but.... de haan makes no sense- he's another lefty. he would be a good get if one of the other lefty go (staal). fits the good skating, puck moving, reliable 2nd pair top minutes guy.

he could play as a righty- give it a shot anyway, probably would be no worse then staal or perhaps even brendan smith.

eventually we will be a team made up of just lefty dmen and swedes.

If Smith can get back to his 2016-2017 playing style, having him, De Haan and Skjei on the lef side would be a very solid group.
That is true and when one of the kids pushes we can move one as they are “moveable” players. My concern is what happens to Staal in this situation - did we magically trade him? Is he a healthy scratch (I just don’t see the org doing that)?

Ah yes, now that they've missed on all the guys they wanted to sign, and he's in demand, they'll give something up for Martin instead of being paid to take him

Splendid

Plenty of value in analytics. My view on Franson, however, is that he's always been an outlier and that his analytics didn't tell the real story on him. @silverfish and I have been arguing about him for years now.
I'd agree with you in theory if the sample was small enough, but we have thousands of minutes on Franson that shows he consistently suppresses attempts against, expected goals against, and actual goals against. I trust that. But that's just me.

I disagree. I think he would be a nice add as a 4th line veteran. In saying that, the only thing I'd give up is a prospect with little to no chance of making it (ala Fogarty)

doesnt fit the narrative. if were gonna go young, skill, speed and value, i dont see where he fits at all.

there are guys in hartford i would rather see step up and grab those limited minutes on the 4th line.

nathan horton is the dead cap space that they have to pay you to take...they aren't paying us to take martin. they will get something in return. there is always a team that will jump at a contract where the cap hit is higher than the actual $$ paid

Gorton and many others have stated they want to be harder to play against. Martin fits that

Obviously it's a slow time for the Rangers, but I'm fairly content with their approach thus far.

No big head scratchers (yet), plenty of cap room, not being rushed into bidding wars, etc.

Frankly, I'd like to have as much flexibility as possible heading into this season --- I think that's going to be the key for our long-term success. Whether it's taking on a contract at a livable term, continuing to stockpile assets, or even making final determinations on whether certain players will be here moving forward, I'm okay being more conservative at this point.

Part of me wanted to see -- and thought it was feasible -- for us to hit on forwards in the draft, sign Kovalchuk and Tavares, and then proceed on another run with Lundqvist into the playoffs.

But this is probably the better option -- really load up on draft capital and young assets -- then save your free agency wad for next year when it can be Seguin/Panarin/Karlsson instead of Tavares/Kovalchuk, and have another 2-3 young forwards acquired through next year's draft and trades, also.

I think it's even smart, as the team appears to be doing, to shop Hayes and see what haul he can bring in. I might even see if Zibanejad can bring back a massive deal.

I think Brendan Smith will turn it around this year. He's saying the right things, just had a kid and seems motivated. Plus this system will benefit him alot more than AV's. Staal is another story

If Staal can hang on as a third pairing defenseman, I'll live with it.

The contract isn't an issue right now, we need the veteran presence, and I'm not expecting him to turn water into wine for us.

How did the Rangers end up with so many low character players?

I mean they must be or else this pursuit of character players would not be deemed as important.

Or perhaps they have plenty of character, and are really looking for grit.

In which case that is a different story, bring back McLeod on a 1 year 1M deal as once that becomes less of a priority, like it does every season, they can at least scratch him and/or bury his contract.

Its pretty amazing with all the moves and we aren't involved. It seems that teams on the cusp realize it is realistic to to try win the Cup. So the heavy rumor involves EK. Did they offer him a contract in good faith or was it to get rebuffed by EK then able to save some face while trading low? If we have a chance with Ryans contract is it a long term move or is he available this trading deadline? I wonder if we get EK can we flip him to the Oilers and reap a bounty with money retained?

EK wants to live in NYC. Would never agree to be moved.
