I'm a little younger but this is so true. When I was 6 (1984) we moved from Winnipeg to the east coast and I'd wake up every morning to check the sports page to see how the Jets did, while also reading every box score of every game. We'd maybe get a Jets Game once a year on HNIC if they were playing the Leafs (or we'd have to watch on the French channel when they played the Habs).

Back then I knew every player on all 21 teams (lol) through collecting hockey cards, hockey stickers, you name it.

When I wasn't playing hockey, my friends and I were playing street hockey. When we weren't doing that, I was in my unfinished basement taking shots

Its crazy to think how a sport has woven its way into the fabric of so many of our lives. When I met my wife, she'd never heard of Winnipeg or watched a hockey game. Through being with me and watching all three of our kids play, it's now a part if her life too

I remember a while back @Jet made a post about his experience with the game. It would be kinda cool to have a thread where we could share our backgrounds and experiences with hockey
Played many, many hours of street hockey......

What a delightful surprise. I logged on to the GDT expecting the usual grumpy enthusiasm and discovered a group of old guys who finally learned how to share experiences. And such heartwarming details! I think your mothers would all be very proud of you.

I wonder how many girls have been proposed to by a boy wearing a jockstrap?

I'm still lounging in bed with my laptop, recreating my student mornings, except for the rain which has been falling for the past 36 hours. And is forecast to pour down for the next week at least. Still it's nice to stretch and unwind, which is a redundant phrase.

I've claimed the upstairs TV for this afternoon and intend to watch the game. Well, most of it. We have an Uber booked for 7 so I'll probably be doing the dress wiggle in the second intermission. The Wild lost last night but had a short flight and no time zone switch so we might not get the full B2B advantage. Still I'll keep my fingers crossed (which makes applying mascara difficult) and hope we make a fast start and play a full sixty minutes.

Go Jets!

I’m not sure what this game will really show us as fans about where the team stands. I could easily see us losing decisively, and, honestly, Minnesota’s a good team—so maybe that’s not the end of the world. I’m not ready to write off the team if they lose tonight. I just want to see how they play. If they put in a hard effort, get a decent number of shots on net, hustle, and lose because Minnesota’s just better, fine—those things happen. But if they get absolutely blown out again? Yeah, people will have every right to get angrier with each loss. And should.

That said what would be more Winnipeg then losing to a garbage hockey team and then coming home and beating a great hockey team

It's Saturday. It's Hockey Night in Canada. It's their last dance of the 2024/25 regular season. It's a marquee match up between your Central Division & NHL leading, Winnnipeg Jets, against our hated rivals south of the border and closest competitor for the Central Division crown, the Minnesota Wild.

The Jets return home off a lackluster loss in Selanne Land. Getting gut punched by The Ducks in front of their mother's, as the final few minutes of the 3rd period wound down. The Wild come skidding into the 204 on a three game losing streak. Taking L's from The Golden Knights (f***ers), Panthers and _____s.

It's too early to gauge where each club will finish in the standings. This game won't solidify a position on the divisional table. Notwithstanding, one has a golden opportunity to widen the gap, the other a chance to close it. Both should be salivating to get back to winning ways.

Can Winnipeg sweep Minnesota in the season series? Tune in tonight to find out!

------------------------

Examining the course of my life, hockey has always been there. My earliest childhood memories of listening to Jets games on the radio with my Dad. Going to the Winnipeg Arena with him. Skating my youth away at the community club outside my house.

The first time I got drunk was at those rinks. It was a muggy summer night and my friends and I used a couple tipped over nets as makeshift sofas. Later, I projectile vomited on the hood of a car in the lot of a dealership on Portage Avenue. We were stumbling to Robin's Donuts to get 1 dollar bags of day old's (if you know, you know). When we got there, I puked again.

The first time I kissed a girl, was outside a hockey rink. No, it wasn't that same night.

I moved away. Hockey followed.

When I proposed to my wife, I had come home from a game of road hockey. I was so excited that I didn't bother to change first. When I got down on one knee, I was still wearing my jockstrap (there were gym shorts overtop, sicko's).

At our wedding, I set up Stiga table hockey for guests to partake in. Mostly because my uncle would be there. I hadn't seen him in years and I wanted to beat that bastard after a childhood of torment. He was still too good...

The last photo taken of my brother before he died, he was wearing a Jets jersey. He had just bought it. The Blue Heritage Classic. #55.

Last year, while I was watching The Jets play Tampa Bay, my wife handed me an envelope. Inside was a card, telling me I was going to become a father.

I don't consider the Jets to be a possession of True North. I view the Winnipeg Jets, the city of Winnipeg and the people who live there, as symbiotic entities. Inseparable. Our personal love affairs with hockey and the city, is what brought back the Jets to life. It's what keeps them alive. It's what unifies us. In my opinion, there isn't a pro team and city out there, that are as dependent on one another.

Maybe that's why I feel disdain towards players who look down on Winnipeg. Winnipegers who adorn themselves in the colour's and crest of another team, from some other place. An owner who doesn't truly understand the people that make NHL hockey in Winnipeg possible. I suppose these are rants best left for another day.

Maybe this is all sentimental bs encouraged by one too many Guinness. You be the judge...

They call Minnesota The State of Hockey.

In Winnipeg, it's life in a state of hockey.

Fixed it for you

Lost to Chicago 3-2 on the second night of a back to back on the road on Tuesday then came back and beat Carolina 3-1 after two days rest at home on Friday

You make it sound like the Jets are the only team at the top of the standings that loses to bad teams

That last sentence would apply to every team in the league.

Also my opinion but people who get angry at their team losing, especially when they aren't in attendance for that game, should probably de-prioritize professional sports.

That's a good point. If you dropped $400 and the team mails it in, you have a right to be pissed

Just like when I went to the GnR concert in 1993 and Axel Rose showed up late and gave an ass performance

Sounds like the holiday family trip isn't as grim as you were expecting.

According to the Freep, Minny starts Jesper Wallstedt in net. Never heard of this clown before.

Is the Jester any good?

So now we all have something to occupy our minds after the second period.

I'd kindly settle for a tall glass of milk.

And the beauty of it, is that they're real. Though I can appreciate tall tales too.

Okay that one went over my head.

Oh right, you're not in on that private joke.

A few seasons ago, Chicago had to call up an emergency goalie due to injury and he played like a Vezina-candidate. His day job was that of an accountant.

The Blackhawks won that game and it left all of us emotionally scarred.

Minnesota has always been a rival of the Jets.

Man they played rough and dirty back then.

Yeah I remember that. Forgot it til now.

This new guy is a Swedish kid and not a lot of experfience. Maybe 4 games tops in the NHL over two years.

That's you. You sound ridiculous. Get off your high horse, you aren't a better fan because you watch the team implode and apparently don't care.
