OZ starts Percentages (Even Strength)
Courtesy of hockey reference.

  • Line 1
    • Henrique: 63.6%
    • Zegras: 65.9%
    • Carlsson: 66.7%
    • Terry: 61.9%

  • Line 2
    • Vatrano: 37.8%
    • McTavish: 45.5%
    • Strome: 44.4%

I gotta say that Line 2 is doing the dirty work and all three players lead the team in scoring: Vatrano 5 pts, Mac 4 pts, and Strome 4 pts.

  • D-men OZ starts Percentages (ES)
    • Mintyukov: 55.3%
    • Lyubushkin: 50.0%
    • Vaaks: 50.0%
    • Drysdale: 47.8%
    • Fowler: 47.2%
    • Gudas: 46.2%
    • LaCombe: 45.9%
    • Luneau: 42.1%

Luneau playing on the top pairing with Fowler was probably too much for the Luneau. LaCombe looks to be the relied upon in the D-zone. Minchy's offensive mind is being place in a position to succeed.

I have to assume the injury is still nagging at least somewhat, because otherwise this is kind of insane.

It's not an injury though. This is Verbeek's plan. If I were to guess, he gets about 2 games a week, for the first half of the season then he plays the rest as planned.

Verbeek leading the charge in showing GM’s how to keep a prospect in the NHL all season without burning a year of the elc

So it sounds like Leo will be playing in 42 of the 82 games this season.

John

I think it will be 60 something games. Remember he is going from a SHL season to a NHL season. So I expect a number between a full SHL season and a full NHL season.

Yeah, I have a much harder time defending this unless there's something else we don't know. The team is trying to win a Cup in the near-ish future. Leo Carlsson is instrumental to that goal. So keeping him healthy, building his strength, and managing his development are all key components to setting up Carlsson to succeed. I understand all of that and I'm good with it.

At some point, though, this is an entertainment business. Ducks fans have been wandering in the desert for five years. Leo Carlsson is that sweet drink of water we've been waiting for. And watching Carlsson play against Fantilli is even more tantalizing. If the Ducks are going to deny their fans that joy, they need to come out and give us some additional detail behind the plan. Otherwise, we're just chumps getting the rug pulled out from under us every game day.

That's not a great way to treat a fanbase that is finally trying to return to being excited about its team.

If that's Verbeek's meal ticket plan, then maybe he should have put Carlsson in the AHL because their schedule is lighter to start the season. Although, the amenities are better in the NHL, which includes travel. Maybe this was the compromise to not sending him back to the SHL?

I think Verbeek was intent on jumpstarting the rebuild faster by pushing up more rookies this year and abandon his original philosophy of preferring "overripen" prospects. He doesn't want a repeat of last year with a terrible roster. The rookies have more talent, but there will be growing pains and we notice the positive results on the ice compared to last year. It does suck for Cronin to be rotating who the 1C is for this season.

On a tangent, we might be doing the same thing with Luneau instead of sending him back to juniors.

Hard to understand for me but I gotta believe our management has thought it through a lot. As far as I can read from the situation, Leo is training strength and endurance now a lot

This is where sports is going. Pitchers are on pitch counts, NBA guys play fewer minutes and sit out games, running backs get less carries. I had hoped it wouldn’t creep into hockey, but it is. Analytic thinking.

Maybe we will be surprised when our Gm trades for another bonfied top 6 winger, and declares that zegras going all out to become a 2 way player, means we put Z Perma at center again. PLAN being now to have our big 3 down the middle. And said winger + killorn being added, plus more strength and conditioning for Leo means he expects us to make a push later in the season for the playoffs

I’m sure they planned this out entirely, like they may even have circled games on the calendar that he’ll play/not play.
This is probably true, and I'm fine with it. But again, I think communication with fans is key. I don't expect them to give us exact dates when he sits, but at least some understanding of the plan itself and how they got to it. Otherwise we get a lot of angry fans on game day who might not watch out of bitterness.

Bit random, but whatever happened to that random Blue Jackets fan who said they were switching allegiances and was on the board for like two days and then we never saw them again?

This may have been the other option.
Let him go to Sweden, play first line mins for a team that's hungry to win and then in December go play for Sweden to play for his country in a tournament that Sweden is hosting.

This is a shitty NHL experience for a 2nd overall pick and a waste of an elc year if he plays 9 games

It's possible that Carlsson's pre-season injury is connected to being overworked as an 18-year old. Remember how Cronin would do full AM practice and then play them in the game in the PM on the same day? That physical fatigue caught up and might have caused Carlsson to lose an edge that he normally doesn't.

In body building, rest is an equal factor in the equation. NCAA prospects usually play only two games a week. The players and teams can appropriately schedule workout times and rest times. This is why the NCAA prospects can usually handle the transition from college to the NHL better from a physical standpoint.

The most games LaCombe has played in the NCAA was 37 games. The most regular season games Carlsson has played in the SHL was 44 games, the max regular season games played in the SHL was 52 games last year. (Source) The NHL plays an 82-game schedule, which is nearly double what Carlsson had played in the SHL last year.

I suppose Verbeek wants to mimic the SHL schedule + 10%. If we reframe it in that lens, then it makes sense.

The reason behind this is jumpstarting or moving the rebuild ahead a year or half a year, but it isn't just Carlsson. We are still carrying three rookie d-men and a young Drysdale.
