I'm more concerned with his offensive output than his ability to play defense. Remember Larkin played on Z's wing and I don't think he played the position before either. Not to mention Z himself spent quite a bit of time on Datsyuk's wing.

Agree on Tank though. He's playing like he's burnt out on the game.

Honestly, he might be early. I legitimately thought he might 'coast' on this roster till January/February. He was traded last year to a stanley cup champions, so he's been doing some 'moving around' lately while playing some extended hockey.

I'm almost sure he was basically living in a hotel or players house with the Panthers and might have just settled somewhere when he signed with the Red Wings.

It was reported that he missed one game for flu. Maybe he has not been at 100% condition yet, at any game.

And his dad died at last summer.

I would not make too early conclusions about his early-season effort.

No. 1 priority for me this season was improving in their own end. Don't care if the offense dries up a bit, chances will come if they clean up their d-zone play and can regularly exit with possession. Tonight for me was a great example of what I want to see. Natural Stat Trick has them giving up only five High Danger chances 5v5, none in the third period. Aside from about a five-minute stretch in the second, they gave Chicago very little. Bedard was erased. Better zone exits too, AlJo is particularly good at reverses which give him better lanes for passing and clearing zone and he's a good influence on Gus who had by far his best game. We saw Chiarot, AlJo, Gus and Edvinsson jump up into plays, Ed constantly hunting for chances back-door. That's where offense can come from with this current set-up of one skill line, three grinding lines. Tough for Raymond, but I'd like to see how this works for a while. There is a much clearer team identitiy with this configuration: "Larkin, score. All you other guys, don't give up anything." Won't work long-term, might get them a WC spot short-term.

.It would be a terrible idea to send Kasper down. He's fitting in really well defensively and has a responsible approach to what he needs to do. He is the glue for that line not giving up much while they try to develop some offensive chemistry. One sequence stands out: Back-checking hard, bodying a guy off the puck in the neutral zone, taking the puck away and immediately moving it to a teammate in stride moving up-ice. He's always coming all the way back, doesn't bobble the puck, makes safe plays that advance possession. Influential on the forecheck, hunting down loose pucks, putting his body in the right places. Stop looking at boxscores to determine if he belongs. He does.

Petry is done.

100% agree with this.

I thought the last maybe 30 mins of the game tarasenko started to show something. Had the puck a bit more, created a couple chances, hit the post. Hopefully translates to next game. Unsure why he is playing the strong side half wall on PP2, I’d like to see him and bergy switch, bergy was good in his strong side in GR last year

Nice game guys. Two game win streak. One of these days we will actually outshoot the other team. We will likely lose but that’s hockey.

I am not concerned about Kasper. He looks good out there, and he is creating chances for both himself and his linemates. The points will come.

Same can be said of Rasmussen. He looks prrtty good this season. His points will come too.

Agreed, he was very close to getting an assist on a nice 2-on-1 play to Larkin in this one.
It also can't be understated how good he is defensively already. Faceoffs at 48% is also quite good for a 20 year old.

If the wings don't win 8-1 I'm going to become a UHC fan.

Obviously 4-1 isn't 8-1.

But I was also a big fat liar.

Just trying to light a fire under newsey and the boys asses last night. It obviously worked. You're welcome everyone.

I basically won the game for us.

Onto Toronto. It's autumn, so let's watch the leafs fall.

I've been as big a Ras fan as anyone on this board, but the points need to come to justify his contract. Same with Veleno. And Berggren. I think they've all looked good this year, I think they're all working hard and do a lot of good things...but the ultimate results just aren't there yet.

Berggren will have more runway just because he's cheap, but as this team gets better we're not going to want to be spending $3m on a fourth line forward just as we're not going to want to be spending $3m on a 6/7 D.

Aside from the top pair the D still sucks.
If you want a laugh, during the pregame on the radio, Paul Woods said the defense looks better this year than last year. I think there are only two possible explanations:

1) He meant to say that the top pair looks better than last year.
2) Paul Woods needs a GoFundMe for his tragic loss of eyesight.

berg- be gone with you. adds nothing and does nothing
kasper- needs to find the offense. maybe put him with raymond and compher, drop copp to 3rd/4th line
tank- has he done anything???
ajo-he needs to play more. he is our #3 dman right now.
petry/char- wtf is this pairing

this team is not going anywhere with what they have right now. no offense after the top line(w/ray on there, not kane).
I love the idea of putting Raymond with Kasper.

Ya I agree Raymond with Kasper. How long is it going to take for lalonde to see: Kane played with compher and didn't look great. Raymond is not playing with compher and doesn't look as good. Compher should be on the 3rd line. Player Kasper with Raymond or Kane.

That's not a bad idea and I agree with the thinking behind it and what might be affecting Kasper, but I wouldn't go there yet. I wouldn't call Berggren defensively inept this season. He's not adept either, but his effort level has been quite good IMO and he's been a bit unlucky not to have more points from the chances that line has created. The guy not yet pulling his weight is Tarasenko. Main reason though for not wanting to do a Kasper-Copp switch is that I think their current positions are their better positions. Kasper's never played wing AFAIK and won't continue improving at C unless he plays there. The more Copp has the puck, the less effective he is and he doesn't have the same physical impact or dogged forechecking that Kasper already brings. But we'll see.

I think Kasper and Berggren as a line have been really good the last 3 games or so. I wouldnt be moving them right now at all. We're talking about a rookie and a sophomore player that are starting to develop some chemistry. They don't need to be shaken up after 4 games where their advanced stats and eye test have looked really solid.

I definitely wouldn't be moving Copp anywhere from what he's doing right now lol. I don't care if he's getting weird bounces, he's like halfway to his highest red wing goal total already

Completely agree with this. I think a lot of people want a high pick to step in and be a point per game player right away. But Kasper is playing really well, gets chances, and is awesome defensively. He also has the puck on his stick a lot out there. Its a good situation for him to develop, people just need to let him

I thought Kane looked best with Compher/Copp. They mucked it up and Kane was able to do his thing. We put Raymond with Kaspar, I'd move Tarasenko to that top line.

AlJo should play every game going forward. He's the best defender not named Seider or Edvinsson.

He played such a solid game last night. I posted in another thread but ill repeat it here. He was a real calming presence out there. Just making little plays to set his teammates up with time and space all over the ice.

Tank also missed some flu time, not making excuses for him, but I would like to see some time for Kasper, JB and Tank to see if there is a 2 kids and a billy-goat there or not, give them another 5-6 games to see.

Rather than move Kasper up to take Copp's spot (that could work too), but as a more radical thought, how about trying JB, Kasper and Raymond on a line once the wings get past the Ranger's game on Saturday? JB has shown chemistry in the past with Raymond (Team Sweden) and of course with Kasper last year in the AHL.

The real downside with this leaves a line of Copp, Compher and Tank...a scary thought
