Some of you guys put waaaaay too much emphasis on goalie playing b2b games. It's one thing if JQ had played past 5 games or so, but that obviously isn't the case. He's well rested. If anything, DS may want to get JQ going by playing him b2b.

Sorry but you are wrong here. There's a reason why most teams never play the same goalie b2b, even in a non shortened season. Its no suprise both quick and bernier were both pulled in the 2nd game....

SHould be advantage kings here as we should get to see lolbarbera in one of them.

So, that means we shouldn't ever try it again?

And just how many games is that, 2 or 3 max???

We can try when we solidify our seed more safely. But for now no. When we or if we do separate by 3/4 points then it's okay to try. But with everyone on our ass in the standings then no. Try later.

I get that Quick is our guy, but in the short season I think you have to go with the hot hand.

Whether it's the short season or regular season is irrelevant. What would happen if JB kept winning? Does JQ continue to sit? Does he get traded? I'm looking at the bigger picture here and the macro outlook tells me, we need to get JQ going.

im just..

WOW...

When Darryl Sutter spoke to the media following this morning’s skate, he fielded a pair of questions pertaining to tonight’s game before offering a detailed account of what makes Anze Kopitar the type of player that he is. It was very interesting to hear Sutter dissect Kopitar’s on-and-off-ice qualities and provide an example of when plus-minus is at its most accurate as a statistic.

On reasons behind the statistics that indicate L.A. improves as the game progresses:
“I think first, we need four lines, especially in the schedule the way it is. If you don’t have four lines that can give you eight minutes of even strength, you’re going to have trouble. I think that’s the most important part.”

On what Phoenix possesses that presents a challenge to any team:
“Veteran mobile defense. Other than the kid – who’s a star – their veteran mobile defense.”

On Anze Kopitar:
“He’s the best all-around centerman that I’ve coached, period. Period. Faceoffs, last minute, first minute, penalty killer. Plays against everybody’s top player, whether it’s a defenseman, a center, a checking role or an offensive role. He plays 20-plus minutes. Doesn’t take penalties. It’s the whole deal. He can play it whatever way we want. Do you want to come and get me? Come and get me…He can play it any way we want. And you know what? The best thing about Kopitar is he’s getting better. And when they do the comparisons with guys that are like that, there’s only a handful of them.”

On Kopitar “playing the body:
“Big guy. The biggest adjustment that he’s made since I’ve been here…is playing that way all the time, and I think the playoffs last year, that stimulated him into seeing the ability to stay with it instead of getting frustrated with anything that’s got to do with numbers. Just to stay with it. He’s a special player.”

On Kopitar “initiating contact”:
“It’s not so much anything to do with initiating. It’s just that when there’s loose pucks, it used to be where he would see what was going to happen out of it. Now he goes and gets it, and then he protects it, which is the biggest part of it. It’s possession…because he wants to play a possession game. But he’s a hard guy to take the puck away from, because he’s so skilled, and he has good size, and then he sees it. He’s got the vision in traffic. We call it ‘expect numbers’, meaning he expects numbers – he expects two or three guys all the time. He’s very gifted at it. If you look, even at the start of the year, hey, he missed two weeks. Say what you want about it, but he missed two weeks. He got to play one game in Colorado, and then it took him like four or five games, and you could just see it, just see where his game was going, right? The other thing about it is he’s a high-plus guy. That one ain’t going to lie when you play as much as [him]. He’s a high-plus player, and…everybody says, ‘well, that stat may or may not be important’. For guys like that that play a lot and play against everybody’s best player, whether they’re high-offense or…checkers, that is a stat that tells you what’s going on. You even look at our center ice position, and guys that are really on and guys that aren’t…we can use our centermen effectively against other teams’ centers just because Kopitar, Richards-slash-Carter, Stoli and then Fras – they fit the role of where they should be. But he still gets most of it when you look at it. Nine times out of 10 he’s your best faceoff guy. He’s the guy you want taking a big faceoff, and that’s the other best part about Kopitar too. The communication during the game and before the game in terms of who, what why, all those things? Spot on. He’s not afraid to turn and tell you, ‘Jeez, do this. You should try this. Do this.’ Or, ‘I can’t get anywhere.’ And you know what? That means they’re special guys. Not every team has guys like that.”

On Kopitar being a “low maintenance” player:
“No, he’s not a high maintenance guy. But the difference – that’s one of the things when I came here, I had get these guys to practice at a level. They were a paced team because of the style they played, and he was the guy that had to make the biggest adjustment, quite honest. So it kind of pulls everybody with him.”

Sad to see the Kings retiring the nicest jersey they have ever had.

I have worn that jersey all over the country and around the world and have always gotten compliments on it.

The new one, not so much.

