Those were probably poor choices of words, I admit.
It's strange for me to be so down on this team. I think it's the inconsistent effort. I look at a team like the 2007-08 squad, they weren't the most talented bunch but they came to play the vast majority of the games. I loved that version of the Bruins, maybe because it felt like they were building towards something.
Last night I fell asleep for half the game. Two weeks ago I went to bed before the 3rd period of a tied game vs. Detroit, partially because I felt like they were already done. That's a rarity for me, especially since I could watch both on the TV and not the laptop PC.
Maybe it's this management team creating apathy for me as a fan. I watch Sweeney and Co. unable to fix even the back-up goaltending situation. I don't expect some massive team-saving deal, but he can't even seem to pull of a "your problem for my problem' type of deal to see if a change of scenary can change a players fortune's coming to Boston.
Some of these guys are trying hard, most nights. Even Saint Patrice has his nights when the effort isn't quite what we are used to. I don't know if they are mentally fragile, or they simply can't lock down opponents the way they used to. Is that Bruin problem, or is it a league-wide thing, with the speed of the game the way it now is. I don't know.
The backup goaltending point is a huge problem and the inability to find a fix could very well be what causes the team to miss the playoffs. No team leans harder on their starting goaltender to perform for them then the Bruins do Rask. Whether it's because all eyes are looking at the expansion draft or because nobody is willing to part with a quality netminder at this stage of the season, we're stuck with what we have: a goaltender with a promising prospect career who's shown he has ability but ultimately isn't ready ( McIntire ) or the guy who should be a quality backup but for whatever reason, does not have his **** together this year ( Doby ). 1 win out of 11 starts from our backups is horrendous. Even if they had been just poor/average and had managed to stumble around to get 4 wins out of 11 starts, that's still 6 points in the standings. That pushes us to 64 points, and in reach of 1st behind Montreal.
Just imagine where this team would be if our players that have sucked the most this year performed up to their past capabilities ( Hayes, Beleskey, Doby ).
Beleskey: he goes from .19 GPG and .46 PPG last year to .07 and .24 this year.
Hayes: he goes from .17 GPG and .39 PPG last year to .05 and .08 this year.
Doby: Never had a season under .9 SP and over 3 GAA until this year, he's under 9 and over 3.
These were role players but still roles that were vital to the success of the team. Two guys who we should have been able to count on for 30 goals combined now most likely won't get 10 total. A guy that we should have counted on to get 8 wins has just 1 with 30 games to go.
I still think they can make the playoffs but I look at this season as a process or a step in the right direction. I like where we are now as an organization then I did a year ago. Pasta is evolving into an elite player, Marchand has continued his accession into a whole new career arc that sees him among the very best in the game, Carlo looks like he can forge a solid career as a very good top 4, we have a legit top pairing prospect dman in McAvoy and Bergeron/Backes clones in JFK and Frederic performing well. The expansion draft plus our prospects pushing hard on the door gives the team a built in reason to get rid of some of the dead weight on the team.
