He is pretty much the defensive version of Brian Little. He is a puck on and off his stick quick player that is very adapt at finding seams and holes in the offensive end but prefers to let his partner/other players on the ice carry the puck and set things up.

I think he is capable of rushing the puck more but it isn't is go to game and given the minutes he plays it may not be beneficial to having him rush it aggressively all the time.

As for the play going up the right a lot is that more so because that is what other teams are giving us in the nz? It's hard to tell not being at the games and watching live to see the other teams nz configuration but there was a noticeable shift in the side we broke out of last night when they moved Pionk up with JoMo. We got way more breakouts up the left which leads me to believe the passing lanes were open.

I still think we would get a lot more out of JoMo offensively if we adapted a much more new age offensive system based around aggressive switching and player movement. That type of scheme would really play into his ability to facilitate with his passing and his ability to get lost in coverage and get his shot away quickly. It's why he was having a lot of offensive success in 2019.
I was just talking historically about the Jets rushing from the right side with the D. Could be that's just where they have always had their talent when it comes to rushing D men, even Enstrom was a pass first guy. I think it’s by design though, Buff, Trouba, Myers and this season Pionk and Poolman rush the puck far more than any D on the left side, other than Morrissey recently.

The way things are going the Leafs are going to finally win a first round series and it will be against WPG.
This would be the darkest timeline, no doubt about that.

It definitely was by design when we had those three on RD. I'm not so sure now, but rushing isn't Morrissey's game anyhow. I'm just thinking that if I was game planning that pairing I would shift my nz shape to make breakout passes more difficult for JoMo and give Poolman the easy out/passing option. You often see Morrissey scan up ice before moving it to Poolman which to me provides some evidence to support my assertion.

I have been of the thought that the org is going about it wrong with regards to Morrissey's partner. Instead of grabbing a defensive minded player they need to go out and get a dmen who likes the puck on his stick and can rush the puck effectively. That player doesn't even need to be great in the dzone. Morrissey had great success with three of those player types of different ability levels in Buff, Trouba and Myers.

Morrissey can be a top pairing guy, but he’s not the one to carry the load offensively. The Jets favour the right side when rushing the puck with the D, it’s been that way with Buff, Trouba, Myers, Christ even Poolman ffs. Morrissey has shown lately and in particular last night he can be very adept at jumping into the play and supporting the offense, but he’s not the guy to drive it, he’s miscast in that role. He’s good at supporting the breakout, holding the blueline and probably has the best gap on the team. His play between the bluelines over the past 20 games has been extremely good.
this is very true.. the jets play/ rely on morrissey like hes a stud # 1 defenseman and a norris candidate....but hes not on that level. On a great team he is the 2nd best defenseman. With that said jets are not in a position to acquire a stud defenseman. They are just going to have to compete with a stud goalie, stud top 6, and defensive depth. Earlier in the season they had all 3 going...now they currently have none going and playoffs are right around the corner.
Next year I want to see Pionk, Morrissey, Heinola, Stanley, Demelo and a quality defenseman free agent signing... plus a new coach who will alllow the younger guys to play real minutes.
The potential is still here for this team...but the gm, coach and leadership from this team(schef wheeler) is laying a dud this season.

Stepping back a bit, with Ehlers and Lurch out, for a while.......we needed some step-ups from our highest paid "big guns"
Fail.
Lurch didn’t help us win last night. I think it’s a team/coaching issue.

I don’t want to hear any more excuses. So and so was out etc.

Love that analogy and it is apt. Little, in his prime, was a small, smart C who could do most everything well but wasn't a 1C on a championship team. JoMo and the team need a a 1RW much more than a new coach at this point; until then, Pionk will have to fill the role despite being a shrimp. Maurice needs to get over his obsession with size, because he has no alternative.

Back to the analogy--the other similarity is that Little was absolutely pilloried on these boards when the team (or his infamous RW) was not performing to expectations. You will recall how quickly Morrissey was written off by some here. The piling on is a real turn off for some of us, so we just stop posting much.

Thought the team played well last night and expect they will turn it around soon. I'm very disappointed Heinola hasn't been given a chance yet, but there is plenty of youth on the team now in Stanley and Vesa.
The Jets are not nearly as bad as they have looked these past 7 games, but not nearly as good as they seemed earlier in the season. It's not much more complicated than that.

Agreed. I really liked Morrissey's game last night.

He's a very good D-man but he requires an adept partner to play with. Whenever he gets that he plays better, past or present. I think the Poolman experiment has proven to be an abject failure and the Jets would have been much better off having brought a young guy up (Samberg or Heinola on his off side) for the year as a learning experience with the consequent impact on the standings. I don't think the outcome would have been that different. I get the ELC aspect regarding those two but that should be a secondary consideration, not primary, as it seems to have been.

Giving Morrissey a partner he has to carry translates into poorer play from Josh, because he's not able to play his game. IMO.

Exactly, it's the same as with Little, you give him two good wingers that have a clue defensively and like the puck on their stick and he flourishes.

