This is comedic. Zito does what we accuse Dubas of and then we have some here trying to spin that being a good thing. God damn it. Florida essentially traded away all their futures in two years. They have three big contracts like us and their goaltending is not spotty, but it's also damn expensive and they have basicly no defense at the moment.

If that Florida team tanks it's unfixable for next GM. They have that #1 C, W, D and G covered, but they have no assets to build on that.

They're an Ekblad injury away from being bottom feeder level D.

They need to get *something* to help that D back from Hornqvist, nothing special but NHL quality.

I'm guessing the rationale for the Panthers is this:

1. They know this makes them worse in the short term (this season) but they believe they'll still be among the top teams in the East regardless, battling the Leafs and Bolts for 1, 2, 3 in the division.

2. The obvious longterm play is having a young star locked up for 8 years thru his prime.

3. They believe they can retool next summer with the 10.6 in dead cap coming off the books (5.3 of actual dead cap and Hornqvist's 5.3 of 'near-dead' cap) and the only player of any significance to resign being Knight. While true they are lacking futures they will have cap space which means soft deals and free agency will be viable options for them, hell Weegar could even be a Panther again this time next year.
Yup that is what I said also.. Panthers are playing the long game here with cost certainty and control.

They have 24 year old Tkachuk and 26 old Barkov starting their 8 years deals at $10+9.5 = $19.5 mil combined, That is an envious position to be in.

Leafs are on the focus but what is going to happen in Torornto in 2-3 years when all 4 of Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Tavares deals end? Who stays and who goes and at what cost do they stay at? We could have a situation where Matthews alone stays and takes up $15 mil cap compared to Florida have 2 stars at the time, Toronto might be a similar situation to Huberdeau of an expiring pending UFA in a year moved for assets as opposed lost to free agency. Leafs might be heading for these same shaky waters ahead,

Florida in 2 years after sifting through the tougher waves in the next 2 years trying to retool could be prime position to be the kings of the north Atlantic Div as their competitors sail into those rougher waters ahead.

If Matthews and Marner come in at 12.5-14M each, I can get my head around that, they're just a bit better.

JT likely gone or re-signs at a steep discount.

I don't see a world where we keep Nylander once his contract is up which is why I would have entertained more trades this off-season, 2 years of him is worth more than 1.

Though a sign an trade would be worth the most - ie what the Flames just did.

Luckily they are a place where players want to go.... and aren't Winnipeg. They can build a bit through UFA.

If we're only going to focus on the negative hypotheticals, we may as well discuss the possibility of Marner retiring at 26 or Matthews deciding he wants to coach instead of play moving forward.

Continually focusing on the negative things that could possibly happen is definitely one way to look at it. To each their own.

Though this "retooling" is easier said than done. They have little prospect or draft capital to draw in house development from (or to trade for roster players). So it's basically reduced to spending money on free agents (tougher when you have a 10 million dollar tandem goalie) - or more roster player for roster players trades.

Knight needs a new contract next year as well. It's currently an 11 million dollar tandem and will be a lot more next year.

If I was a Flames fan I would be terrified by this deal from their perspective because Huberdeau and Weeger could be 1 year rental players and I just dealt one of the best young powerforwards in the game at age 24 and signed him to give Florida an 8 year deal which likely brought down AAV.

What does Calgary have left a lottery protected 1st round pick 3 drafts away in 2025, when Matthew Tkachuk was #6 overall himself, if those players walk?

Calgary is going all in today this year, but they already lost their best offensive player Johnny Gaudreu for nothing and Huberbeau essentially replaces his offense but for 1 year potentially.

Flames look their going up in Flames and burning it all down.

Why wasn't this a sign and trade from both sides Calgary signs Tkachuk to the 8 years but Florida also gets Huberdeau inked to a new 5-6 deal at Flames price point, or at least agrees to an extention with Calgary prior to making this deal.

Ekblad also gets hurt like clockwork, so hopefully Matthew Tkachuk can moonlight as a number one defenseman.

*A player who forced his way out.

In return they received a top 4 defenceman and a 100 point winger that they can flip at the deadline for more assets if neither of them plan on re-signing with the Flames.

For a player that refused to play for the team, they did pretty well here. This is without mentioning the 1st round pick and the b-level prospect.

It's important to provide context.

Think of Weegar and Huberdeau as temporary asset storage. If things really go off the rails they could convert them into at least 4x young players/prospects and 2x first rounders if we assume a 2 player and 1 pick return, which is typical.

