It will be interesting to see how this team responds tomorrow to Simmonds being out. I know the Leafs are still trying to shake their "soft" reputation and Simmonds is clearly the best among the boys at providing truculence and providing that physical presence, but the Leafs aren't marshmallows as the Habs board is acting like in their pre-game thread ahead of Wednesday's matchup. Muzzin, Holl, and Bogosian provide the physical presence on the back-end. Up front there's a dearth of intimidation factor but Hyman is a dog on the puck and Matthews doesn't take much guff either. Also,

Wish Thornton was healthy. He's not an intimidator like Simmonds but he's big and isn't afraid to mix it up on the ice when needed.

You got it exaclty rigth sire. Big Joey is that fantastic and BIG for sure. I
've followed his career from the start. Especially the years in san jose, very closely. He'll drop em allright, if necessary sire.

Does y'all think spezza will get even more game time now? I think a bit more of that 5 0on 5 ice time baby. Yeah, like 52 seconds more.

I would try Vesey back with JT and Nylander, and reunite the Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikheyev 3rd line which was very effective last season.

Gotta win this for Wayne.
Don't hate that idea. Other than Vesey doesn't really deserve the promotion, but what do ya do, we're hurting

I know I'll likely get backlash, but I'm currently over the Barabonov situation. Much rather see a guy like Joey Anderson get in. We also have Engvall sitting there too. Luckily we have good depth.
Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Vesey-Tavares-Nylander
Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikheyev
Petan-Boyd-Spezza
*Or a Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Anderson 3rd*

Holl is rather timid for a big man.

Vancouver is soft, so no issue there, but Montreal, Ottawa coming up are more physical teams where Simmonds will be missed.
Simmonds was -3 with no points, 5 hits and 15 PIM's in over 27 minutes of ice time against Ottawa and Montreal so far this year.

I'll miss Simmonds being in the lineup but we'll be fine.

He was also playing minor minutes, way down the lineup at that point. Looked like a completely different player (shades of vintage Wayne) playing with Tavares, Nylander and fulfilling his role on the powerplay. I can't blame him, he's played with talented players for years. He's not JUST a grinder.

I have a weird feeling that Toronto drops a frustrating one tomorrow night. I hope I'm wrong of course, but I think the Canucks are due to catch some breaks and win a 4-3 type of game.

I'm fully expecting the Canucks to come out with their hair on fire after being humiliated twice. I think you may be right.

The first few games were pretty much exhibition or tune up games. I'd rather judge players on the last 9-10 games rather than on the first 2 or 3. How does Marner look based on the same games and and how has he looked since ?

Simmonds is fine but let's not overrate him. He isn't a good 5v5 player no matter who he plays with. He's looked fine (or better than I expected for Simmonds) but we have the depth to replace him for the time being.

If Hutch can't be trusted against this sad sack Canucks team, may as well start looking for somebody else. Good opportunity to rest Andy before the home and home vs Habs. Heck it might even inspire them to show up and give us a game.
Keep chewing up the points while you can I say. Fred had a day off and should be ready to go.

Simmonds is a lacklustre 5v5 player that can punch real gud and play a physical brand of hockey on a bit of a PP hotstreak. The benefits he provides make him a unique asset on the team and until we see better 5v5 players provide this pugnacity, he should continue playing controlled minutes for the team. This brand of player also seem to thrive in the playoffs, and being a hometown guy doesn't hurt either.

Sure he can play but it is a condensed schedule and they play in 3 time zones. Load management keeps him fresher for the playoffs but what do I know
Totally agree if Soup is back there, 110%. No time to tinker with Hutch at this point imho.

I've said the same thing in numerous threads. His value to the team isn't primarily his skill level. There are other guys that can fill the point production. The loss is in the character, intangibles, effort, toughness and willingness to do the small things that contribute to winning hockey... And above else, the accountability that he brings out of others when they see him paying the price in front of the net, fighting for his teammates, etc.

Toronto has a rather soft system of backups and the guys that do bring some of what Wayne does from an intangible perspective, have never shown any ability to score at the NHL level... I'm not pretending that we just lost Matthews for six weeks, but I think Toronto lost one of their best emotional leaders and a guy who instills confidence in everyone else.

Cantstatstackenoughs vs Canucks .
Might get 10 goals tomorrow. This season will be a highscoring one for the top teams.

The boys better be ready for a highly motivated Canucks team tonight. They've been embarrassed against us and the habs.
