Yeah, I get that they've had/have management issues but looking at their roster as currently constructed today and moving forward, how do you think they'd fare if they were to insert someone like a Laviolette?
Point being that I see them as being a few tweaks away and as opposed to a few years.

Honestly, I don't really know.

There's a lot of holes on defense, and their depth beyond their top-end talent is pretty lackluster.

Talbot has been a workhorse, but at 31 I'm not sure how long they can expect him to play 70 games per season.

There's potential there, but I also don't see a team with the type of depth required to compete with the league's best either.

Just because it's not being discussed here doesn't mean it's not being discussed.

Take a look in general at the success of picks drafted early in the 2nd round (first five picks, let's say). There's a reason that teams at the bottom of the standings are at the bottom of the standings.

Hate to say it but the NYR are gonna own the bottom of the standings.

OK, we're rebuilding but there is zero reason to not make a few signings via UFA.
You sign McCleod over Hartnell, Roussel Calvert or someone of the like?
How about signing Ian Cole over Claesson maybe?

These aren't crazy, over the top signings and NYR have cap space for days.

Instead JG did nothing!
He didn't even acquire a 4th line center.

Nieves, Holland? Pshh..

This either spells complete incompetence or TANK all the way to me and I have no respect for that.
I'm actually quite bitter over it honestly..

We really have nobody else, Hayes is the only option I can see. Don’t think Zucc even remotely is captain material. I really like him, but he is very lazy in practice and isn’t at all the leader type in all areas.

You are quite a comedian

But that's what I find interesting about this board. Some posters really impress me with their knowledge, while others may think they know everything but in reality have no clue.

I don’t mind keeping the powder dry.

31 teams in this league, a good 27-28 teams must make the POs or their season is seen as a big dissapointment. Which teams are fine with missing? Ottawa. We. Vancouver. Ari? NJ? MTL? Phi? Car? It’s not an exaggeration.

11-12 teams will be really disappointed when the seasons ends. Before October is up 2-3 teams will basically more or less destroyed their chances. Before December is up there will be another couple of teams who knows they are screwed. There are always some better teams that disappoint, Chicago did it this year.

If Gorton really is pushing it 1-3 months into the season it should be easier to make a move. Use that cap space.

I know the most and I am the smartest, and it’s perfectly possible that I have the best looking g/f too. ;)

On what you bolted, I think I might even find links on that too. He is known for being a slacker, he always competes in man-man duels. But he won’t lead the charge and drive up the pace in skating drills.

Three of those guys signed relatively expensive 3/4 year contracts, which the Rangers clearly want to avoid.

Not to mention there's zero indication that they were interested in signing here.

Not Hartnell. He still isn't signed.

I would have liked to be in on that over somebody like McLeod.

You mean in 2 years?
Our current #1 scored 13 5v5 goals and is a hit to the coconut from retirement..
With that said, I'm not even asking for much.
Just get a competent 4th line center..

No reason to not fill a couple of roles with players that actually know how to win, hard workers IMO.

I could go on and on but I'll give you guys a break lol

I think everything that we "know" about our players is about to change. With a new system new players will step up. I think Hayes can hit 60 points in Quinn's system, if he has that work ethic. I think with the right line combos we can finally tap into Zib's and Buch's potential. I think Lindgren in a season or two will be fantastic under Quinn. We are in for some fun hockey, maybe not this season, keep in mind Quinn will need some time to adjust. I don't want to here any Quinn slander until the trade deadline. After February i want to see improvement from the coaching staff. Be patient. A golden era is coming i can smell it, we have a great prospect pool, we have fresh blood behind the bench, and we have a great cap situation.

I didn't say we have great centers top to bottom, but we do have depth. Regardless of whether Zibanejad and Hayes step up as 1C and 2C, we'll be fine with 4 centers out of Zib/Hayes/Chytil/Andersson/Nieves, with Namestnikov able to step in if the kids don't stick in the NHL. I don't think that Gorton deserves flack for failing to sign an additional center in the offseason.

Na..Instead he'll continue to ignore the teams biggest weaknesses and keep signing LD..

You are completely missing the point. What does it matter if we finish above Edmonton or Buffalo? They have the needed ingredients to win a Stanley Cup. We don't. There is a formula that yields just about every Stanley Cup winner, and they have the main ingredients. They need to add much lesser ingredients to their team to be Cup contenders. We need to add elements that are almost impossible to acquire.
If they have the ingredients to win the cup and they finish behind us, do they really have the ingredients to win the cup?

Don’t get me wrong having their elite players would be fantastic, but let’s not act like we don’t see teams miss the playoffs constantly with high end talent.

And if they’re missing lesser pieces, why is it so hard for them to acquire them and become cup contenders instead of constantly struggling?

I didn’t say they have every ingredient needed. I said they have the hard part out of the way. We have the easy part out of the way. Who said it’s so hard for these teams to acquire the easy ingredients? How about you give them a few years and see where they are at?

How did we start arguing about the Oilers?

Not to mention the cost differential between Cole and Claesson, and the fact that even with our D line up Cole would be third pair.
