I get it. They play a cold weather sport in cold weather cities with no real vacation time during a season. I can see why they might want to spend their one week off in Miami where it’s 82° right now. I bet that’s what most non-all stars are doing.

I get it.

There's a reason why the Super Bowl is in states like Florida, California or Arizona and the Pro Bowl was in Hawaii every year.

I live in New York where it is currently 7 degrees out. As much as I would love to see the All-Star game in person, I wouldn't want players to have to come here for a superfluous game, this time of the year.
NFL is now using their draft as a prize to their colder cities. Cleveland, Chicago, Philly, KC this year have hosted the draft. Will continue to rotate that around their northern cities. Expect to see Seattle, Denver, Indy, etc. get them as we move forward.

Why do some people have such visceral reactions to this?

Obviously they would prefer the warmer weather. A good majority of the league play in cold weather climate cities. It's not rocket science.

Some of you act like players should have no opinions whatsoever.
Same type of people who would go up to players when they’re out with their families and tell them they had a bad game last week.

Their NBA counterparts are headed to Utah for their ASG.

Bettman will keep witling away potential host cities until he gets what he really wants: an annual hockey bash in Tempe, Arizona.

I agree. Host the draft held in late-June in Northern NHL cities that have fans that will fill the building and put the early-February ASG in warmer Southern cities.

It depends on the time of year. From June to September one would be making the wrong choice in going to Vegas over Chicago.
Not sure how the weather is in Chicago during that time.

But Vegas at times get unbearable with how hot it gets, ive been there once in june and the avg daily temp was like +47 celcius.

I gurantee all the players have a bonus clause in their contract regarding making the All Star Game.

Its more about spending time with their family and getting an actual vacation/week off rather than the money,
Sure, but how big is that clause? And I guarantee you, if the money is big enough they will go. If the pay is say 500k, that's a big chunk even for McDavid.

Put it into perspective: if your boss came to you and said hey, we need you at this event during the weekend you're supposed to have your holiday. But we'll pay you one month's salary for those 2-3 days. That ok with you? I can bet 90% of the people here are going to say yes, and the family can go to the Bahamas with themselves.

Hold the All-Star Game during pre-season and maybe you will see fewer players try to get out of it.

-NHL players don't need to be in mid-season form to half-ass it in 3 on 3 shinny. They don't even need to be sober.
-All-Star Game VS a February Break? Players much prefer to have the break. Now, All-Star Game VS more pre-season hockey? Might be a different picture. (And lets face it, the players who get picked for the All-Star Game aren't exactly fighting for a final roster spot on their team)
-"Oh we don't want the All-Star Game in cold weather cities" Well, its in September now. Fewer cities are "cold weather" in September than in February. More potential places to host it. (Assuming this is even a real issue)

It'd be dumb to just follow the players on this. Revenue-wise, it's somewhat important to get these events in places like New York, Toronto, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Montreal.
They're not talking about those cities lol. We both know this.

This bonus' clause isnt a thing.

Imagine if your boss asked you to go on a paid business trip to promote your brand and you refused because it was "too cold". What a bunch of children.

These players need to do what's best to grow the game, not work on their tan.
Define paid. I'm pretty sure they aren't collecting their regular paychecks. I'm not going anywhere on my time just for a per diem.

The NFL now uses the Superbowl as a prize to give to cities that build new domed stadiums or in the case of New York, a new stadium (hence why they played at Metlife within the past decade). Detroit, Minnesota, Indianapolis, and they gave it to SF recently outdoors due to it being a new stadium (better weather but not great in February). The other thing about football, outside of domed stadiums, weather will impact the game, and while weather is a big consideration for fans/media/travel, they want a game that favors the ability to pass and kick the football, and not a game bogged down by heavy snow and winds causing a defensive battle dependent on the run game.

I do think the players are whiny bitches, but growing the game is the owners' problem not theirs. I realize the cap is tied to expenses and revenues and that player actions affect those things, but players are out to get their individual piece of the pie as they should be.

lol at the responses from people ITT that likely were very unhappy having to go back into the office after working from home. God forbid NHL players want their little vacation break to actually feel like a vacation.

There's no purpose to sending people to the office other than control. There is an obvious purpose to the ASG and even more obvious purpose tot he ASG being in places that care about hockey even if I personally don't care at all.

Which is why there should be a pretty hefty bonus paid for each player participating. Not only would it mean that players actually want to go and wouldn't like to find any excuse of an injury to skip it, they would probably put some effort into the actual event if there was money tied up to it.

Like I said, if my employer comes to me and tell me you have to take part in this promo event for our company, it's going to be when your holiday was set and you have to go, nothing really you gain from it but hey it's a fun experience! I would be pretty pissed about it. BUT, if I was being paid 50-100% of my monthly salary to do say, I would be jumping to go and screw my holiday plans. These players are getting paid plenty, but even they have a number that will motivate them to go.
