It’s always been a friends hiring friends network. Sometimes those hired friends happen to be competent and sometimes they’re not.

Some can even get fastracked from being a pee wee coach straight to the NHL and others have to toil their way up the rungs in the minors.

Did he slip through the cracks?

He it as an NHL assistant coach a few years back. Colorado for 2 years and then a year in Ottawa (where all the coaches were fired after the team underperformed badly) in 2016. He apparently refused a few NHL assistant coach jobs until Arizona gave him an HC job.
