The lines need some work. 5v5 was poor after a decent 1st period. The makeshift 4th was easily the best. 4-0 in shots, 96% xGF, 2-0 on the scoresheet. JdB-Coyle-Marchy were solid enough but didn't look very threatening tonight. Top line was bad and sloppy and got straight up outplayed. Zacha looked a bit lost and made some mistakes and Pasta didn't have much impact.
For the second game in a row, Geekie-Poitras-Frederic got hosed. 29% corsi, shots 2-6 against, high danger chances 0-4. Monty used them a lot in a defensive capacity, which I get is normal for a 3rd line and accounts for some of the negative numbers, but Geekie does not strike me as being particularly strong defensively and Poitras is very much still learning that aspect of his game, so I'm not sure about the wisdom of that. Something probably needs to change because those 1st and 3rd combos aren't really working.
Carlo was our best defender again. Played a big 25 mins and was a rock in the Bruins' end. He's really stepping up while McAvoy and co. are out. Lindholm continues to be a little flaky but he eats minutes and is putting the hard yards in, so can't fault him too much. Lohrei battled a bit but it's all learning for him and he was still better than Shattenkirk. I've been mostly a fan of Kevin since he arrived in Boston, but this was a bad game by him. Less than 11 mins TOI at 5v5 tells me that Monty thought so too. Actually thought Mitchell and Wotherspoon did ok.
The Bruins won because Swayman was outstanding, the 4th line was awesome and defensively led by Carlo they did just enough to scrap and fight and hold on. Good job in that sense, and always fun to see young'uns get their first goals, both with very nice shots. But there's plenty for the coaching staff to chew on as the team looks to continue to improve. Getting some guys back on D will certainly help, but there's more to it than that. Plenty of early points in the bank though, so for the most part we have reason to be happy.
