I get it. They play a cold weather sport in cold weather cities with no real vacation time during a season. I can see why they might want to spend their one week off in Miami where it’s 82° right now. I bet that’s what most non-all stars are doing.
NFL is now using their draft as a prize to their colder cities. Cleveland, Chicago, Philly, KC this year have hosted the draft. Will continue to rotate that around their northern cities. Expect to see Seattle, Denver, Indy, etc. get them as we move forward.I get it.
There's a reason why the Super Bowl is in states like Florida, California or Arizona and the Pro Bowl was in Hawaii every year.
I live in New York where it is currently 7 degrees out. As much as I would love to see the All-Star game in person, I wouldn't want players to have to come here for a superfluous game, this time of the year.
Same type of people who would go up to players when they’re out with their families and tell them they had a bad game last week. Why do some people have such visceral reactions to this?
Obviously they would prefer the warmer weather. A good majority of the league play in cold weather climate cities. It's not rocket science.
Some of you act like players should have no opinions whatsoever.
Their NBA counterparts are headed to Utah for their ASG.I get it. They play a cold weather sport in cold weather cities with no real vacation time during a season. It depends on the time of year. From June to September one would be making the wrong choice in going to Vegas over Chicago.I get that. If I have a choice between attending a conference in Chicago or Las Vegas, I'm choosing Vegas and it's not just for the nightlife.
I agree. Host the draft held in late-June in Northern NHL cities that have fans that will fill the building and put the early-February ASG in warmer Southern cities.NFL is now using their draft as a prize to their colder cities. Not sure how the weather is in Chicago during that time.It depends on the time of year. From June to September one would be making the wrong choice in going to Vegas over Chicago.
Sure, but how big is that clause? And I guarantee you, if the money is big enough they will go. If the pay is say 500k, that's a big chunk even for McDavid.I gurantee all the players have a bonus clause in their contract regarding making the All Star Game.
Its more about spending time with their family and getting an actual vacation/week off rather than the money,
Chicago is an amazing city to visit in the summer both from a weather and activities perspective. Not sure how the weather is in Chicago during that time.
But Vegas at times get unbearable with how hot it gets, ive been there once in june and the avg daily temp was like +47 celcius.
They're not talking about those cities lol. We both know this. It'd be dumb to just follow the players on this. Revenue-wise, it's somewhat important to get these events in places like New York, Toronto, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Montreal.
This bonus' clause isnt a thing.Sure, but how big is that clause? And I guarantee you, if the money is big enough they will go. If the pay is say 500k, that's a big chunk even for McDavid.
Put it into perspective: if your boss came to you and said hey, we need you at this event during the weekend you're supposed to have your holiday. But we'll pay you one month's salary for those 2-3 days. That ok with you? I can bet 90% of the people here are going to say yes, and the family can go to the Bahamas with themselves.
Define paid. I'm pretty sure they aren't collecting their regular paychecks. I'm not going anywhere on my time just for a per diem.Imagine if your boss asked you to go on a paid business trip to promote your brand and you refused because it was "too cold". What a bunch of children.
These players need to do what's best to grow the game, not work on their tan.
I assumed All-Star weekend time of the year, but yes, you're right. It depends on the time of year. From June to September one would be making the wrong choice in going to Vegas over Chicago.

I guarantee you they dont.
The NFL now uses the Superbowl as a prize to give to cities that build new domed stadiums or in the case of New York, a new stadium (hence why they played at Metlife within the past decade). Detroit, Minnesota, Indianapolis, and they gave it to SF recently outdoors due to it being a new stadium (better weather but not great in February). The other thing about football, outside of domed stadiums, weather will impact the game, and while weather is a big consideration for fans/media/travel, they want a game that favors the ability to pass and kick the football, and not a game bogged down by heavy snow and winds causing a defensive battle dependent on the run game.I get it.

I do think the players are whiny bitches, but growing the game is the owners' problem not theirs. I realize the cap is tied to expenses and revenues and that player actions affect those things, but players are out to get their individual piece of the pie as they should be.Imagine if your boss asked you to go on a paid business trip to promote your brand and you refused because it was "too cold". What a bunch of children.

Sort of, they see the improvements to their salary due to the cap rising by growing the game.I do think the players are whiny bitches, but growing the game is the owners' problem not theirs.
lol at the responses from people ITT that likely were very unhappy having to go back into the office after working from home. God forbid NHL players want their little vacation break to actually feel like a vacation.
Which is why there should be a pretty hefty bonus paid for each player participating. Not only would it mean that players actually want to go and wouldn't like to find any excuse of an injury to skip it, they would probably put some effort into the actual event if there was money tied up to it.Define paid. I'm pretty sure they aren't collecting their regular paychecks. I'm not going anywhere on my time just for a per diem.
