Trading both Marner and Nylander probably isn't the best solution anyway even if it lands Petro
Depends on who the Leafs will be getting after they trade Willie and MM.
Lets say for some reason Leafs end up just getting picks and prospects for Willie and MM. Then use that cap to sign UFAs like Pietra(9.5mil), Toffeolli(5mil), and Gudas(3.5mil). Think the Leafs is a much more balance team than they are today.

That’s working way more for Leafs favor, also Willie and AJ total is under 10.5mil. Finding two replacements players even at min 750k/each will only allow Pietra with 9mil.
Honestly, the team will have more balance with Pietra and other players with both Marner and Willie gone than just having one of them gone. It will be the same story over again.

try it on cap friendly. I was personally using 8.5 because that was the number that was last rumoured he wanted from the blues.

Josi got 9 pre pandemic. If Petro can get 11 million from teams that can’t pay the hot dog guy....... sure. Have at it.

But at 8.5ish it is very doable with

Hyman. Matthews. Marner
Soup. Tavares. Kapanen
Robertson Kerfoot. Barabanov
Engvall. Spezza. Xxxxxx

Reilly. Petro
Muzz. Holl
Sandin. Lehtonen

Nylander is a 31 goal/70’game player owed 2.5 mill this year and 5x4. He is easily worth a prospect package

Heck nylander for necas plus..... who knows. I’m not saying it’s the best idea. But it’s doable

Those guys signed for 3 and 4 year deals. The difference with Fabbri is that he got that money on a 2 year deal.

Mikheyev can sign a 3 or 4 year deal too, right?

The point is that it would be pretty easy for him to look at guys like Johnsson and Kapanen and think he should get just as much money.

Also, Fabbri and Mikheyev’s PPG is virtually identical.

Mikheyev does more than just score.

Is there any cap wizardry to be done? Taking a Big LTIR contract in order to sign Petro? Is that even allowed?

Yes and my point is that anywhere near the Johnsson/Fabbri/Kapanen numbers, the Leafs will not be able to afford him, Regardless of length.

And I never said those are the limits to Mikheyev’s ability, but when drawing comparables for forwards, points and points-per-game are usually the stats that are used.

If he didn't get hurt, maybe. But he did get hurt and he only played 39 games. His chance to make a case was by having a strong playoffs and he didn't do that.

Who can actually offer Petro 8M or more this year? I am curious what the Blues are offering.
I think he may have to do a 1 year deal and hit the FA market again.
No one planned for a flat cap.

That is so much riskier for a player rounding the 30 corner. Imagine he takes a 1 year deal and high ankle sprains, or a knee injury, or just has an off year. He could forego tens of millions long term. If i'm him I take 7.5-8M for 7-8 years over a risky 1 year deal.

the only ones in theory I can see who are competitive are Boston and Colorado. Both are possible.

1.) Boston would have to let Krug go. They also don’t do a lot of spending...... and their owner is in hospitality so is getting destroyed. I don’t see front end/SB which were a huge issue in STL apparently.

they already have Carlo/mcavoy on the right.

2.) colorado. Could as well. Petro would have to be willing to go to a divisional rival and they would have to go 4/4. Also Colorado apparently lost out on panarin because they wanted to be safe for Mack/Makar extensions.

the rest I don’t see.

which teams with space have any shot at winning or can afford to actually pay him?

Boston probably doesn't need him as much as most clubs. I'm pretty sure Krug is gone and with Chara going or gone they have more need of a lefty. I don't believe AP considers a west or central team if he has any options at all. What captain wants his old team to be a divisional rival? East or Metro and maybe a club we don't expect will be prepared to move bodies and make space.
People often mention Colorado with UFAs because of the cap space but they are not a high revenue team. If you want add a $10M player and you only net $9M per that requires some thought. If you think you are that one player away it makes more sense but that also crushes your profit margin for the next 8 years.

If Mikheyev wants anything close to what Fabbri got, he’s going to have to be moved.

I think Fabbri has the benefit of being younger and having more NHL experience. That is the only reason I can think of him getting that much money for only 2 years. He had a solid year on a terrible team, but he was pretty much a decent middle-6 winger like Johnsson was this year.

I understand the age thing, but I think the teams that offer him the money in the end may not be teams where he wants to play out his career.

That’s true, he definitely has a lot more potential, he’s been held back by injury most of his pro career

Taking on LTIR contracts does nothing for us now. Despite what guys like Button say it actually doesn't give you more cap space.

We had to add Clarkson to Horton's contract last year to get as close to the cap as possible to maximize our relief using LTIR should Marner hold out until December.

Adding thise deals when you're already tight to the cap puts us in the same situation as this year because Marner signed the day before camp. We would not be able to accrue LTIR money for the deadline.

Now, what we could do is go over the cap by 10% in the offseason and take a run at Pietro before trading any of Kapanen/Kerfoot/Johnsson and then go from there. If we get him you move those guys, if you don't you divert and go after secondary options.

Can't say I'm a fan of late 30's UFA wingers at this point even if there was cap room .. Seems like that could tie hands later on when it comes to re-signing Rielly and Hyman.

Mike Hoffman? I don't know what the difference in their expectations would be.

Hoffman is almost a direct replacement, Toffoli is more of a two-way greasy goal winger and only 4 years older which is what we’re in the market for

Adding another big contract to this top heavy team is the last thing we should be considering. Especially an aging one.
I'm not a fan of large contracts to begin with and the only one that deserves one is CMD 97.
This is the reason we are in this mess to begin with.
If you look around the league BALANCE is the successful formula on all levels. Teams can be competitive without top heavy superstars and in fact thrive.
This team has a lot of issues and bringing in one more expensive player will not fix what ails us.

It really depends on a number of factors. If Pietrangelo is willing to come here for somewhere around $8.5 mil per, maybe it's doable.

The assumption has to be, that Marner would get moved to do so... If one believes that Marner can bring in a number of assets that help us long-term, and give us more balance, we could actually reduce the size of the huge contracts on the team... But, that's a bunch of what ifs.

I think a straight up trade that helps both teams would be JT for Weber. I know it can't happen because of the no trade but that's a trade I would welcome. I think one of the high priced boys has to go. Marner is the logical choice.
The weight of that large contract and living up to it is causing him some problems. IMHO

I think the Leafs could leverage the fact that this UFA class has some options to improve the blue line, and move one of Nylander/Marner to help relieve cap space while also reloading the asset pool with picks/prospects. Along with moving some other depth for cap space.

Presents an interesting opportunity.
