Anyone finding that FOX’s picture quality to-date is really substandard (particularly the 4k feed)?

People make fun of Italy for not making the WC after winning the Euro

But us not qualifying for 2018 is by far a much bigger embarrassment. We played against abunch of teams that have basically semi-pros in their lineup and still couldn't qualify. It's also why I am skeptical of the "new" generation. They're still not as good as the old teams, more hype maybe. But talent? Nope. Just as mediocre if not worse. Less heart as well.
See this is where I disagree. The talent, especially up front, is definitely there. The biggest issue the last 3 cycles for the US has been coaching. If this team does have one big weakness it's in net though... basically the Peters era Hurricanes of World Soccer.
I think we get through the group 2-1 or 1-1-1 on goal diff, and then get our stuff pushed in by the Dutch.

I’ve been watching us since the early 90’s and Thomas effing Dooley. It’s inspiring to see the skill we can now bring to this tournament. A combination passing play that sends a guy in on an easy finish? That was a World Cup level play, and I’ve never really seen it once in my life. We’re young and impatient, and I have no idea how far we can go but just to see us belong at this level in terms of skill makes me very happy.

I’m at Duke today for an exam and they have the soccer on in the waiting room. You don’t see that every day.

I met Gareth Bale’s parents in Barbados on a snorkeling excursion. Lovely down to earth folks. He looks so much like his Mom.

Having to take Dest off for Yedlin due to foul trouble and that stupid penalty did us in. We were also pretty poor offensively in the 2nd half. Pulisic had that great through ball to Weah but otherwise his corners and aerial passes were awful. Probably could have lost if not for the Turner save. I'll take the disappointing draw.

We didn’t capitalize on our chances even in the second half. We should/could have scored 3 (Canes like ugh).

We have tremendous mf depth (Tyler Adams is superb) but forward and defense not so much. Having to bring on yedlin at this stage in his career is indicative of our lack of depth. Also, Not a fan of morris or acosta.

BTW: I realize that Pulisic is the “man” but he is not a free kick specialist. He’s awful. Team needs someone else for that role.

Yup, he was bad on all the set pieces.

Well there is some infrastructure to it imo, as most talent that appears to have legit potential still goes to Europe for prime development. There are more that stay local for longer it seems but it still is a thing to go there vs here.

That requires us having leagues good enough to develop true stars at the international level, which requires more infrastructure than we’ll ever have. MLS isn’t enough, and it’s hard to imagine a youth system strong enough.
MLS shoots itself in the dick with the salary cap rules in that regard. When the league was in its first decade or so they needed the cap but it needs to be ditched. Entire teams, outside of the designated player rules, make less than half of what Sebastian Aho does in terms of their entire cap space. Less than 5m per year for 20 guys, even taking designated players into account the Slavin-Burns pairing for example makes more than the entire Charlotte FC team did last year.
So until that's resolved the league is stuck as a developmental league for players from the Americas until they prove themselves enough to make real money overseas in their prime, and as a retirement home for washed up players when they want to make a few more million in a low pressure environment. The league is in a good enough financial position right now to spend a good 3-4 times what they do right now in cap to actually be able to retain some of the talent they develop.

wow that is horrifically low compared to what some EPL teams can spend. So are MLS teams working with the Chicago Wolves salary structure?

Standouts for me:

The good: Tyler Adams. Really liked his game.

The Bad: Dest....was not a fan. Biggest issue seemed to be his footspeed where he was repeatedly beaten on the outside like a rented mule and would almost necessitate taking a penalty.

I don't watch the US a lot but I don't love the style they displayed today. With the shape Wales presented them I would have like us to dribbled a little more to beat a man and break down the shape and utilize more diagonal passes to get behind the coverage. That style isn't easy to play as you need creativity/vision/speed/ball control and those are all high end skills. They really could use a Marty Necas on turf.

Yeah basically. I mean league minimum in MLS is about what an NHL ELC guarantees as the two-way part of the contract, and a guy on league minimum one-way deal in the NHL would need to cut off about 150K to get under the max allowed by the league. There's a few DPs that make decent bank. I think Higuain is somewhere around 6M (and consider that's over 34 games), but he's over the hill and that's still less than a guy like Pulisic makes at Chelsea

True, we probably should have had that Aaronson missed header at least. Ironically enough that was probably Pulisic's best aerial pass too.

So when they lose to England and Wales beats Iran it’s pretty much over right, since England will already be through with nothing to play for?

It's very simple now. Beat England and you're through, draw with England and hang 7 on Iran (lol) and you have a chance, lose to England and you're out.
I’m a big soccer fan and watch a lot of EPL, La Liga and to a lesser degree the Bundesliga.

Unfortunately, we have pretty low odds beating this years version of England. Beyond their starters, they have a better bench than many of our starters.

Re: MLS and also our academy system. To their credit we’ve developed a pool of players that are now in demand in Europe and playing in good Leagues for solid squads. Our technical skill is light years ahead of where we were years ago and in many respects approaches Euro standards. Good players just need to go overseas now and this current group of players have made it easier for future players to get offers too.

What’s holding us back this year is the lack of big goal scoring/dynamic forward(s) coupled with a shortcoming in defensive talent (Dest is coming off an injury so I don’t think we saw the best he is capable of).
