Wally, Boldy, Rossi, Faber, and Yurov are a very good young nucleus. Add in Heidt, Khusnutdinov, Ohgren, Demidov (1st this year), Lambos, etc. and there’s a lot to work with. Just gotta hope Billy manages the cap space he’s going to come into soon well

He was good last year, he's been the best this year.

He is 5 months younger than Askarov and the difference in their AHL career Sv% is 0.03, so... Unless you expect him to play the entire year at .94, he hasn't done much to deserve this level of hype.
Better every step of the way so far. Not that Askarov can’t be a better player, but his profile as a prospect isn’t as strong to this point.

Numbers can only tell so much, especially at the AHL level. Askarov might have the higher ceiling due to his physical gifts but he doesn't have the elite IQ and positioning that Wallstedt has. Wallstedt has been NHL ready almost right from when he was drafted.

Yup. Remember that draft. Was shocked certain teams passed on this goalie. The draft is so important, especially in the players certain clubs pass on.

Well that was my point. Most have said Askarov had a pretty underwhelming career post draft and Wallstedt didn't exactly pull far ahead.

To be fair, pretty much every goalie in pro hockey has better positioning than Askarov. It's the only thing holding him back. He keeps on losing his net and is also usually way too aggressive. I'm not sure if it's really a lack of IQ or if he just wants to put on a show at all costs. Either way, his positioning is faulty and needs to get fixed if he wants to play at NHL level. To some extent he can make up for it with mobility and technique but that won't work long- or even midterm in the NHL. He needs to calm down. I get nervous just watching him.

I don't know if Wallstedt is NHL ready but compared to Askarov, he's a joy to watch.

I don't think it's about Askarov wanting to be a showman but rather stick with what's gotten him this far. Goalie coaches will often say they don't want to change how a goalie plays but rather help them refine their game. What Askarov needs to do to avoid becoming Petr Mrazek though is change his game. Needs to look as Vasilevskiy and realize that's how you play the game as a goalie with a large frame and unreal agility.

I always liked Petr Mrazek though. He's got similar tendencies and likes to play aggressive but I don't think he was ever as nervous or shaky as Askarov. As I said I literally can't watch Askarov without getting nervous myself.

If Askarov could only have Mrazek's positioning (which isn't ideal either) that could get him quite far. Askarov is bigger than Mrazek and I'd say he's at least as good of an athlete and has a similar if not better technique. Mrazek had himself a fair NHL career. He's been good for the Redwings and Canes...at least in parts. Some more difficult years for worse teams as well but overall he's a legit NHL goalie.

Unfortunately I don't think Askarov's positioning is close from Mrazek's. This isn't a question of style or anything, nobody should want to play like Askarov. I'm concerned about the lack of progress regarding Askarov's positioning. Any goalie coach telling him to not work on his positioning should get fired. He's not gonna get there but I agree he should try to take a page out of Vasi's book instead. He needs to be calmer anyway and be it just to keep his defensemen from freaking out watching him.

Any reason McIntyre numbers have dipped so dramatically while Wallstedt seems to be playing very well?

The IA team is frankly mediocre to terrible, defense corps is very young and the Wild have had to pillage all of their best players with all of the injuries to start the season. I don’t have much to offer personally, I find the hockey pretty unwatchable.

Kinda makes Wallstedts performance seem even more insane.

Ehh, he's only played 7 games, and he's on a team with a very young D. He'll probably be up to .900 + save % soon, as everyone gets more settled in their roles.

Askarov - 12 GP, 2.39 GAA and .908 SV% with 0 SO
Wallstedt - 15 GP, 2.11 GAA and a .932 SV% with 2 SO

So far Wallstedt has beaten Askarov in GP, GAA, SV% and SO.
Oh it was a arm infront of the Russian flag, i thought it was a deranged rubber duck...
