What a terrible team.

Our "first line" couldn't even hang with Washington's second line of Johasson, Wilson and Chimera. The first line of the Great 8, Backstrom and Oshie held on to the puck for what seemed like eternities most of the game in the CBJ zone. Atkinson, Jenner and Dubinsky were so outclassed it wasn't funny.

Other than the first 10 minutes when Washington was asleep, it wasn't a game. This team's long term contracted forwards can't hang with the big dogs. Not even close. Dubinsky will get completely exposed as the #2C that he is against the teams in the upper third of the league. Just as he was tonight. Pretty comical when he barked at Ovechkin after #8 checked him pretty hard. Tough guy Dubi wanted no part of him. But his bark was fierce and highly competitive no doubt.

Can't blame Bob on goals 1,2 or 4. Great shots on the first two and the 4th was a door step tip in courtesy of the greatest defensive pairing that will ever be, #3 and #27. I can only imagine how things will be when the Wonderful Werenski wields his wand with the dynamic duo. Nothing short of dynastic, I'm sure.

I'm glad Torts and his 3rd grade classroom approach to coaching cost the CBJ the services of its leading scorer last night. Scotty had to say "I'm sorry" to all his classmates and then had to sit in the corner with his funny hat on while everyone else played. 17-23 under the washed up one. Great hire, Jarm baby!

Maybe a half full building. Maybe. Had the energy level of a library with candy dishes full of free high powered sedatives.

Believe it or not, I had a good time. Hockey's a great sport and the competition tonight made it all the worthwhile to have gone. Can't wait to see Montreal and the Jackets play next Monday. Somebody's got to win that one. I think.

I'm not sure what game you watched. Jenner, Atkinson, and Duby absolutely dominated while on the ice.

Jenner - 77.27% Corsi (Corsi For 34/Corsi Against 10)
Dubinsky - 73.81% Corsi (Corsi for 31./Corsi Against 11)
Atkinson- 70.83% Corsi (Corsi for 34/ Corsi Against 14)

Compare that to

Wilson - 43.33% Corsi (Corsi For 13/ Corsi Against 17)
Johansson - 41.38% Corsi (Corsi For 12/ Corsi Against 17)
Chimera - 40% Corsi (Corsi For 12/Corsi Against 18)

The Chimera goal was scored against the fourth line courtsey of Falk's gift. Johannson scored an Empty Net goal.

In fact, the Duby/Jenner/Atkinson line was out there mostly against Ovechkin's line. Their -1 is from the first goal where Prout made the terrible pinch at the offensive blue line creating the 3 on 2.

Based on the possession numbers and the scoring chances CBJ was the better team. Caps are very good at finishing their chances and if you take penalties, you're pretty much asking for it.

CR, please stop with the grousing. Please ..... Ok, you are still bitter about the Joey trade. Ok, I understand. But please stop inflicting it upon the rest of us. This is a simple, but genuine request. Please stop it.

For me watching Murray and Jones play together is now worth the price of admission. They are like a ballet together. The way they fed off each other, after only 5 games, is amazing. Jones is so smooooooth. And tonite he showed his physical side too. Murray seems to trust Jones and is now on the way to becoming what we thought he would be when we made him the second pick. Between the two of them, it is worth being at the game.

How are we railing on Saad ? Yes he's hit a lull with 2 points in past 7 games . Yet he still has 16 goals and 15 assists, for 31 points in 46 games. Plus he's 23, playing on a new team that's struggled mightily.

I'm not throwing him under the bus, but I'd like to hold him to a higher standard than Falk and Prout. Most of the season he's been great, but I really haven't noticed him the past several games.

I reject this premise. 15-1-1 was an aberration because the games no longer mattered. Our playoff hopes were dead and buried. 0-8 at the start of the season MATTERED. They're not equivalent just because they're games.

They are equivalent because they both represent a small sample size.

If we were going to make assumptions, no one would have assumed we'd start 0-8. There are lots of other stats I could pull out to show we're a better team despite Jarmo's piss poor roster management, but I only care about wins and losses.

Again, small sample size. The stats you're saying show improvement show improvement only over stats accrued over a short period of time. Kind of like when baseball people joke that so-and-so is on pace for 300 home runs.

However, we can conclude the coach wasn't the problem.

I have already done this.

