I would be okay with the Rangers sending the conditional pick BACK to Tampa for them to flip it to Ottawa.

To Tampa:
Tampa’s Conditional second
Karlsson

To Rangers:
Callahan
Sergachev

To Ottawa
2019 1st, 2nd, 2020 1st prospects

I completely disagree. We're not Buffalo. This is a 'hybrid rebuild' we have assets in place already. Regrouped and ready to move forward.

We could be in the playoffs as soon as this year. Vegas was suppose to suck. Ottawa was not suppose to be there.. **** happens. What about 2-3 years from now?

We could, but the chances of that happening are almost 0.

You know that the teams that everyone picks to suck usually suck right? Our roster isn't going to magically get 20 points better by wishing it so, especially when we haven't even come close to replacing what we gave away at the deadline.

Vegas needs to stop being used as an example here too. They were able to pluck an entire top line between CBJ and Florida.

The Rangers are stocked — with assets that need to mature.

They’re not there yet.

I think there’s a also difference between competing and being in one’s best window. I fully expect the Rangers to be competing before they’re fully into their next window.

The window doesn’t necessarily open when they first turn that corner and get competitive. There’s growth and maturing that takes places even after the winning starts to happen with increased frequency.

Exactly. I don’t see Ryan being on the radar right now.

If it’s any contract, it’s Callahan’s. I don’t think it will impede any future moves either, because I think there are a few guys who will not be on the roster in a year.

The Rangers are not getting a “big” return on this, nor would I expect them to do it out of the kindness of their hearts.

Removing conditions on the previously acquired 2019 pick, and landing a good but not necessarily top prospect, along with maybe a late pick to play with, would be a solid return for two years of a beat up Callahan and no real interference on any (potential) offseason 2019 options.

Agreed. Taking Callahan is easily mitigated in the short term. Tampa has a number of good prospects in the AHL which means they're a step closer to the NHL. They're likely not getting a haul here, but a couple of picks to use and perhaps a good "second tier" prospect will go nicely with the rebuild. Adding Callahan gives them some more leadership in the room from a guy who has been here before. Not much downside here.

The Sens are not sending EK to Tampa for a pair of first round picks while we get Sergachev.

Some coherent defensive structure, young talent up front and Hank. I wouldn't be surprised if we make the playoffs.

I think you're kidding yourself if you think this team has regrouped and is ready to move forward. Sure, they could luck out and make the playoffs, but they're not competing with the likes of Winnipeg, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Washington, and Tampa for at least 3 years. Tampa is going all in to win in that 3 year window.

Zack Smith would also be a cap dump from Ottawa. Dorion could be looking to package him with Karlsson if he is going to be stuck with Ryan. That would save them close to $10m over the next three years.

Coherent defensive structure with sub par players will still be a bad defense even if it's better.Young, inexperienced talent and an aging Hank.

Again, they won't make up a 20 point window with those things in place. A lot will have to go right in order for them to even sniff the playoffs, as in almost everything.

I see the unrealistic hope for Sergachev has reared its ugly head. That’ll end well.

We always go one step beyond and end up setting ourselves up for disappointment.

We do it with trades, point projections, timetables, etc.

This is going to be a process. Suffering through 6 months of rebuilding does not a rebuild make — even if it is a hybrid or whatever term we want to use.

It doesn’t have to take 6 years. But it will take more than 6 months.
