As others have said, the average cap hit for any player on a NHL roster is well over $3m. The cap is no longer $60m. These contracts may seem high and like all UFA’s, they probably are, but this is the new norm

To be clear, the average cap hit isn’t $3.6m. It’s the maximum average teams can pay.

But ceilings act as magnets and UFAs have most of the leverage in negotiations. So for those players, their average is closer to that maximum than players in other situations.

Yeah, I’d take a flyer on some underperforming kids from some team looking to move on at some point. I am fine with that defense. I couldn’t care less about going for it this year or even winning in general.

Yeah I think the most important thing to do is figure out what they have in ADA. Is he a flop? A Schultz/Krug PP specialist? More? He's the biggest question mark in the pool for me right now.

He gets most of his money up front every season. For example, this year he’ll get $15M+ up front and during the year he will get bi-weekly paychecks that aren’t very much.

Thanks. As if he'd be living paycheck to paycheck otherwise. lol

Getting hurt when he was getting quality ice time did not help.

The benefit is all to Tavares. The contract is buyout proof as signing bonuses are not subject to the 2/3rds payout. If Toronto were to buyout the contract at any point, they would basically save nothing.

Also, if there is a lockout in couple years, Tavares still gets his money.

Makes sense. Thanks.

I get it, but it doesn’t really make much sense as there are only a handful of times that this will ever be the case.

It's really easy to spend money that isn't yours for a term when you probably won't be there to see the end of.

GMs doing moves for personal job security is a very real moral hazard.

But the RFA system is the way it is for a reason - to protect GMs from themselves. It's what the lockouts are all about!
