Friedman- Players hate going to cold weather cities for ASG, NHL possibly reducing the eligible host cities

It'd be dumb to just follow the players on this. Revenue-wise, it's somewhat important to get these events in places like New York, Toronto, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Montreal.
Why?

As a STH for one of the teams you listed, I could not care less if we ever get the all-star game again.

Cancel this most boring weekend of NHL season.
Agreed. I did not watch any of the skills competition. Saw the last 2 "games" on Saturday, but was doing something else and just had it on. Really have no interest.

Would it be so bad to bring back East vs West in a regular 5 on 5 , 60 min ASG game format ?

or a mini tournament in september where each divisions form a team and they play against achother ?

If they want to keep the skills competition, could it be hockey related only ( surfboards with the pool  )

They need to pull an NFL and do it at the end of the year or something, this ASG was especially bad.
I liked what the NFL did.

They just bit the bullet and made the ASG non-contact. It was a lot more competitive with the danger element removed.

Guys just aren't going to give effort knowing they could get hurt and have to be back next week.

It's also good that it's at the end of the year in that regard, although I don't know if the NHL offseason is short enough for that to make a difference.

I'm sure the NHL is overjoyed with Friedman reporting this. LOL. While most pro athletes are woefully out of touch I find NHLers to be especially so. They occupy such a tenuous place in the sports/entertainment consciousness and yet feel free to come up with these gems. It's just so out of touch. I also find it humorous that posters are trying to compare these guys to the average joe. Come on. They are highly paid athletes who play a game that get every whim taken care of. You can't suck it up for a weekend to play in Winnipeg or Columbus? It's so tone deaf. The NHL like all other sports/entertainment is based on consumer engagement. Alienate the consumer and you're screwed.

It really is bizarre. The vast majority of these players come from cold places in the first place. Look at the NBA, where the players make way more money and happily go to wherever the all star game is and have fun with it. Look at the NFL, the most financially successful league in the world, where big players will even sign wherever.

Not that the all star game is key to the NHL and the players making more money, but their viewpoint is so stupid. NHL players seem to not grasp their place in the North American sports landscape.

Agreed. The players want the cash and all the amenities that come with being an NHL star but most seem to want to be anonymous off the ice. You can't have it both ways, if you want to grown your salaries then they have to do a better job engaging the fans.

Once again, what the OP wrote is not what Friedman said. Friedman basically said that the NHL talked to the all-stars about what might get more players to take part in ASGs. One of the responses was that they liked being in South Florida this time of year.

Friedman did not report that the players said they only wanted to play ASGs in warm weather locals. He also did not report that the NHL was taking this one response to heart.

What he did say was that he thinks the NHL will go to a limited ASG rotation that includes the warm weather locales as well as Toronto, Montreal, New York, and CHicago. He does not give any indication of this speculation being based on him having inside info from the league.

Frankly, given how he has talked about loving being on the beach and such in Florida, I think he's just trying to push this idea to increase his chances of getting a work trip to somewhere warm every February.

With all second-hand reports like this on these boards, posters should really try to read or listen to the original material. Here's the podcast version of Friedman's radio hit. The relevant part is about 4/5 of the way through.

People are turning away from the stanley cup finals as it goes too late in the year. Not sure people are going to tune into watch and all-star game in late June or July.

Despite all the hate the game gets, the All Star weekend is a big money ticket for the league. Don't see them really changing too much with the timing or how it's done.

Now, they don't need the All-Star game to do it, but in my experience as a kid when Toronto had the All-Star game the highlight was the fan fest associated with it. I think those types of events are great for bringing in kids who may already have a passion for hockey to learn about the history of the game, see the Cup (as a Torontonian not really a big deal to see, since it's on perma display at HHOF I had been to a bunch, but it is for most markets), see cool collectable stands with jerseys, cards or other memorabilia, maybe have some interactive games. Toronto has the HHOF which offers some of that (history and the interactive games), but the fan fest takes it to the next level. I'll never forget getting to meet Terrible Ted tell the story of trying to form the NHLPA at one of the areas set up at the fan fest.

I think events like that associated with the All-Star game are more important for building fandom among younger fans, than the actual skills and All-Star game. Like, in certain markets, maybe you can't afford to take your kid to a game often, but you probably have the cash to take them to a fan event, and these are probably better built for the attention span of younger kids.

I really don't care about the All-Star game being in Toronto next year in regards to the Skill and 3 on 3 tournament. No chance I fork over whatever ridiculous price those end up going for. But, I am excited to go to the fan event for the collectors expo, and I'm sure some of my family and friends with younger children are excited to take them to the Fan Expo, I know my Cousin's 6 and 10 year old who play hockey are going to absolutely love it, and I'm sure tons of family's who are priced out of Leaf games but have kids playing hockey are going to enjoy it too.

Being in warm weather doesn't make it any more watchable.
The theory is more guys would want to be there. There is a big thing being made about how Ovi usually would skip over, but because of warm weather he opted to play rather than get suspended.

Something tells me that his kid had more to do with him wanting to go this year then anything.

Even if everyone does go like you say it's not more watchable.

That’s fair, and perhaps you’re right. I do think player sentiment towards the ASG has changed quite drastically since 2000 though. Felt then like it was a much bigger deal than it is now. But that could just be my perception
Agreed on both fronts here. I am not sure if I was more engaged because I was younger, the format was better, hockey was less accessible than now, or likely a combination of all of them. Not going to lie, I did enjoy the NA vs World format, although I fully realize such a concept would never be allowed to exist in today's world.

I 100% support the All Star Game NEVER coming to Winnipeg.
Absolutely zero interest in that.
It would be cool to host a draft.
Winnipeg was scheduled to host one prior to the decision to sell and move the team so it would be a nice full circle kind of thing to host one.

It's generally very hot and sunny here for the summers so no worry about that.

It honestly makes more sense to put the ASG in non-NHL cities than it would Toronto/Montreal/NYC.

Have it in New Orleans, Houston, Charlotte, Memphis, Atlanta, etc... If the league can make sure there is NHL level ice outdoors in Cali they can put a rink in any big enough arena.

The fans will travel. Locals will check out the oddities and maybe become interested. It's all ad money. Doesn't make sense to spend a bunch in cities where the fans are already invested.
Really? I dont think that makes sense at all

They need to pull an NFL and do it at the end of the year or something, this ASG was especially bad.
That would be even worse

They should make one of these fake synthetic ice rink on the beach and have the skill competition there, or in the Everglade if they want to get rid of a few bloated contract.
