Easily, because to beat Edmonton's offer you have to go either go higher in AAV or longer in term.

That's 100% a non-starter.
I'm not sure about that. If we were correctly informed the club never made him an offer close to $4.5M. I don't think you need to necessarily outbid the market to keep your player, so long as he likes it there and you don't lowball. And if they did their math and knew Murray was $4.6M after retention maybe that offer is enough to keep him from even going to market. We'll never know.

I do agree being married to Jack long term is its own risk though. 5 x 5 is a big commitment to a player who was only a #1 for a single season and fell apart half way through. Edmonton has a kid they think might be ready to be a backup so they can maybe handle a bit more risk.

$2.75 for Lyubushkin isn’t expensive. You just can’t look at overall league salaries with the Toronto budget lens.
He's a bottom pairing D being paid like a low end #4 who wasn't on the PP or PK.

Literally cannot defend and is a one trick pony - who takes himself out of position often trying fort that one trick.

Malgin could be an option on RW if Simmonds is not.
Need out bottom 6 to be hard to play against imo. Aube-Kubel was a good step. ZAR should hopefully be next. Malgin is a small skill guy who doesn't throw the body at all and won't be on our PK. Not at all what we want or need imo
