I don't understand this move when there were many better options, not that Samanov is a bad player, it's just that we have so many young goalies in the system already. Don't think Caps are going anywhere with incompetent GMBM.

Well, Samsonov is a future starter. How many of them do you have in your pipeline?

Sorry but when looking at what was left on the board, I completely understand why the Caps made this pick.

Samsonov has the highest ceiling of anyone they could have taken at 22.

They were probably hoping someone decent would fall, no one did, they picked BPA.

Vogel said there were two guys they didn't expect to be there at 22, but were. So someone else obviously did fall in the eyes of the scouts.

Holtby's the real problem for Samsonov. What incentive would he have to leave Russia with Holtby entrenched as starter?

If you look at goalies development curves Samsonov may well spend the next 3 seasons in the KHL without even thinking about Washington while Holtby can be the starter. Holtby would be 28 by then and Samsonov only 21. Pretty much a perfect age difference for competing goalies in the system.

:shakehead I don't even know..........

It was a great spot to take him. Many scouts actually had him as a mid 1st round talent, and Tim Murray even said that if they didn't make the Lehner trade, they were likely taking Samsonov in this first round.

He's having a great year so far in Russia, Washington is in no rush for a goalie right now too, and in a few more years when Ilya seasons his game a bit more, he'll be ready to make the jump to the NHL and step right in.

In all honesty, I think he's good enough to play right now, but bringing him in slowly is a great luxury for a team to have.

Hows he doing?

He is currently the backup on his KHL team which is likely to come ut of the East. With the starter injured he currently starts for them in the playoffs playing good enough. .919 2.11 2w 2l.

To put it all in perpective he is playing backup behind a pretty good starter Koshechkin was .958 1.32 before his injury.

And then he is being massively outshined by one year older Sorokin who is a starter for the western cup favorite, is .949 1.17 with 11w 1l so far and also coming off a mammoth 3OT 1-0 shutout win yesterday(they lead the series 3-0 now). So there is that. Russian goaltending pipeline is pretty good recently.

If Koshechkin stays injured there is a good chance we will see a duel Sorokin vs. Samsonov in the finals.

If he chokes in the PO again over the next couple seasons, no doubt Gruby gets a the nod/door opens for Samsonov.

Holtby wasn't good in some big PO games last year, IMO has not proved squat that he's a pressure goalie as of yet. He has had a great season, great numbers, but he's also got a tonne of support from a great team in front of him which had minimal injury issues to deal with. It all comes down to PO, if he chokes and the team goes down in the 2nd/3rd round this year I'd say he has one more PO to show he can win before someone else gets an opportunity. IMO a top goalie should have no problems getting this years Caps team into the finals at a minimum. Look at Howard, Detroit gave him the big contract and treated him like a god before some poor PO performances now he's all but done-it can happen.

For Samsonov, showed he could deal with pressure in the KHL PO and at the WJC where he was excellent in the QF game against a higher rated opponent. At such a young age, with such talent it only makes Holtby's margin for error over the next few PO very slim.

This is one of the worse comment I have ever seen.

Holtby has been amazing in the playoffs

1.92 GAA .937sv% in 34 games with a losing record which shows me that the team can't score more than 2 goals a game in the playoffs.

His teams lack of playoff success isn't his fault at all.

Ovy 11 goals and 20 points during that time frame

Backstrom 21 points

their forwards need to be better.

About the Holtby situation, we can never know what will happen in 4 years (and it is unlikely Samsonov will be ready for NHL starting job earlier).

Man, comments like this are killing my faith in hfboards posters. Literally every season Holtby is playing better in the playoffs than during regular season and the stats back it up. He should've had .999 SV% instead of just .944 in the last year playoffs, amirite?

Hated the pick before, love it now. Kid had an amazing year capped off with a championship ring as an 18 year old back up. Hope he has a great world junior tournament next year. Kid had a great year.
