Crazy to think Skinner scored 30 goals as an 18 year old and is now struggling to play on a scoring line.

Not as crazy as it would appear. Of his 5 years in the NHL, he's had 3 concussions, his sophomore year 2011, Feb 2013 and OCt 2014. The other 2 years he hit 30 or more goals. It's a shame that at 23 , he's already had 3 concussions and 2 were fairly serious. It takes a toll. IMO, he needs a fresh start on another team, I think mentally it would make a difference. He's got a world of talent but that concussion history makes him a high risk to any potential trade partners, and his name has been in trade rumors before this year.

I've been watching a few Canes games and teams they won (Detroit, Colorado) clearly underestimated them.

Carolina plays a pretty good defensive game and can keep the play outside, which can result into a very frustrating game for the opponent if they dont take them seriously..

I hope the losing streak is still in the back of Kings players heads.. Or else this could be a stinker.

Aren't the Canes one of the top possession teams so far into the season? Might be tough to play in a back to back situation. Still optimistic about our chances, Carter line is on fire.

for some reason i've watched 4 canes games this year (including both detroit games) and yes they've been pretty dominant at times

and Hanifin is amazing !

Not to argue, but I don't see how a change of scenery would be helpful, if someone is suffering from concussion? Having said that, I wouldn't mind taking a shot at Skinner, if he's available.

It's funny how some people have come to believe that faceoffs are one of the most important skill set for a center. Didn't they show a stat in last night's game where Columbus was leading the entire NHL in faceoffs? That should tell you all you need to know about faceoffs, and how important they are.

http://faceoffs.net/stats/team-faceoffs

I suggest you go there and read that the blue jackets are 20th in faceoffs :D so yeah keep beating that drum that there not

I'm not positive but i think you saw the pp stat

Faceoffs are incredibly important. If you don't know that, you don't know the game of hockey. Anyone can pull a anomaly stat out of their ass and try to tie a relationship to make their point. GTFO of here with that nonsense.

Calm down Ronald.

Are faceoffs more important than playmaking skills? Passing? Forechecking? Skating?

It's because there are stats available for FOs, whereas there are no stats for the 4 skillsets I've listed above.

It looks like they are starting to get more a custom to the speed necessary to play during the regular season. The preseason was so short that many teams just haven't got into their game intensity. I am worried about the first line as they are not getting many chances. Kopitar needs to use his size and get by that first defender, have Brown go to the net, Gaborik to come toward the circles, then start the play. Gaborik is streaking so if we can get him going Kopi's game will pick up.

Not really. Only one was serious in terms of time out:

Concussion #1 - Concussed on 12/7/11 (@ EDM). Returned on 1/15/12. Out 16 games/37 days.

Concussion #2 - Concussed on 2/14/13 (vs TOR). Returned on 2/28/13. Out 5 games/12 days.

Concussion #3 - Concussed on 10/5/14 (@ WSH). Returned on 10/21/14. Out 4 games/15 days.

Another factor is that he's on his third head coach in 5 years, all of whom have had different systems and different expectations for his role in those systems. By Skinner's own admission, he didn't adapt to Peters' system as easily at first. He's also never really struck gold in terms of line chemistry after the Skins and Finns line that he had rookie season success with (playing alongside Jussi Jokinen and Tuomo Ruutu) was dissolved.

I dont think so at all. you win faceoffs, you get possession, and possession is paramount

So, if you're in a market for a 1C, are you looking at his faceoff stats as number 1 priority?

Like I said, there are other skillsets that are more important when shopping for a center, but because you can actually keep stats for FOs, more and more people seem to overemphasize it.

there have been studies to show that face-off wins do not directly correlate with possession. but in some cases - special teams, 3-on-3, etc - face-offs become more important imo.

Indeed, Peters blenders up the lines between games. The main reason Skinner's on the 3rd line is that he works there - he hasn't shown much/any chemistry with either Staal, so that precludes his use on either of the top 2 lines. For comparisons sake our forward lines the other night in Colorado were

McGinn - E. Staal - Versteeg
Gerbe - J. Staal - Nestrasil
Skinner - Rask - Lindholm
Malone - McClement - Terry

Really the only lines that doesn't see much movement is the 4th line and the defensive pairings. E. Staal's started 3 games at LW (including tonight) and 4 games at C. Each of the games he's started on the wing, Rask has centered the top line.

Thanks for the insight, I look forward to seeing what Rask is all about. Must be nice to pick a kid in the 2nd round that can line up at 1c.

I didnt say that at all, not sure how you drew that conclusion from what I said. its not THE most important stat, but it is important, especially when those faceoffs are in your own zone. theres a lot of negative talk about centers that lack prowess in the faceoff circle. a prime example is Kadri

C'mon Kings, let's keep it rolling. I'm skipping tonight's game as I'll be at the Reign game instead. Excited to see the young guys for the first time in person.

I'm fine and calm.

But you still need to GTFO. :)
