Can't buy out Roussel; cap hit is too low. And can only buy out Sutter if they go to arbitration with Virtanen.

didnt realize it was min 4mil for buyout. can still buyout sutter and demote roussel. if two 800k contracts replace, thats still 1.6 freed up.. leaving us with 11.6mil cap space

I would do Gaudette, Juolevi and a second for Schmidt. We'd also have to move salary elsewhere though.
Something along those lines..or insert Jake over Gaudette..

Might not be Schmidt..but there's going to be other teams off loading D men to get under the cap...

Just have to be patient.

Canucks have room.

Trade Jake for pick(s). There’s no way he should return anyway.

If they were in on OEL at 8.25M, you can sure as hell make Schmidt work.

Only reason why OEL was going to work was because they were going to take one of our bad contracts.

We can't acquire a 6m contract without unloading anything and losing picks and prospects. Those picks and prospects is what you need to unload the bad contracts in the first place.

Nate Schmidt is a vastly superior player to OEL on a vastly superior contract. If he is available teams will be lining up for him.

With a far less restrictive trade clause to boot. As it stands there were at least five teams interested in OEL.

I could see Vegas wanting Rathbone, would def fit their style of play.

Gaudette, Rathbone and a pick? Would do it if the pick was a 2nd, would not if it’s a 1st. Other teams would easily beat that obviously.
How will the Canucks fit a $6 mill cap hit in 21-22?

quinn and Petey at $18 mill.
Brock, Bo, Miller and Myers at $22.5
Ferland, Loui, Beagle, Roussel and Lu is $18.5 mill
Goalies assuming Demko plays well enough to command $3.5-$4 mill outs it at $8 mill.
That is $66.5 mill for 12 guys. $15 mill left for 11 guys.

cant oay Schmidt $6 mill and leave $9 mill for 10 guys.

Jake and Gaudette would likely combine for $4.5 mill.

Add Jordie Benn in a trade, even with some retention, and it could work. Jordie Benn with $500k retention is a net cap hit of $4.5M for Schmidt this season and saves Vegas over $5M.

Just how many demoted 1-way contracts will Aqua be willing to have in Utica this season when he might have zero ticket revenues to help pay all of his costs? Especially when there is no escrow withheld on NHL salaries for demoted players so he'd end up paying more $ to Roussel in Utica than he would if Roussel played with the Canucks.

Buying out Sutter also increases cap hit for the following season when they still have to ice a team and hand out huge raises to Pettersson and Hughes.

To tell you the truth I'd much prefer Schmidt on the Canucks over Ekman-Larsson any day of the week. Schmidt is a bulldozer on skates, who plays a sound defensive game. He'd be great against the bigger teams like Vegas who we had troubles containing. A Schmidt and Hughes as a pairing would be a fantastic number one. Screw Ekman-Larsson get Schmidt, who actually knows how to play defense.

Vegas has to unload around 8m if they sign petro. They aren't taking money back .

I do not understand how Vegas can sign Pietro without moving out cap first. Capfriendly has them at 2M in space.

Edit: Sounds like they just traded Schmidt to Florida, might mean Weegar could be available now

Vegas isn't going to trade Schmidt to a team in the West, especially not to a team in the same division. No chance.

Yikes get sense we are going to strike out all over this off season.
If you are expecting anything with term then Yes.

Canucks have to consider the 21-22 cap when the $20 mill from Pearson and co comes off but they have to replace those 4 roster places with someone then shift $16 mill over to Hughes and Petey.
