G Dustin Wolf (2019, 214th, CGY)

Wolf had posted a 93.6 SV% through his first three games and is passing the eye test.

What kind of SV, GAA, and GP would Wolf need to put up this season to be a Calder candidate or even possibly Vezina? (let me dream about the Vezina)

He would need to take over the starter role

Ullmark won the Vezina with less than 50 starts. Wolf looks like he'll be starting around 40, maybe a few more, which could definitely be enough for the Calder assuming his numbers are really good.

Wolf is better than Vladar, so he should get enough work.

I know he's regarded as a Calder Dark horse, but I'm still surprised about how little talk there is about him. Looking great to start this season and the stats back it up.

If he continues his play I wouldn't be surprised to see Vladar traded and then Wolfie will be pushing 50+ starts for the year easily. He's looking elite already. Depends on how the team does if he gets Calder votes or not, if the Flames collapse his numbers will plummet and he'll be out of the already non-existent conversation.

I really want the FLames to draft a high end centre this year or next...

Pretty much this. Everyone is waiting for everything about Flames to collapse inevitably.

And the collapse might have started already, 4 or more goals allowed in the last 3 games, Sv% below .910 (which is still good but trending downwards fast) and the Flames are out of the playoff spot for what might be the first time this season?

Michkov and Celebrini get the hype but this kid is the real deal, I wonder if they’ll try to get him signed to a team friendly contract long-term quickly , it’s kinda rare to see an NHL rookie goalie do so well so fast, very interesting.

He stopped getting all the home games. I don't know how or why but the team is significantly better on home ice.

Never seen such a disparity, like watching two different teams.

Have coaches started telling their players to shoot high yet
Lol

As if the best hockey players in the world don’t know to shoot high. Even if he’s huge, hockey players are taught to shoot for the ears.

Wolf Is SmAlL sHoOt HiGh

You should be working for an NHL team

Dennis Hildeby is 6'7" and you beat him high.. Lots of goalies get beat with a good shot high.

Hildeby makes himself small, Wolf knows what he needs to do to make himself big which is why he's so good.

Since this post Wolf is 6-1-1 with a 1.98 GAA and a .931 save percentage for whoever is wondering.

The Flames, however, were barely above .500 (5-4-2) while playing against some of the weakest competition in the league (7 of those 11 games were against teams outside the PO spot) before their most recent 2 [good] wins.

It's good for them that the period before my posts turned out to be the "bend-not-break" situation, but I don't think it's hard to see where I was coming from. They were definitely bending, both collectively and personally.

It would have been much more in the spirit of, you know, a discussion board if you opposed what I said on December 10th, not with a month of hindsight.

The Flames is not a very good team. They have overachieved so far thanks to Wolf

This thread is about Wolf not the Flames

As a Nucks fan, I'm rooting for him. He's fun to watch, incredibly athletic and if Saros can be a small top end goalie, I don't see why this guy can't.

I like seeing abberations in the league, and this guy certainly is one.

Let's face it, more often than not a successful team equals a successful goalie, and vice versa. Which is what Flames/Wolf are proving once again over the last month.

The whole Blackwood situation just once again exposed how little deeper than the most superficial stats goalie evaluation goes, especially since this whole conversation originated from the discussion about Wolf's Calder chances, a trophy that is all about optics. Where people once again argue (argued?) that Hutson can't win because of his +/-. So the same applies to Wolf, if he has a losing season and his Sv% dips below .910, he has no chance and the quality of his play might have nothing to do with it.

You seem like you're overthinking this. There's no better goalie guy than Kevin Woodley. He thinks Wolf is a top 5 starter right now. He's absolutely winning games for his team. Hutson doesn't contribute to wins. His defensive work is absurdly bad. We're talking early Evan Bouchard being better defensively. Celebrini is already driving play. Smart voters are voting Wolf or Celebrini not all gas no brakes players.
