What's funny is Montreal, Toronto, Colorado, and basically every team who has a player we might want to pry away from has a need for a defenseman. Ironically, we have too many D men.
Babcock brought up Tyler Bozak, Nazem Kadri, James van Riemsdyk and Leo Komarov.
“They’re real good players,†the coach said. “And two of them or . . . any way you look at it, we can’t all be on the team as we move ahead. It doesn’t work like that. We have to figure out a way when you have opportunities to do what you can.â€Â

At this point I am more concerned with the 1C / 2C personal than I am who's at the bottom. But that's just me. I'm not a fan of the sum of the parts / depth with ok guys strategy. I think if your goal is to be competitive with Pittsburgh you can't go to war with Hayes v Malkin.

no one wants the dmen we went to trade away

There's a rumor on a Quebec website that Desharnais could sign a one year deal with the Rangers
There's a rumor on a Quebec website that Desharnais could sign a one year deal with the Rangers
The fact is that the 28-year-old defenseman made the Rangers an offer they ultimately could not refuse, $26.6 million over four years for a $6.65 million cap hit per. Yes, in a complete reversal of the norm, the proposal was made to the organization by the free agent even as other offers rolled into him for far more money on longer-term deals...".. This tells me the Rangers traded Stepan to get the young RHD and that they did not envision Shattenkirk coming here... I think Stepan is still here if they thoughf they had any real chance at Shattenkirk?.
Shattenkirk's desire to be a Ranger didn't come out of nowhere. The Rangers knew they had a chance and him and I actually believe that it was the plan all along to free up cap to sign him. What's to stop a little conversation between the agent and NYR before that talking period actually starts?
I'm mostly with this, but it seems like our big holes at the moment are a Top 6 Center and a Bottom 6 Center.
Particularly we now lack the "Shutdown" type center that Stepan was for the past number of seasons. Zbad is fine defensively, I have him in the Top 6. Hayes can still be a good offensive force, but like you said I'd hesitate to play him against the other team's top lines.
We all want to acquire the Premium Top 6 Center, but separately if we can get a good, defensively responsible 3/4 Center at a decent price, I think that makes us a better team.
Irony is that we have too many and most of them aren't getting traded. McDonagh isn't happening. Just signed Shattenkirk and Smith. Skjei is too valuable. Staal is a tough sell. Just Acquired DeAngelo. The rest are unproven and low value. Holden is alright but not returning a center (expect maybe a 4th liner.)
The salary cap+ Stepan and -DeAngelo and Klein would be about 5.5 mil.
They wouldn't be able to get Zibanejad and Fast under with that.
Of course they could have moved Nash to help with that, but its clear that the NTC was really their motivation to move him.
Desharnais is fine if he's on a short term cheap deal, he's solid depth.