CBJ threatening to finish worse than 2011-2012 team. 38 points in 47 games. Woof.

12-20-3? Matches those 65 points.

This is true, but having a pretty good year overall.

Spot on. Also I cannot help but be amused that people who were giving Joey an out because he's only 23 never apply the same lens for him (Saad) being 23. Granted they are the same chronilogocal age, but certainly not the same age maturity level..... I love Saad's game. He knows how to find the puck and is clearly is clearly someone who can put the puck in the net using skill....Much needed with so many grinder scorers on the team. His slump will not be a prolonged one.

True, but the games mattered very much to the teams they played, most were fighting for playoffs or positioning.

Use the bloody ignore feature. Click my name, hit the "ignore" feature and be done with me. Adios. I don't care much for most of your postings.

But, I'll agree with your assessment that Murray is a ballerina.

The shots were front-ended in the first 10 minutes, hence the Corsis. The time that the Capitals spent in the zone cycling and passing against #17,#13 and #38 would be an interesting stat to have. It was substantial.

If you feel that the "first line" was "dominant" in any sense beyond the Corsi, I'd have to ask you the same question you posed me.

Those 3 lead all players for both teams in possession and Columbus was consistent in shots all game going 12/11/12 by period. If anything, Columbus' possession got stronger as the game went along.

Biggest difference in the game was they capitalized on mistakes. But from a pure "who controlled the game and created more chances" perspective...Columbus did. They also made more mistakes and got burned. But to say that the line got outplayed is just not true and there is zero stats to support it.

Case for why a myopic Corsi assessment of a game has very little worth. "Possession" based on one metric in one game is often misleading. And last night it was.

Look for our "top line" to struggle mightily against good teams for the rest of this season.

You're clearly moving the goalposts. Look at what you wrote in your previous messages. The "frontloaded" shots just aren't there.

Not a great game from the Jackets, I'll admit. But they still carried much of the play against the #1 team.

And you seem to remember Johansen as a stellar all around player. He's done nothing but get eaten up defensively the last two years. His patented controller-disconnect on defense would not have helped against the #1 team in the league.

Did you really think that the Dubinsky line "carried the play" vs. the #1 Capitals line? Oh well.

I didn't mention anything about Johansen, did I? But, the way Johansen has played for Nashville would have helped against the league's #1 team. Yes it would have.

.

I think it shows when the pressure is on, this team has cracked. When there's no pressure, or no expectation, they have generally played decently.

This team was bad before Torts and they're only mediocre now with Torts size 12 up their rear ends. We're not the only team to get throttled lately by Washington. We're only one of the few teams to beat them - with our #3 and #4 goaltenders no less.

Speaking to the general population now, and not DSL specifically, it's not Todd Richards fault. It's not John Tortorella's fault and I'm sick of hearing who he's ruining the team. All of this is Jarmo's handiwork. So it's also the fault of the guy who continues to employ him - and the guy who continues to employ that guy.

Except if you have Johansen up top, you don't have Jones in back. By the way, Nashville is 1-4-1 since acquiring Johansen.

It has plenty of worth when it is meant to address a specific statement about that specific game.

I addressed that statement about how our first line played in that game with empirical evidence showing that was simply not true. Possession statistic showing how dominant they were in that area isn't what I would call myopic. You claimed the line of Ovie, Backstrom and Oshie dominated possession, but the statistic used to measure possession as best as possible doesn't back that statement up. You also said our top guys couldn't hang with the Caps' 3rd line. Something that again the stats don't show.

You have a perception of what was happening based on your own preconceptions and when the stats don't support your claims you say they are short-sighted. :handclap:

The Corsi/Fenwick model is the first attempt to measure puck possession. It's an ok starting point. But, it doesn't measure cycling time and actual possession time. It's an implied measure of possession. A shot followed by 2 rebounds which takes 3 seconds to occur registers 3 times more"possession than 30 seconds of passing and cycling which results in one shot. And that was going on last night most of the time with our "first line" on the ice after the first 10 minutes of the Capitals sleep walking.

My eyes were what shaped my perceptions last night. Enjoy pumping the tires of our "first line" with Corsis and other esoteric stats. Because it's gonna be awfully tough to make a case with wins and goals for vs. goals against for the rest of this season, next year and probably the year after that.

Preds are 1-4-1 with Johansen. That is a very interesting stat.
