GDT: Free Agent Frenzy--9am PST, 7/1/15

Kings probably stick to their UFA motto, being quiet. But with $10M in cap space, I don't really know why not.

Is that true about the cap space? It's hard to keep up with cap geek gone. I thought I saw something showing that basically our current lineup plus a cheap backup goalie put us near the $71m cap

Sekera re-signs - Dean seriously overpaid! Terrible!
Sekera walks - Dean blew it. What a joke.

The life of a fan.

The 5 stages of grief. Like Hawk fans yesterday. What? Saad got dealt? That can't be right. I can't believe it's right! Fire Bowman! Well, I mean, I guess it's not awful. Saad did want a lot of money. But man, I am going to miss that guy. Instrumental in Cup wins. But we did get that one young guy, and who knows, maybe he'll replace Saad eventually. I'm actually kind of looking forward to the change. It could be fun.

Kings made strong push on Greiss but he went with Islanders instead

Oilers about to get Sekera. Curious to see the terms. Kind of upset we weren't in on Beauchemin at that money, to be honest.

Nvm, just realized he's 35...

and I think those were Handzus, Nagy, Priessing, Calder, and Blake(booo!)
4 of which where on the same day

No Blake. Brad Stuart was signed later, I think.

Remember Lakings.com that day? All four of them in big rectangular pictures? I wish I could remember the headline.

(Back then I thought Lombardi was collecting Trade Deadline assets -- you know, those journeyman pieces every club looks to add for the playoffs? And he was going to trade all those FAs in the spring and get a bunch of picks! That didn't happen either.)

McKeown and a first for 16 games.

Grats?

You say that like it's not abstract. We don't know what McKeown will or will not be in the NHL, and we don't know who will be taken with that pick. So right now, today, it's nothing for 16 games of Sekera. At the time, the plan wasn't for just 16 games of Sekera, and him getting hurt before the year ended.

If McKeown turns into a player, and/or if the 1st rounder turns into a player, then you can go back and look. Until then, "McKeown and a 1st for 16 games" doesn't mean anything.

One of the worst seasons for Lombardi as the GM. Wow. Not buying Mike Richards out and now losing a first plus McKeown for 16 games of Sekera. What a mess.

Sekera not on the Kings this year really pisses me off.

That is all

He wasn't going to be on the Kings, he was a deadline deal for a playoff/Cup push. And Dean did a heart over head on that , if he really looked at the team all year, they were lazy and uninspiried on too many nights, they weren't a playoff team, nor a cUp contender.
He wanted a LTC , at 6M , DL offered a shorter term at 4.8, that wasn't going to cut it.
He'll sign wiht the Oilers and be a good veteran presence for them, they are rumored to be signing another D as well. Also, the Oilers will be over that 7 or 8 year term a very good team for a long part of that and Cup contender.
But the Kings weren't in the picture.

He took a shot and missed. This isn't the Oilers but it was rather the defending champs.

End result sucks but still have no problem with the trade.

If he figured a way out of MR's contract and saved his company $22 million, that is one heck of a recovery.

Agreed but from what I've seen, I don't think it'll be enough to terminate that contract. I guess we'll see. Still a massive blunder of a season for Lombardi. Still praise him for what he's done but wow, almost a complete 180. I bet this is a year he'd love to throw out the window. Erase it completely from his memory.

Im only an arm-chair GM so excuse my lack of experience, but when you're in 'win now mode', I think you almost have to gamble like Dean has done. I dont absolve him of his mistakes, but I understand why he did what he did

I'll give him a mulligan on this one. It was the best play at the time to deal for Sekera. Didn't work out, so be it.
