Isn’t there rules against that? I can’t remember but I swear you gotta wait a year or until January after arbitration. But I could be wrong

It's probably a couple hundred thousand higher than what would be preferred on a one year deal, but that's the nature of the arbitration system which usually just splits the difference in both sides.

Leafs ultimately get the player at a workable caphit which is all that matters

With Murray gone they are about 450K over the cap with a 21 man roster with Timmins on the team. If he was waived they would end up with 640K in cap space. Which they could use to upgrade the roster or absorb Murray's buyout.

Either way with Samsonov now signed, without a trade between now and camp (Nylander/Brodie), Timmins is in a position where he will be waived or traded. Assuming good health anyway.

I'm sure he would have worked out a 2-3 year deal if he wanted Samsonov long term.

Now with 1 year deal he can flip him much easier if he has another goalie in mind over Samsonov.

Eh, I like Sammy. But he also had a so-so playoffs. I'd rather give him another "show me" year and if he's ultimately proves it then just pay him starter money.

After thinking about it long and hard. For me personally, ideal situation is that Murray goes on LTIR for the entire season, makes his entire 8 million and then moves on. If not: then I'd prefer a buyout instead of a trade with sweetners attached.
