Your two goals down against the best goalie in the world. You pull the goalie because it is very hard in 4-6 to just take pot shots at the empty goal, you have to get the puck first. Kings did nothing on that pp, absolutely nothing. Get it yet?

Totally agree. Doughty sucked everytime he touched it, and as you pointed out , down by 2 with the pp why not pull him? He pulls him seconds AFTER it's over and the Habs score.

I can't imagine Sutter likes Purcell, so if Mersch can't even beat him out...

Purcell and King are playing for contracts. Mersch has how many ES strength goals in the AHL? One. A couple PP goals though. So do Hensick, Auger, and Bjorkstrand. Why not call for them? Bjorkstrand has 2 goals in 3 games.

Because Mersch has scored consistently in the AHL, had good preseason showings in the NHL and as you alluded to, makes his living on the PP. Nic Dowd is 26 years old and right now looks like one of our best players night in and night out. His offensive output in the AHL is strikingly similar to Mersch. How did he get a call up and then make the team? Was it a supernatural force that made him a good NHL player suddenly? No, he got an opportunity. If he never got called up and was in the minors his entire career, would we ever have known that he can be an effective NHL player? If Mersch comes up and can't cut it in the NHL, send him back. It's not complicated. This entire conversation started because Mersch has been knocked for his skating and what I'm seeing now are players who are average skaters getting opportunities over him.

Especially when you consider how bad the pp really is. Even a good one only has about a 1 in 5 chance, you have to do everything possible to get the first one. Sometimes you just have to roll the dice when your odds are bad.

How do you not show up prepared ? They sure looked like they had jetlag from Toronto.

Clearly didn't come to play tonight. Montreal gives up 30 shots a game. Kings average the most in the NHL. And the Kings had 8 halfway through the game.

Price was in their heads before they even showed up to the rink. Evens was spot on, the Kings lost the game in the first.

Cant wait for the sens games, there's nothing like being forcefed Karlsson hero worship to cap off the day.

I dare, double dare, physical challenge one of you enthusiastic posters to start a "Doughty for back to back norris trophies" thread and keep rebutting all the Karlsson fanboys!

Too easy and the mods would grow wise to the ruse pretty fast.

Was only able to watch the 1st period tonight, but it sounds like a good thing that I missed the rest of the game. Not going to be playing teams like Calgary or the Leafs all the time.

The Troll is strong with this one. #NeverKarlsson....

Good game. They battled back. Kopi had some good looks. Toffoli with the sweet goal. They got 1 so I have no complaints. Love Toffoli's body position so if the puck bounces out to the side he's close enough to the other players to use his body to shield the puck so he can get a clean shot off.

Growing pains for Forbort & Gravel tonight. Gravel struggled on the boards and Forbort was having issues getting the puck out of the D-zone tonight. They're hanging in there....

Mersch is on the Dowd plan. Maybe in a couple of years. I really think it's his skating through center ice holding him back at this point. Would love to add another 230 pounder.

No Shutout = Win!

I'm not anti-calling Mersch up. I'm just asking why are we focused on the King's and Purcell's of the team. Dowd is doing a really good job for the team this year, often being more consistently visible than Kopitar and Carter, and the Kings are still struggling, because the main guys are up and down every game.

I think most King fans agree that the Kings would be better off moving on from the vets with heavy, slow feet in favor of youth. I've advocated a 50/50 lineup of young players and vets or somewhere close to that. The Kings have been notorious for holding onto players for too long and once they leave LA barely last in the NHL. Players like Frolov, Richards, Stoll-these guys were logging star minutes in LA, Sutter was forcing Stoll and Richards onto the PP and once they were cut loose barely held on before they were forced out of the NHL for lack of talent. We will see the same scenario play out when King, Purcell and Nolan are finally cut loose. Marginal NHL talent merely occupying minutes that will be taken by somebody in Ontario. Dwight King looks like his skates have lead plates in them.

The big problem on the Kings PP is the lack of a succession of one touch passes that expose the box. Each guy gets it, dribbles it back and forth two or three times all the while taking their own peek about whether to shoot or not before sliding it over to next guy on the perimeter. There's no deception at all.

I thought it was a very, very good game. It was extraordinarily even. When the score was 0-3, it could easily have been 2-2. They got a couple of lucky breaks, while we got a couple of unlucky breaks.

Evans was saying the game was lost in the 1st period. Not true! After period #2, the game could have been tied.

I wasn't surprised to see the final shot attempts being dead even @ 48 a piece. These two teams would be an amazing Stanley Cup Final series.....

Going through the threads on the main boards; the hate for the Kings and their style of play is very high. Even when it's not a thread about them, they get bought up and trashed on.

Which "main boards" are we talking about here? Link?

Thanks!!!

Yup... lots of room for improvement. If you combine a good PP with a great defense & goalie, it would add a lot of wins.

Check out the GDT of the Leafs from the day of the Leafs/Kings game. Some posters were cautious, but some were convinced that the Leafs were going to stomp the Kings due to Quick being out. They quickly blamed the Kings defensive style for the outcome.

i'm convinced we weren't watching the same game

I think we didn't find our legs in the first and got out-Kingsed at Kings hockey. Losing faceoffs, board battles, physical battles was just embarassing and the game was over at the end of the first.

We looked better the rest of the way, but still sloppy. Though I'll agree we didn't get the breaks (goaltending on either side) that could have impacted the game and helped us steal a win, we got the outcome we deserved imo.