The Ehlers Little Perrault and the Ladd Little and Wheeler lines where fantastic as he just had to concentrate on getting his wingers the puck in good spots and getting open to finish the plays.

Morrissey and Little are high end play facilitators and finishers but they aren't true play drivers and that is fine you don't need them to be. But to get the most out of them its best to play them with a player who likes to tilt the ice towards the offensive end.

I will admit I was overly harsh on Little but his type of game wasn't suited to playing with Laine who is a play finisher but does nothing else.

RE: Morrissey

this guy has been so disappointing since the 2018 season. idk if it's the fact he got his contract and he doesn't GAF anymore, or what the case is. His hands, brain everything basically have turned off since signing that deal. he does have a good game here or there, but consistently there's been far more bad than good. guy is paid like a top-pair dman, 27th in terms of cap-hit, and 12th in terms of LHD cap-hit & is basically in the prime-age of his career. When is he going to show some top-pair results? Independent of his partner, his game has been tragically bad. Congrats he had a good game against Ottawa (which we still lost)!

He needs a good partner to take some of the pressure off because he puts too much on himself. He's better when he plays with DeMelo, and DeMelo is better when he plays with Morrissey.

Over the last 20 games since Morrissey has improved his play significantly he has very positive metrics with both Pionk and DeMelo.

Small sample sure but to me it indicates that his game is at a point where if played with a quality/competent partner the pairing will have success.

He can't carry a crap player in Poolman is all his recent metrics with playing with Tucker say. Pionk can't carry a crap player Forbert (now that his game has gone in the shitter) either and has worse overall stats then Morrissey the last 20 games.

Get both a solid partner and they will play have good results imo.

Frankly, the amount of ice time that Poolbort is getting.....is killing us. But no need to change that up, one supposes....

morrissey is paid like a high-end dmen. he should be playing like one independent of partner. i've seen plenty of players on this team carry crap partners or linemates with success. look at his season-to-date he's been dreadful! look at last year too. this guy is getting paid 6.5m and you are content with his individual play? the guy might just be happy to have his contract and is mailing it in.

he's only ever posted top-pair results when he's played with Buff or Trouba (over a large sample). 2 RD's that were some of the best in the NHL during their time as a Jet. Trouba could carry stuart and beaulieu. Buff could carry anyone. like i said 12th highest paid LD, 27 highest paid D. this guy is getting paid to perform like a top-guy, he should be elevating players.

I was not happy with his play last year or the first 25 or so games this year. I am happy with his individual play the last 20 or so games and if he keeps playing like he has been he will post good results with a competent partner.

He is not being paid elite dmen cash so expecting him to carry replacement caliber players behind our weak as hell defensive forward core is not something I'm I'm going to bash him for if he keeps his recent form up.

Go look around the league how many similarly paid dmen have a partner near as bad? Most good dmen have a good partner, quality of teammates matter and there is no shame if Morrissey is just one half of a good pairing moving forward.

How much worse would Mark look if he had to carry around Thompson and Lewis game in and game out? Heck we saw how offensively inept he looked playing with Appelton and Copp who are third line talents. Talent generally requires talent to play with unless you are a McDavid or Crosby that can turn plungers into stars.

I agree . I’ve never been a fan of his. Small and soft and especially this year over his head when he plays top talent.

maybe we can get 1D and shelter him on 2nd or 3rd pair so he can play against talent around his own

he's 13th in cap hit (sorry i put 12th before) and 4th(!) in actual compensation this year. id qualify that as close to high-end $$$

morrissey QoT is not terrible. remember it takes into account Fwds too. yes his partner is bad. but his individual play isolated from his partner is also terrible. he's also paid a lot of dough, he should be elevating his line.

look at how ehlers elevates each line he's on for example. even perreault when he's in the bottom-6. scheifele played w/ apples and copp for a couple games lol and we all know scheifele is a shell of what he used to be rewind to 16-17 scheifele would still produce no matter who he was with (wheeler, laine, ehlers, perreault for example). it's time to consider Morrissey might be a shell of what he sued to be too or perhaps we gave him to much credit considering who he was paired with for most of his career prior to that deal being inked.

even scheifele-appleton-copp were getting chances. nearly 56% in CF and xGF. the GF is what was lacking, which is lacking everywhere on this team.

he's a good complimentary top4d if he's with a player of a caliber like buff or trouba, but is being paid like a top-pair D

First of all the Buff excuse, guy would be pushing 40, almost 300 lbs, legs were gone. See Wheeler, when the legs go its over, what is he -30.

Second, a GM has to have a plan, there was no plan for the D, this is the second year of relying on bottom of the barrel scraps. Beteto Sbisa Beaulieu Forbort Benn, no other GM in the league would get away with that without losing his job.

Maurice ran the team into the ground in April. Way too many minutes for guys like Stastny and Wheeler. He should have been rotating in fresh legs. He also over played Helle and now he looks gassed like the rest of them.
Buff at 45 years old would still be better than Poolman, Forbort and Booboo .
