I know that he is preferred at W, but I think JT Miller has come a long way as a player, in terms of a more complete game, and could slide back to C. I'd hate to see them give up assets unless there is a bonafide top 6 C on affordable, multi-year contract coming back. With no moves made and moving Miller back to C:
Nash-Miller-Zucc
Kreider-Zib-Buch
Vesey-Hayes-Grabner
is not a terrible top 9
I'm confused if LV didn't retain any cap. Why wouldn't Chicago just have traded him to Carolina for a 5th?
Right but that should factor in the price.
5Y of Duchene @ 6M at age 26 is more expensive than 2Y of Duchene @ 6M at age 26.
Of course. But don't think it makes a huge difference honestly.

I'd be all over Kadri if he's somewhat available.. and at a reasonable price

Legit question: Would you pay up to a 3rd Round Pick to get Oscar Lindberg back?
There's your cost controlled, bottom six Center. Improves Faceoffs and the PK too.

Teams giving 30 year old players--like Vlasic and Oshie--8 year contracts is insane and those two players aren't even elite. Defensemen especially as they get into their 30's tend to get injured more--a couple major injuries in their 30's and it's pretty much career over. Marc Staal (who has yet to even reach 30) is a case in point--he use to be a premier shutdown defenseman--now he's like the old lady on the ramp leading to the highway who has everyone honking their horns and shouting obscenities at her because she can't get out of the way.
The Shattenkirk deal we just did was done right. 4 year term--it might be even that Kevin doesn't last that out but there's at least a pretty good chance he does.
Look at Crosby too--8 years left on his $8.7 mil per year deal. I think there's about a 1% chance that Sid can still play by the end of that stretch. The next concussion might finish him and that could happen any time. He's had several and he'll at least have another.
If you're going to hand out 8 year terms you give them to 25 and under players. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for disaster.
Then don't go to the main board. I should have known better but I couldn't help myself. Kadri is Duchene apparently. Bozak is a 2nd line center. The leafs don't have a cap issue even though they are over with 2 RFAs to sign. So Komarov will get more than Johansson because Leo won't be a cap dump. No matter what, the return better be a top 4 d and I guess the trading team has to retain 120%.
and Komarov speaks 1000 languages so a Johansson comparable is off.
I feel like Ivan Barbashev could be had from the Blues. He'd be a nice replacement for what we'd hoped for Lindberg
Hayes at the 2 scares me a lot.
He won't be, he's Babcocks #1 shutdown guy and he excelled in that role last season, he's pretty close to untouchable is my guess.
Trading for Kadri likely starts and ends with Leafs asking for McDonagh or Skjei.
Something has to give. The cap isn't adding up. At some point, Nylander and Marner get shifted to the middle. In 2 years they might be paying Matthews close to $9 or 10m, Nylander and Marner $6m each, and Kadri at $4.5m. $10m for your bottom 2 centers? $26m down the middle total? I guess you shift one of the two to wing.
List the untouchables on the Leafs: Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Rielly, Kadri? 5 "untouchables"? That's like half their cap in 2 years. $40 some million for the other 18.
