42 out of 43 shots stopped in the previous KHL game and a 35 shutout win today.

Beautiful second effort save to preserve the shutout. Great display of athleticism. This guys got some serious potential. If there's one player I regret the most about the Oilers trading their 16th pick in the Reinhart trade, its that they didn't grab this guy.

Why did MMG go get Zagidulin back? Is Kosechkin injured? That now gives them 3 starting caliber KHL goalies if not.

Had a tough game today, let in a soft GWG from bad angle late in the third. Looks like Kosechkin is back, so presumably he will be back in net for a while.

Samsonov had to stop 34 out of 37 Vs. USA, not enough to get a win though.

He's been good so far at the WJC. Samsonov needs to be better though. He needs to start making those saves that either keep the game tied or keep his team ahead. Right now he's missing those opportunities. I think Russia and Samsonov himself would like to see him be the best goalie at the tournament that he has the potential to be. He's just one step down from being the game breaker he is.

What we have in Ilya Samsonov is a talented goalie who is very confident in himself. He believes in his ability to be the best goalie on the ice at all time. He also has that great lateral movement that gets him into the perfect position nearly all the time. His style is very much like Semyon Varlamov's, especially when Varlamov was younger. A real major hole in his game is his puck handling. Samsonov does not make consistently smart decisions with the puck. It wouldn't be a big deal if Samsonov didn't think he was Martin Brodeur when playing the puck. He does think he's Brodeur and against the USA it finally bit him in the behind.

Got a shutout win Vs. Slovakia, had to stop only 15 shots though.

You can compare Samsonov and Vasilevskiy, but that comparison won't be in Samsonov's favor, as Vasya is just too gifted. And yes, 3 years ago he was noticeably better.

Why not? Samsonov is 3 years younger so a bit hard to compare but his potential seems to be very similar to Vasilevsky.

He might be the best goalie prospect not currently in the NHL, but Vasilevskiy is a generational goalie talent. He's well on his way to being as good as Price or better. I'd guess better. He's just so talented, absolutely no real long-term weaknesses in his game, and his numbers through the different levels against mostly older competition are phenomenal.

Yeah i remember watching Vasilevski as a 17 year old in the WJC. Don't think i have ever seen a more talented goalie at that stage. Samsonov is a great talent as well, he's a very athletic goaltender, but i don't think he's as a talented as Vasilevski was and is, at least not right now. He seems to be getting out of position at times, being all over the place, and it was weird how many times the US were able to beat him five-hole yesterday in the shootout. You would think that he would be able to adapt to that, since they went five-hole all the time as soon as it was evident that it was a weakness of him.

Still a great talent with lots of potential, but i think i expected a little bit more of him at this stage.

Saved 38 out of 39 while being hurt in the end of the second, that was good enough for bronze.

Not rendering judgment on whether you are right or wrong, but it's funny that you bring up Price, because Samsonov actually reminds me of Price from a physical perspective. Outstanding size, athleticism, same calm demeanor etc. it'll be interesting to see how good he is after working with Korn for a few seasons. Samsonov to me appears to be more gifted than Holtby, and we've seen what Trotz and Korn have turned that kid into.
