I miss Roy, Hasek, Brodeur and Belfour.
Ehh, I mean there's some pretty elite talent these days in Vasi/Shesty/Sorokin... But you definitely don't need an elite goalie to be successful.

Goalie is such a flimsy position that it's not really something to evaluate a team's rebuild on. Realistically, there are 3-5 goalies that are consistently elite in the league. The likes of Quick/Bishop/Crawford/Binnington were once considered studs and look how quickly they fell off the face of the earth.

Nice if you've got one of the elite guys, yeah... But you probably don't.

After all, the list of goalies who have backstopped their teams to Cups in the last 10 years includes consistently elite talents such as:

Adin Hill
Darcy Kuemper
Jordan Binnington
Braden Holtby
Matt Murray (x2)

This makes me feel even better about the the Wing's chances this year.

I'd keep expectations low and be pleasantly surprised lol.

I think right now we're a mediocre roster that's incredibly well coached and has a top line firing on all cylinders. Injure Larkin/Seider/Debrincat? Screwed. Teams start throwing everything at that top line? Screwed. Top line goes on a cold streak? Screwed.

I think it's possible we make the playoffs, especially with the way Tampa's playing currently. But probably still likely we get edged out. Next year is where things really start to get interesting. We've already got some solid depth at forward, but Edvinsson and maybe Wallinder adding to the D group is huge. In Ed's case, that's actual talent, not just a guy who's playing well in a system that's working right now.

A realistic outlook for sure. But at least the roster is good enough to win when things are clicking.

Just for clarity which of the following teams drafted their current #1 goalie
Toronto
Ottawa
Buffalo
Carolina
NJ
Edmonton
Colorado
Minnesota
Vegas

Obviously the DRW are hoping Cossa pans out. I suspect every team hopes its draftees pan out..would be ridiculous otherwise.

If he dosent.. exactly the same as most of the top teams in the league, options exist...

Goaltending is like the majority of those teams biggest weakness to be fair

209 at the Van
Cossa with a 28 save 1-0 shutout win tonight.

Save percentage at .909 and GAA at 2.63 in 23 games (11-7-5 record).
They're finally getting him games so he can get into a rhythm. For the longest time they were giving the higher share of the starts to the vet Hutchinson which is a weird thing to do in a development league. That seemed to have turned after the Jan 27th game. Hutchinson let in a few weak goals to give up the lead. Got yanked and threw a fit. Broke his stick in the tunnel (could hear it in the arena). Team came back and won. Seems like Cossa taken the 1A spot since then.

Smart decision not to overplay him. Developing him just right so far.