And you can't start a goaltending controversy, Quick has not been good this year, but he has equity built up, they aren't going to move him to backup after what he did last spring.

I agree with you with the the jersy that they are way better than the new set. Sad to see them completely go.
I do not thiink anyone was saying move Quick to a fulltime backup role. If this team is goign to win it all he will be the one to take them there. I was just saying in the shortened season where every game means so much I believe it is better to go with the hot hand.

Wow I feel that Kopitar is jesus after I read Sutters comments.

Lets not getting our ass's handed to us by the yotes' again...that is all.

Great comments from Sutter, especially the part about Kopitar getting better. Kopitar's not only the best all-around centerman Sutter's ever coached, he's also the best all-around centerman the Kings have ever drafted. And IMO, that's not an "IMO". So many players to like on this team, but Kopitar's got to be my favorite.

The guy has been a pleasure to watch ever since he turned Pronger inside-out to score that goal in his very first NHL game. I can't believe he's been here 500+ games now. His skill at protecting the puck while it's in his possession is incredible.

Back to the CDT....just WIN tonight.....and if they don't do that...at least get a loser point!

Imagine the hype Koitar would get if he played in the East!!.

I hope we smash out 4 points by wednesday.

Let's just be happy that Kopitar is playing in LA. Who really cares about the East? He can be a much more complete player with Sutter as his coach and playing in the West.

Nolan out again? Ugh. Is Penner really a better option.

I like Nolan and wish he was playing, probably for different reasons than you do. But it's pretty obvious DS doesn't value toughness very much at all.

I miss Nolan's energy more than his toughness, he'll get another chance soon.

:shakehead Sutter is all abotu toughness and grit.

Penner should be playing over Nolan. I would like to see nolan before king though.

He was the first player evwer from Slovenia.

Also, this was the first draft where the rules on the rights of Euro drafted players changed. Before 05, teams had their rights until the players was 31.

Anze was the first Euro taken in that draft at 11

# Player Nationality NHL team College/junior/club team
1 Sidney Crosby (Centre) Canada Pittsburgh Penguins
2 Bobby Ryan (Right Wing) United States Mighty Ducks of Anaheim
3 Jack Johnson (Defence) United States Carolina Hurricanes
4 Benoit Pouliot (Left Wing) Canada Minnesota Wild
5 Carey Price (Goaltender) Canada Montreal Canadiens
6 Gilbert Brule (Centre) Canada Columbus Blue Jackets
7 Jack Skille (Right Wing) United States Chicago Blackhawks
8 Devin Setoguchi (Right Wing) Canada San Jose Sharks
9 Brian Lee (Defence) United States Ottawa Senators
10 Luc Bourdon (Defence) Canada Vancouver Canucks
11 Anze Kopitar (Centre) Slovenia Los Angeles Kings

I hate seeing Clifford have to do all the heavy lifting with Nolan sitting. Coyotes are going to dress Bissonette and Torres. You don't trade Westgarth and sit Nolan and let a young kid like Clifford, who has already been knocked silly a few times have to handle all the lifting, he is proving that he too valuable a commodity. Dwight King is not DJ King either.

Kopitar fell because he was Slovenian, there is no other explanation.

The Kin gs had no business getting Kopi where they did in that draft, I think it's fair to say it's possibly the most fortunate event to ever happen to this franchise.

There were some great players in that draft (Bobby Ryan, Jonathan Quick, James Neal, Carey Price, Jack Johnson, Keith Yandle, James Neal) but only Crosby should have gone before Kopitar.

Gilbert Brule, Brian Lee, Luc Bourdon (rip), Devin Setoguchi, Jack Skille and Benoit Pouliot, just some bad bad picks.

Scary to think if Kopi had gone to SJ or Chicago (could you imagine!?), happy it worked out for us.

Johnny,

Sutter doesn't care what waste of a roster spot Phoenix is going to throw on their 4th line. The Kings are not going to play that type of game again under DS. Clifford is going to be playing the very limited tough guy role on the Kings. Westgarth was traded because they did him a favor and put him on a team that would play him in the NHL, if he stayed here he would be in Manchester or claimed off waivers.

It's not the 70's, 80's or 90's anymore. DS isn't wasting roster spots for the very overrated toughness, if he feels like Toffoli is a better hockey player, he is going to play him. If Phoenix or anyone else wants to dress a goon squad go right ahead, this team hasn't been intimidated by anyone, and will take advantage by rolling four capable lines.

The change in the Euro drating rules hurt too. Hanzal and Rask should have gone higher too

European Players - Prior to 2005, NHL teams retained the rights to a European player until that player turned 31. Drafted Europeans must now be signed within two years, the same as North Americans, or the team loses the rights to the player.
