankfully, there was some good news in the interim -- the long awaited debut of David Reinbacher on Friday. He didn't disappoint, showing a lot of poise, smarts, positioning and smooth skating and scoring the tying goal that brought the Rocket back into a game where they had been trailing for the most part -- and which they won in OT.

We need to get good news where we can find it, so here's to you David Reinbacher.

Perhaps this custom practice jersey was an indication. :sarcasm:

Back to the Habs, there is really no world where one can find a positive about Josh Anderson. His TOI has been declining since January on account of his inability to produce anything -- against the Nucks, he didn't even manage to record a shot on goal.

Time to sollicit the advice of a big gun. What would Kevin O'Leary do?

He'd take the idea of rostering the Donkey and would shoot it behind the barn. Only the idea of him, not him -- hey, it's a family forum and we do not approve of gratuitous violence. :sarcasm:

Any hope for even a small improvement, Donkey? We'll take anything.

No worries, you have a spotlight on you, Donkey -- we'll be on you like parasitic ticks residing in your hind legs.

Which brings us to another unresolved and unresolvable irritant -- these media types who are hellbent on shoving their repulsive faces into our TV monitors and more often than not, are completely unbearable.

There is the guy with the raspy voice on RDS and his robotic salutation, "Bon match!"

uYQkmik.gif

Or this language mangler who conducts ice level exchanges with out of breath players on their pre-game warm ups. "How did you felt?"

vAjWIzK.jpeg

This other guy, who like François Gagnon, hails from the print media but somehow thinks he has a face and disposition for television. I dunno, he generates a Cringe Factor 9 vibe every time he's on camera, it's like he's trying to smile but doesn't really and has this weird stare. I think he belongs in the Louvre.

OK, Pierre LeBrun -- what were you thinking, sporting that mustache and haircut (hidden here, but you get the idea)? Did you join an historical re-enactment society?

vYMi33Y.png

All of which makes us appreciate the glory days of hockey media.

Where have you gone, Dick Irvin?
Our fan base turns its lonely eyes to you
Woo, woo, woo ...

And, since we can't possibly end this segment on a negative note, there is always room for Slaf, who potted a goal against the Nucks, his 38th point of the season, extending his consecutive points streak to 6 games. Nicely done, Chadkovsky.

No CBC/Sportsnet broadcast of game? Kind of sucks. You mean I have to watch Leafs?

The fish stock in the freezer is getting quite low here now after the long winter. Pretty much only a bit of cod and scallops left right now. Waiting until May until lobster re-opens here but like OC said the prices seem like they're gonna be quite high this year so we'll see.

We've been lucky the past few lobster seasons here and we could buy them locally for about $5-$6 per pound so we'll see how this year goes.

Since it's Saturday, which is fish day for me, I did have pan fired cod and scallops wrapped in bacon today though. :)

We're grasping at hope... there's so little of that from the Habs games. Only so much the driftwood can be watched before it gets depressing. At least Laval offers us a taste of what could be!

Rebuilds are rough!
You are so right...rebuilds are tough. Now that we see how bare the NHL cupboards are at forward it becomes even tougher to stomach. Maybe Newhook, Dach and Roy can develop into good players.

Dach and Roy for me. Don’t see a high ceiling for Newhook, maybe top 9 winger. I hope he proves me wrong.

Laval likely will not make the playoffs. Or barely will. hope this isn’t the taste of what could be.

glad RHP is playing with Newhook and Armia, though I'm still not sure why he's not with Anderson...
