GDT: Free Agent Frenzy--9am PST, 7/1/15

I'm not handwringing regarding these players potentially coming to the Pacific. Has to translate onto the ice and that's not a given. Also, the Pacific was the best division in 2014.

I am because these teams are specifically targeting their needs and fixing issues while simultaneously making us weaker.

Edmonton (or Colorado) landing a(nother) top pairing d-man in addition to all their youth is terrifying.

Some team I'm guessing Calgary landing Justin Williams on top of Hamilton and youth is terrifying.

SJ I'm ambivalent about, but they could make a splash too beyond Jones, and Anaheim is already a monster. The only saving grace is that Phoenix is tanking already and Van is in transition.

I don't worry about guys like Martin coming to the Division, or Sekera going with Edmonton, no big deal.

I can guarantee other teams were far more distressed with Lucic coming to the Kings and with what Calgary pulled off.

If Williams stayed in the division, it would concern me more.

100% agree with that, just getting anxious, we have a ton of question marks and moving parts while everyone else has clear issues with clear answers that they're working on today

Things change fast on UFA Day. Now hearing SJ no longer a top contender for Paul Martin. But COL will be in hard on Francois Beauchemin.

Of course teams in the Pacific want to get better. Some of the bigger disappointments in the league last year, as well as some up and coming teams that want to solidify themselves. That's why the Kings have to do as much as they can, while they can, because it's not going to last forever.

Paul Martin is going to get a huge payday. It's gonna be a crazy overpayment.

The $5m that the pens gave him was a HUGE oeverpayment. If he gets that much or more he is getting significantly over payed. Market sets the price though but there are going to be allot of unhappy fans wherever he ends up at those prices.

I'm with you. It's moving the needle. Does it make things more interesting that the mediocre get a little better? Sure, it's when the strong get stronger is when things are cause for alarm. Yeah, we didn't make the playoffs last season. Fluke perfect storm. Yet many, many are still counting the Kings as contenders. We'll see if our guys respond to this embarrassment. Let's be real, roster vs roster, I'm pretty confident in our bunch. I think we have a case of being a little too close to our team to actually see many fans would kill for it.

Free agency is a great illustration of how a shortage of skilled labor drives up wages. Everyone moans about "overpayment," but the bottom line is that the pool of available talent is small and as such there will always be upward pressure on wages. The salary cap is an attempt to stop that, obviously, but as long as you're relying on that pool of labor, "overpayment" is just a means to complain about "market value."

Nobody can ever quite judge that on July 1st. GM's will go out and do things that they think will fix their problems, but if that was a guarantee, nobody would ever be disappointed 7 months, or 3 years, or however long from now.

I could see the Kings being interested in Martin, but very short term and not for the money he is used to making.

Some of these UFAs better find a chair rather quickly. One of these times when he music stops the offers won't be anything they like at all.
