Greetings, could you guys explain the Walman + 2nd round for future considerations trade?
What am I not seeing here? He seems to be producing at a great rate at even strength, and even prior to the trade his numbers seem ok-ish…

Yzerman overpaid for a cap dump(something larger possibly planned that never panned out perhaps). He dropped a bit in value last year because of injury but I’m pretty sure most Red Wings fans were made about this one.

Only reason I can think of is that they wanted room for a deal they were trying to make elsewhere and this was their quickest out to accomplish that. They may not have succeeded with that subsequent deal but that's the only reason why a team wouldn't first waive a guy if they have the time to just dump their contract.

It's quite puzzling to be honest. The scuttle is that Walman was a locker room problem in Detroit and they wanted to clear big salary quickly and didn't bother shopping him around to more than Grier. Obviously nothing significant panned out with that cap space, but likely it was for Trouba who then nixed the deal.

Walman has nights where he looks like a legit #1 (like the Caps game), some where he merely looks like a solid #4. But yeah, insane to have been paid to take such a good defenseman who is only 28 and not overpaid or signed long-term. He's been great so far and he's clearly got a passion for the game that I think is a good influence on the kids.

If there are issues within Detroit's locker room with Walman, I would understand wanting to move on from him first given his production up to that point including an inability to stay in the lineup. His previous career high in assists was 9 and he broke that here against them two and a half weeks ago. This Walman didn't seem to ever show up in Detroit or in St. Louis. Something just clicked with him coming here and getting a lot more ice time.

I think for some guys getting the confidence booster of “you’re our guy now, show us what you got” goes a long way. He was essentially asked to be a #1 defenseman and, while maybe not exactly reaching that level, has shown he has way more to give than people thought.

Watching him though, the trade was just absolutely insane. I really like the guy and hope he’s part of the future team.

Folks seem to think it was for a cap dump deal that didn't pan out. Maybe he wanted Brady Skjei.

My ultra tin foil hat stretch theory is NYR couldn't give SJS assets for claiming the Goodrow contract and old boys club worked together.

Yeah, I think it's fair to say that Walman has wildly exceeded anything he's ever done before. If he played this well last year for Detroit, I don't think they would have traded him even if he were a minor personality issue.

Some guys just need a change of scenery to click. A hidden value in Walman is that he's making Ceci look better than he is, which will improve his value at the deadline.
