Different idea...what if they 2019 picked is fixed at second so Tampa can trade their first to Ottawa and instead we get one of their best prospects?

Possible.

But I get the sense Ottawa would probably want the top prospect moreso than the pick.

Can’t say the Rangers wouldn’t either, but I would guess Ottawa gets first “dibs” so to speak.

As the facilitator, but not necessarily the main trading partner, I would venture a guess the “fee” is probably a little more modest.

We always go one step beyond and end up setting ourselves up for disappointment.

We do it with trades, point projections, timetables, etc.

This is going to be a process. Suffering through 6 months of rebuilding does not a rebuild make — even if it is a hybrid or whatever term we want to take.

It doesn’t have to take 6 years. But it will take more than 6 months.

But we have Henke, who couldn’t save the Rangers last year. We have young players, which most of the teams ahead of us, who are more developed. And the new coach will magically have everyone on the same page right away. Reality is going to smack quite a few fans this upcoming season.

I think it’s a little but of denial for some.

It’s not fun to head into a season where your odds of competing are fairly low, and the young players you’re pinning your hopes on are still a little ways off.

If a good chunk of progress is made, I think next summer is when you start to sit back and say, “Hmm...maybe.”

Even accounting for the 10% increase allotted for the offseason, Tampa still won't have enough.

They have $4.5M in space, roughly, with only 11F and 8D signed plus both goalies.

That's not enough for a 12th F, plus Karlsson, plus space for emergency injury call-ups and whatnot.

Tampa has like 4 mill in space left at the moment.

Yes they can go over the limit during the summer and LTIR Callahan, but I would think they want him off the books ASAP.

I also think TB would want to lock him up and know things are set.

They’re playing for keeps in 2019 and 2020.

I’d also fully expect them to be in the market for modestly priced rentals as the deadline. Not blockbusters, but gritty depth guys at reasonable costs.

Yeah they're going to have to purge someone now and possibly 2 more people as early as next year once Kuch and Point get their new contracts.

People really need to look at how bad this team truly was after the trade deadline. That doesn’t go away magically.

Plus they're going to want to sign Karlsson long-term.

So...bodies/contracts are definitely being shipped out of Tampa.

They probably won't need to do it immediately, like Carp said. But they will need to do it before the offseason is over and the cap goes back to normal.

I still wonder if there is going to be any value found for Hayes/Zucc this summer, or if we'll have to wait for the deadline.

If TB doesn't move salary when trading for Karlsson they run the risk of a team taking advantage of them as the season gets closer and they lose of the overage cushion.
