So is this a fluke season attributed partly to his team's defense and some luck or is he going to be seeing some NHL time soon and have potential to be a successful NHL starter?

Well if you compare his numbers with Jeff Zatkoff (who is a good AHL starter) it shows that it isn't just the Baby Pens defense (though WBS are traditionally a strong defensive team).

Murray - 39GP - 0.942 Save % - 1.51 GAA - 12SO

Zatkoff - 34GP - 0.906 Save% - 2.49 GAA - 3SO

WBS have given up the least goals in the league so team defense is strong but Murray has had an exceptional season. Impossible to tell how much of a fluke it is until next year where Murray should be the AHL starter from the beginning of the year. He's not going to see time in the NHL next year unless a goalie gets injured but he has the size and the mentality to be a potential NHL starter.

Insane stats, I was looking at the AHL goalie leaders last night and I couldn't believe how good those numbers are.

It seems unprecedented for any AHL goalie, let alone a rookie. We struggle with developing forwards but at least the defense and goalie pipelines look bright.

Zatkoff got hurt around the All Star break and has struggled pretty badly ever since he came back, WBS would be in a tough spot if not for Murray playing out of his mind.

Murray won the playoff starter job away from Zatkoff, allowed one goal in his first playoff start and picked up his first playoff shutout tonight.

He also won the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL's top goalie as well as AHL rookie of the year.

I think he'll be playing for the Pens next season. Fleury's been struggling for a while now and I don't see him continuing to be the number 1 starter for another season.

Fleury struggling? Seems like you didn't follow Pens at all this year, or even last season. Fleury was good last year and great this year. Team MVP for a good reason this season. Fleury hasn't struggled since 2013 playoffs. He's redeemed himself, big time, atleast in my eyes. Fleury is undoubtedly the starting goalie for Penguins next season, and atleast couple of seasons beyond that as well.

Good to see Murray continuing his dominance in the playoffs.

I think the last word to describe Fleury the last year and a half is "struggling". More like MVP (for the Pens)...

I thought last year was one of Fleury's best season yet. Unfortunately I think Murray will still be a few years away strictly cause Fleury is #1 for a while and no point having Murray not playing in NHL when he can be playing almost every game in AHL. Only 20 years old, let him develop for a few years

He's going to be in the AHL for at least next year and probably the year after that, then he'll be Fleury's backup if all goes to plan.

I'd like to see him get a game or two next year though if we can make it work capwise.

If we're not including Vasilevsky and Gibson, I don't see any argument against Murray being one of the two best goalie prospects in hockey.

Hellebuyck and Murray are in a class of their own, IMO.

Personally, I'd only put Vasilevsky above them. I'm a huge fan of Gibson, but if he can't stay healthy for a season, I don't see him getting much further than a backup position in the NHL.

have to agree with you!

all the talk is for the young goalies for canada at this years world juniors but i wouldnt be surprised to see Murray have a really good year this year and push for a spot on that team

Leafs missed the boat again, should have gotten this guy in the Kessel deal. :help:

Well, the defense thing went down the ****ter after we traded Despres and Harrington.

So...:(

Harrington was doing really well with Rielly before he got injured.

Despres was looking good in Anaheim

Jury is still out on Joe Morrow.

You kept the best one in Maatta.

Pouliot...surprised he didn't make the team.

You wouldn't be surprised if you had seen him in preseason. Was horrendous! Seems to be getting himself together in the AHL though so hopefully he can push Scuderi out later in the year.

8-1, 2 shutouts, 1.55GAA, .951 save%. Guy is picking up where he left off last season. The AHL is EZ mode for this guy. His backup Tristan Jarry is posting similar stats (3-0, 1.67, .938).

Well yeah but...if they're playing elsewhere, that doesn't really help our pipeline.
