They also made it a point to suck long enough to get a ton of assets, including a legit 1C and a legit high end 2C.

We were bad for like 2 minutes and decided we had enough.

We had four years of consecutive top-10 picks including 2nd and 1st overall. That should actually be enough for a solid rebuild. The problem is, that all but the 1st overall have been full busts for us and even Laf is a mediocre 1st overall at best.

As Machinehead keeps telling us, we have 1.5 nhl defencemen (Fox and Schneider) plus quick in net. 3 goals against sounds about right.
Our inability to look like scoring is annoying though, we're basically relying solely on Panarin for some individual brilliance at this point

Basically our team.

They didn’t wade into the deep end of the trade and FA market because they drafted Zacha and McLeod.

NYR got one top 5 pick and setup a press conference on the deck of an aircraft carrier under a MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner.

It might be under certain circumstances but for us it wasn't and it was obvious at the time it wasn't enough. We never even got a legit center.

Today's still a victory for the Brodzinski haters because he going to finish under 10 mins TOI probably

That'll show him that he doesn't belong here!

An embarassment of assets. They mostly didn't work out.

LA was bad for a long time, drafted like 38 centers and ALL of them didn't work out.

Hockey development is mostly random.
But they did bring us Bryan Boyle and an excellent podcast with Larry and Mollie

So, this will be unpopular but… it’s just my opinion and observation.

The locker room was always too chummy and comfy (country club if you will). If not over pampered, at least definitely a “boy’s club” atmosphere. Fox basically got inducted into that group immediately when he showed up and made such a huge impact and then won a Norris. That’s fine - being accepted and getting in close with the core guys who have been there and kind of “run things” isn’t the problem. Lafreniere never proved as much as Fox but he’s a total “bro” and so he also gradually/pretty quickly got “in” with the club.

The problem is that this particular club is basically Chris and Mika and it’s the most infectious, spineless, loser mentality in the league. Goodrow and Trouba being jettisoned offended Chris and Mika, but by extension, the little brats who got absorbed into the boys club also got butt hurt, because that whiny, entitled attitude is contagious. It essentially ruined them. We’ve seen that both of them CAN be great, but neither really is anymore. Because they’re in the club. And the club is now malcontents. The effort is never 100%, let alone 110. The attitude and body language is consistently poor on the ice. And yet it’s still all chummy smiles and jokes on the bench and in the room.

It won’t happen, and I don’t need anyone to agree with me, but my personal preference would be to purge them ALL. The only guys I am remotely content to keep around are the ones who haven’t been here long enough to have been indoctrinated into the NYR culture yet, like Cuylle, Berard, Edstrom. And I worry that Cuylle having a big year will lead to him becoming “one of the boys” followed by a miraculous dip in effort and compete level. The only exceptions are potentially guys like Panarin or Trochek who simply seem to have an innate motor that isn’t dictated by the crappy culture of their peers. But I would absolutely purge every INKLING of the team’s previous identity and culture this summer. That’s just me. Will never happen, but that’s probably the only thing that would genuinely, fully rejuvenate my ability to care about this team.

Because we smartly acquired extra draft capital in the very short time we tore down.

Then we traded it all away, ran it off, or failed to develop it.

People can’t seriously argue that the NYR “rebuilt” when there was zero room for the first 1OA pick in franchise history to displace Ryan Strome from PP time. It’s a joke…1 Cup in 85 years (I’m calling it) isn’t an accident.

It is not. LA is in the same boat as us, they prioritized Veterans over kids and stunted their development
I find it completely ridiculous that someone could play hockey for 10+ years, get drafted high, get 4 minutes less per game than they're used to, and they're ruined and can't complete or make passes anymore.

I remember Manny Malhotra debates over the same thing, then he went elsewhere and it was like "oh yeah he just actually has no puck skills, that's why he got 4th line ice time".