Trading them should almost be plan A..

If Flames are battling for a playoff spot do you still blow it up at the TD or add a go for it and then risk everything for nothing potentially?

Flames are coming off a top 5 and 111 point season and could be 1 year away from scorched earth rebuild while their 2 former stars are locked away at 7 and 8 year deals on new teams.

It’s possibly the Flames didn’t get their “futures” package they were looking for too. No need to settle for less on picks/prospects.

they could convert Tkachuk into three first rounders, a couple of young roster players, and couple of A prospects (in addition to the B prospect they got).

Quite a haul!

Here's the thing though.

2 weeks ago the Calgary Flames Plan A was to back the Brinks truck onto Johnny Gaudreau's lawn and lock him up for the next 8 years. And rightfully so. Gaudreau is a 1993 born left winger who just came off a 115 point season. This might fly under the radar a bit, but Johnny Huberdeau also happens to be a 1993 born left winger who just came off a 115 point season. So in essence they took a downgrade from Tkachuk to Weegar, 1st and a prospect but replaced Gaudreau's production entirely.

Right now it looks like they have $9.3 million in cap space. So they could go out and bring in Nazem Kadri if there's a fit, and then let Monahan's $6.3 million and Lucic's $5.25 million run out next summer, and have room to re-sign both Huberdeau and Weegar if they like it there.

So if things go well on the ice to start next year, they don't need to rebuild at all. They could just be a strong veteran team for the next few seasons.

Mangiapane and Kylington need contracts, so they won't have much cap space for Kadri. Unless, of course, they unload Monahan with a sweetener

Poster one - so glad we got giordano at 38 years old. He still has a lot of skill and helps our top 4

Same poster- Calgary gets huberdeau. Poster says huberdeau is getting old and possibly only one good year left and not worth his contract at 30 years old

Florida is one major injury to injury prone barkov and ekblad away from a disaster.

Bennett and duclair won’t score as much next year without huberdeau.

1.) giordano is signed for 800k. No one would want ro
Sign him for long term big money. He also won the Norris at 36 so it’s pretty disingenuous to take one of the best aging players in the cap era to compare. People here are worried about Tavares at 31-34. So it’s not a crazy double standards

2.) absolutely they are an ekblad away from disaster. Hill might be their best D after him. Their D is our bubble defence without rielly and muzzin

3.) ducliar has one leg and Benny was a 30 pt player pre hubderdeau.

None of this is controversial or shows bias. It may not ultimately turn out to be correct. But it’s pretty logical

It's weird. You have the same guys that defend Dubas, being critical of Zito. It's hard to keep up.

I like that we're not allowed to judge a Leafs trade for a few years. Way too early to draw conclusions. Can we at least see him play first.

Same posters within minutes of a trade happening elsewhere in the NHL.

OMG team X clearly won that trade. I have no idea what team Y is doing. They got screwed.

Lol

You have to think Huberdeau is worth 2 firsts (or equitable value) at the deadline, no? Especially if they eat half his salary. A top line player for $3M

Random off topic question. I trust you and another user on goalies the most here, so do you think Murray/Samsanov are salvagable? Anything you see that gives you confidence? Personally I'm confident but more gut feel more than anything.
Not even talking about the trade because thats seperate.

Why would Florida retain 50% of a $10 million deal?
Well it was a hypothetical question simply based on what if both options were available..

However Leafs already made their choice so it couldn't happen even it were possible.

The logic behind it though is they just acquired Tkachuk and signed him for $9,5 mil which puts them $3.3. mil over the salary cap limit. If they were to pick of $5 mil of goalie Bob they would be cap compliant and still have room to sign a cheaper backup. Goalie Bob lead the NHL in wins 39 and was 4th in Goals above expected +23.4 with a respectable 2.64 GAA and .913 sv% so there is no reason to dump him other than for cap reasons as he is their starting goalie, that was the tip of the spear of their record setting 122 point President's trophy season, as he only had 7 regulation losses all year in 54 starts.

Neither of Leafs current goalies came anywhere near goalie Bobs stats so I thought is was an interesting question, in Leafs search for a starting goalie.

However the answers were just as interesting in that the consensus was it would be easier to get out to the Murray contract if things went south, as opposed to picking the goalie with the good stats coming off a strong season in hope it helps the Leafs win in the playoffs at a similar salary cap price point $5 mil vs $4.68 mil.
