Also, if you wanted to go on this direction, let's say we cleared out the entire aging core.

A group of Laf, Chytil, Kakko, Berard, Cuylle, Trocheck (who I'm not really counting among the usual suspects at this point), Fox, Jones, etc., plus a few signings, could at least be a competitive roster.

I don't think moving a new direction is always as black and white as being as horrible as possible.

The point is, the longer we wait to completely change course, the more time we waste. It's over.

Some of the longest, most agonizing rebuilds (San Jose, Chicago) were caused by "kicks at the can" and not tearing it up immediately.

True, they don’t have to tear it all the way down, but it’s time to start moving out the old guard. Get ahead of things now and restock the cupboard of picks of prospects, create salary cap room.

The issues appears to (still) be, how do we get that true #1 center that you seem to need in order to truly be competitive?
We've tried to buy one for years and it hasn't worked.
They tend to go at the top of the draft (unless we win the lottery...) which usually means you do have to bottom out, but as you point out we likely have enough skill on the roster to avoid that.
So you're left in no-man's land waiting some insane draft luck at around pick #15

I understand playing those odds, but we won two lotteries and neither of those picks was ever going to be a center. Like I said, it's not that black and white.

We would we well-served to not buy and maybe, just maybe, actually draft centers, which is a choice, and not something left up to draft circumstance.

I'm not against a more violent rebuild, but you wouldn't trade Fox or anyone younger than him, and I legit think the team improves if those guys are playing instead of Trouba and Zibanejad.

If we did anything beyond that, it would be going out of our way to try and be horrible, which I never liked as a tone to set at the start of your rebuild.

Trying to figure out how this happened. Troch,Laf,Fox are not players who mail it in. It has to be Mika and his very poor disinterested play. Its like ground hog day with Mika and the players expect change and it doesn't happen so they take the foot off the gas. Lavy is in a tough spot...he starts going crazy it will slide further. Drury needs to tell Lavy to sit Mika tomorrow. What else can you do in the short term?

Even if he did, he'll go back to it the first time somebody farts.

NHL coaches just aren't willing to upset what "worked" for a team previously. They don't want to go back into the market after being fired having done anything the last guy didn't do, because then that's on them.

A big part of deleting this vet core, for me, is getting those combinations completely off the menu.

100% in agreement, although I am worried about how 'passive' Laf and KK seem to be when there are opportunities for them to step up in role.
My other concern is that we have 0 draft capital at the moment, and the problem children won't return anything of value (Smith and Vesey should bring back middle round picks), so you are really dependent on the returns for CK, Panarin and Shesty to revamp things, unless you start looking at adding a guy like Miller or KK to the outgoing list, which then leaves you with more roster holes...

No one is expecting anything special from a Lindgren and Trouba trade. Seems like as @Machinehead said a misreading of the board. We were thrilled when we got a 3rd for Georgiev and were thrilled when we traded Staal. I think we had to trade a pick just to get rid of Staal. No one here is hoping for a 3rd. This is an argument against no one.

The lack of guys ready to be in a huge role is why I'd hang onto Panarin, but that's just me, and I wouldn't stage a protest if we didn't.

It seems like he's saying that he feels he's (and the team) are working hard, even if it doesn't look it effort wise, but it's not going right. And it's not that he (and they) don't care, the internal pressure ecause they do 'want it' makes things worse.

There's no blame in that statement. It's a just the words of a guy who doesn't know what's gone wrong and really doesn't know how to try and articulate it (which is one of the many reasons why post match interviews are usually worthless).
