You seem like you're overthinking this. There's no better goalie guy than Kevin Woodley. He thinks Wolf is a top 5 starter right now. He's absolutely winning games for his team. Hutson doesn't contribute to wins. His defensive work is absurdly bad. We're talking early Evan Bouchard being better defensively. Celebrini is already driving play. Smart voters are voting Wolf or Celebrini not all gas no brakes players.
I think you are underthinking this if you rely on smart voters voting for a major player award. Especially when we are comparing an offensive phenom playing in Montreal against a 24-year-old goalie (at the time of the voting) playing in Calgary.

Your take on Hutson, someone who is playing 23-27 minutes per night for the team that shot up the standings once he started playing a major role, is also absurdly bad but that's outside of the scope of this thread.

Nah, the absurdity is a guy playing 23 minutes per night who can't even defend at an AHL level. I've seen what I've seen. Hutson isn't a player who helps you win. I'd way, way prefer Guhle.

I think voters are getting smarter. Sure the MTL writers will vote for him, heck they all left Iginla off their ballots the year Theodore won the Hart, but everyone else knows what's going on.

It's tough for a young goalie to push for awards, goalie stats are so much about consistency that a couple bad games (even just by the team in front of them) could take a .926 2.22 goalie from top 3 for Vezina consideration down to a much more ordinary .914 2.50 top 6-10 goalie in the league.

while scoring no points and being on the ice for 3+ even strength goals against just takes a centre or a dman to something like

13 + 16 in 30 games -> 13 + 16 in 33 games
3 + 29 in 39 games -> 3 + 29 in 42 games

which don't really look all that different and dropping out of a top 3 ranking is a lot harder than dropping down 5+ spots when ranked further back (and taking into account so many more players in those positions it's a much smaller drop)
#45 pt/g F -> #57 pt/g F or #8 pt/g D -> #13 pt/g D

I think Wolf's consistency and to some extent the consistency of the defense in front of him has to be pretty insane for a rookie compared to his Calder competition for those stat watching to help with their decision.

Let's face it, more often than not a successful team equals a successful goalie, and vice versa. Which is what Flames/Wolf are proving once again over the last month.

The whole Blackwood situation just once again exposed how little deeper than the most superficial stats goalie evaluation goes, especially since this whole conversation originated from the discussion about Wolf's Calder chances, a trophy that is all about optics. Where people once again argue (argued?) that Hutson can't win because of his +/-. So the same applies to Wolf, if he has a losing season and his Sv% dips below .910, he has no chance and the quality of his play might have nothing to do with it.
Dustin Wolf: 15-6-2, 2.50 GAA, .916
Dan Vladar: 6-8-5, 3.08 GAA, .888

Not a single unbiased person can look at that and think to themselves Calgary’s success as a team is leading to Wolf’s success.

Yes, nobody is thinking that. That's the "vice versa" part of my post. As long as Wolf continues playing well Calgary will be reasonably successful as well.
