yeah, RJ won't be bought out...he may be traded with us keeping a portion of salary, but no way does he get bought out here...

Remember last year when was the "heart of the team" and "should get the C" ?

I suppose he may have handled the lockout poorly by not playing anywhere.
If still keep him and change his off season training to find his speed again.

Tough loss, although I missed the Calvert "kicking" motion it sounds as if it should have counted.. Giving up 5 goals in regulation does not seem to be Richards’s hockey but he's been lobbying for more scoring and got it... It's either defense or offense but not both it would appear...

Kudos to the Anisomov line, four goals is impressive... It looks like the playoffs are out of reach being under .500 with only 15 games left, it was a nice mid-season run though..

Sell.....

Oh dear. We sure are easy and loose with the owners money. I'll assume by this post, you also expect them to use the cap space after they buy out?

Since cap space isn't an issue, since we aren't a cap team, that really isn't a great reason for a buy out.

I think less than 10% of anyone who mentions a buyout really understand what that means.

I didn't get to watch the game (yet) except for the last 10 minutes. Shame they lost it, but every once in awhile these games happen. I'm not going to get angsty about it.

I like Wiz, his game and what he brings to the game. Not sure I understand why he's the whipping boy lately. A small segment of vocal posters seem to have made up their minds that he's too expensive, too injured and too poor to keep around. I disagree, and don't really see the point in stating reasons why because it's pretty clear there is no convincing them. Wiz tends to try to do just a little too much sometimes, but when he's on his game, he puts a significant amount of pressure on the other team by driving the puck and not letting them get hemmed in on the opposing forecheck. He's good at running the PP, certainly better than anyone I can remember this team having save Spacek and has a cannon. When Erixon, Goloubef, Murray or Moore start turning into a better version of Wiz, I'll discuss moving him.

Regarding Richards, isn't it funny how a coach's mistakes seem to only mirror what doesn't work? Sounds obvious, but sometimes mistakes accidentally work, sometimes they don't, and sometimes they're not mistakes at all. Lots of experts here, I guess. Richards tries a lot of things and sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. There's always a reason you do something as a coach, and it's not always related to the situation and the result isn't always easy to predict.

I think he's doing a fine job mentoring these guys and I think he's done a fantastic job helping turn the culture around. Can he take them to a cup? Probably not, maybe, I don't know, but I do know he's getting quite a bit out of the hand he's been dealt and that's pretty much what I expect out of a coach. If a coach can get more out of players than most expect, I think it means he's doing his job, and doing it well at that.

Good post but I'm going to pull this out as particularly relevant.

Maybe, despite the season's ups (playoff chase?) and downs (at least we're getting a top pick), the season has always been about trying stuff and laying a foundation. Teaching the players "how" to play the way that's desired, and seeing what each can do within that structure in a variety of situations (presumably also not at the expense of "proper" development).

I was thinking this earlier when reading the "playoff chances down, back in chase of a top pick, sell sell sell" stuff in other threads. Perhaps the goal has never been to make the playoffs nor to secure a top 3 selection in the draft. Maybe what happens, happens, but the result is merely a byproduct of the process.

Of course, this could all be a bunch of hot air and our players are schizophrenic and the coaching staff is grasping at straws.

(Caveat: Yes, I, in this very thread, questioned the logic of dressing seven defensemen and suggested splitting up one of the pairs mid-game.)

It was a great game to watch, and at the same time horrible, because I think this is the beginning of the end for the season.

13-42-11

Played the best game I've ever seen from a CBJ line.

Glad to hear you are happy with what Wiz has brought to the team as the 9th highest paid d-man in the league this year at $7M (more then what is paid to Chara, Karlsson, etc). Forgive us if others may expect more at that price-tag and think the money could have been better spent elsewhere.

And next year that drops to 12th, behind Jason Garrison and Niklas Kronwall. The year after, he's 15th, behind Matt Carle. Then he's 21st, then 24th. In that last year, there's only 27 total defensemen around the league who are actually signed to a contract right now, so he may well end up down in the 50-100 range.

Karlsson was an RFA when his contract was signed. Gotta compare apples to apples.

RFA or not...the Wiz contract is a bad one and everyone outside of fans of the CBJ's seem to agree since his name consistently comes up on lists of potential buy-outs.

Well, there are also an amazing number of idiots in the world.

If Wisniewski is healthy and playing at his normal level, what's he worth? $2 mil? $3 mil? $4 mil? The general consensus has been somewhere in the $4.75 to $5 mil range, which means that he's about $500K to $750K over market value. Frankly, big ****ing deal.

It's five prime years of a very good offensive defenseman. Not a guy who's past his prime like Markov, Timonen, Gonchar, Visnovsky, Boyle; ALL of them are making more than Wisniewski, and all of them are either worse right now or will be worse next year and until the end of time. Not a guy who's not there yet and whose play has mysteriously plummeted (Mike Green and Tyler Myers).

Good thing his cap hit is 5.5 and that's what really counts. Having high salaries for one year is a good number for haters to cherry pick and point at as proof a player is paid too high when they are displeased with that players play.

Using Wiz's real salary number, the one that counts against the cap, he's the 18th highest paid D-man in the league. Not the 9th like you (stickguy) want to claim due to your anti Wiz agenda.

Wisniewski was signed to score points, be a threat on the PP, and add some grit to our quitter mentality team led by Mr. Quitter Rick Nash. So far, he's done everything that was asked of him when he was signed. His injuries have been a disappointment. His effort and contributions when healthy are not. Wiz was part of the Carter offseason. It was exciting when the CBJ added two big guns. If Carter tried and brought as much to the table as Wiz has, the CBJ would be in the playoffs right now.

Everyone outside of CBJ Fans was sure than Nash was overrated too, but he sure seems to be doing alright in New York...

As usual, great read on Puck Daddy on the no goal.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-p...goal-vs-oilers-042156567--nhl.html#more-54121

“Used his skate†would indicate intent, which frankly makes Calvert some kind of ninja to have the wherewithal to “kick†the puck while falling to the ice.

But the rule itself doesn’t mandate “intent†to have a goal overturned; just a “distinct kicking motionâ€, which is typically associated with a pendulum-like movement of the leg, which Calvert clearly did not have either.

If anything, his skate shoves the puck into the goal as he attempts to plant his skate and regain his balance; if you want to classify that as a “kickâ€, and the NHL seems to do that here, then what we have is a problem with the rule itself.

I would disagree with the percentage. The buyout under this CBA is fairly common knowledge among hockey fans and not all that difficult to understand. Capgeek even has a buyout calculator.

I see a guy that is past his prime, rapidly regressing, and not worth the roster space for what he is making.

These are the primary mistakes people keep making with regard to buyout talk:

1) A focus on capspace rather than salary. We're not a cap team, and likely won't be for some years.

2) Some forget that you still have to pay a player about 2/3 if you buy him out. So a player has to be much worse than just overpaid, he has to be worth less than 1/3 of his salary. Those are rare situations, a player has to be as bad as Gomez or Commodore to merit it.

Capgeek has a buyout calculator, so its not difficult to find out what he would be due. Its also not solely about capspace, its also about getting out from under a bad contract to free up a roster space.

And yes, I see Umbergers career trending towards Commodore bad in a season or two. Don't think the CBJ are all that impressed anymore either - he's went from potential captain to the token Buckeye on the roster.
