I thought Pinto played a really good game for the U.S, reminiscent of Tomas Holmstrom with how well he plays around the net.

I’d love to play for a O6 franchise who’s been the most successful team for the last 30 years.

Red Wings will be relevant again very soon.
Very true... I'm not worried about the Wing's at all... really good base. Veleno, Zadina, Hronek... I'm not familiar enough with the program but I feel they need a goalie. In either case... they'll be good soon.

Just throwing this out there but maybe , those best players don't know how to defend and they would get eaten up... You can say they'd have the puck and dominate but .. probably not from where I sit anyway. I think there is a reason we are seeing the lines the way they are. Do those guys Zegras, Turcotte, Caufield, Kaliyev have offensive talent no question. Maybe there has been some evaluation by those responsible for putting together a lineup on their play outside the offensive zone. ..

Turcotte is known for playing a 200-foot game, though.

Veleno and Lafreniere are already busy building the chemistry that will carry the Wings to their next dynasty :naughty:

I always cheered against the Wings, but at the same time, I miss those teams. Always played hockey the way it is supposed to be played - equal parts of skill, heart, and grit.

Veleno was a draft steal.
His name was probably mentioned no more than half a dozen times in this GDT but he played great today. Super smart and played off Laf excellently, and flashed his skill and skating a bunch. The play where he took it on his backhand in the middle of five Americans and instead of blindly shovelling it at the net, made two evasive moves and put himself in a position to make a good feed to an open defenceman really stuck out to me. Also seemed to be commanding the faceoff circle and making good things happen in his own end.

He was a beast in the face off circle. Him and Laf have some real chemistry.

I guess someone doesn't know what they are talking about.

With Canada leading the United States by a goal late in their World Juniors opener, the puck went flying over the glass in an errant play by Ty Dellandrea. It was nearly a penalty against Canada, and it would’ve been a potentially pivotal one at that.
But assistant coach André Tourigny caught the puck as it was flying over the glass, which, according to the letter of the law, means Canada avoided going on the PK. They went on to win 6-4 minutes later.
That article means Zerooooooooooo.

Our coach has no idea what he's doing sorry. All he knows is how to coach grind it out hockey.

Exactly. People say he has great tools, but I don't even see tools. Being big, hitting hard, being a great skater and having a good wrist shot from the back-end is not all the tools. He doesn't defend well, his puck skills are average, as is his puck-moving. He has a low hockey IQ, as well.

I say that as a fan of the team that drafted him. I've seen him play plenty before we drafted him and after we drafted him. Never rated his game. I hope he comes good for us and I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

Something you can take positively from this is that sometimes those other skills aren’t the hardest thing in the world to develop. Pierre Engvall here in Toronto was a 7th rounder that was just kinda fast and tall. Couple seasons in the AHL and he can shoot and pass pretty well. Point being with some solid development and help from the Rangers I think his tools are good enough to be a 4/5 at worst.

Best Canadian team in years.

Minus early in the first, Canada was the bigger, better, more dangerous team - especially 5 on 5.

The 2019 draft is the best Canadian draft in a long while. After all the wonderful players we cranked out from 2005 to 2013 (we squeezed out a generation (or 2) of amazing players in a short period of time), we were due for a lull. God knows, we got a lull and it's lasted a LONG time. Hopefully, we will see an uptick in the years to come and we can start replacing the last Golden Generation.

I wouldn't discount that the best American players were marginalized by their coach. Lafreniere is the best Canadian player, but if our top players were allowed to be our top players, I don't think Lafreniere would be clearly the best player out there AINEC.

There’s no one on the American team on Lafreniere’s level.

Some very talented players but when you combine Laf’s skill, physical game, and hockey sense he’s unmatched by any of the Yanks.

He’s not just the best Canadian player, he’s the best player on any team at this tournament.

Because he's not a grinder. Grinders play big minutes, skill players play low minutes.

Thats how this coach thinks we'll win games.
This is so silly. Who on the US is a grinder? The players with high minutes after Drury were Wahlstrom, Robertson, and Caufield. Oh what grinders. Next was Shane Pinto, the BP. If you want to say "Turcotte instead of Drury" or something, ok, that makes sense. But to say the coach is playing grinders. Who? Who on this team is even a grinder? This team is built of skill players.

Lafreniere is also a draft-eligible player that just turned 18. There are some players in this tournament that are near 20 years old. I wouldn't even be sure Lafreniere is the best player on his own team, although he played the best today. Smith and Hayton are nearly 20 years old, and probably should be playing regular roles in the NHL this season. Look how Hughes and Kakko are struggling in the NHL this season. Not everyone comes into the NHL immediately and is as good as McDavid.

You mentioned Drury already. Ford played more than Turcotte, Zegras, Kaliyev and Brink. Stastney played a regular shift, York didn't even hit 3 minutes. Even Beecher and Pinto are way more grinders than any of the four I mentioned above. They should not be playing in the top six over those players.

Well, Lafreniere is also better than Kakko and Hughes so...

Laf is to my eyes the best forward prospect since McDavid. His complete game at this age is as NHL ready as you can get, he’s also got a mean streak to him that I absolutely love, he’s a physical tank who can create havoc on the forecheck.
