Correction, Filip Kuba's buyout from FLA is not a compliance buyout. Regular buyout. Buyout $ count against the Panthers' cap.

Richards is not going to play wing. He will be a center.

Based on what, Rangers have a very long tradition of taking centers and shifting them to wing once they are past their prime. Just look at Prospal, Straka, Nedved, Lindros, Rucchin, and even LaFontaine. Any good coach can see Richards looks lost in the defensive end and speed is not a strength, switching him to the wing allows him to focus on offense and creating plays. I fully expect him to be put on the wing. Stepan and Brassard are 1st and 2nd line, not 3rd line material and if they decide to use Richards on the 3rd line I expect he will fail.

What is a regular buyout and could we do that with some dead weight?

Richards is the dead weight, this team got rid of Redden, who else will we buy out Dorsett or Powe? Not creating much space, I am sure they could be traded at some point or waived. If we want to open space they need to trade someone with some salary, unfortunately that is going to be a defenseman named Del Zotto, Girardi, or Staal.

Columbus is not far away from making noise as a playoff contender. They are hard to play against and play the game hard. People who haven't seen them play will have their eyes opened when they play the Rangers this season. Big, physical, in your face team. I hope the Rangers are able to withstand the punishment because teams like Philly, Pittsburgh, NYI and Columbus are all very big, gritty teams.

Philly has Simmonds, Rinaldo, Hartnell, Schenn, Coburn, Grossman

Pitt has Kunitz, Glass, Engelland

CLB has Dubi, Umberger, Foligno, Boll, Prout

NYI has Boulton, Carkner, Martin, Clutterbuck.

The Rangers have Dorsett and Asham. Looking good.

ummmmm STAAL!?

Rangers could definitely use a little more toughness in their top 6, that's for sure. Cally's probably our most aggressive player but he's not scaring anyone.

I'm not on board with re-signing Clowe due to his injuries/lack of footspeed, but we can definitely use someone like him. Too bad those players usually get overpaid in FA, not like we have the cap space anyway.

In a post to*twitter, Larry Brooks writes that he spoke with Ryan McDonagh’s agent about the state of negotiations going on between him and the Rangers. His agent said that there is still work that needs to be done to get McDonagh under contract.McDonagh will become a restricted free agent on Friday and can elect to take the Rangers to salary arbitration. It has been expected that Ryan McDonagh*will sign a deal that has a cap hit over $4 million like I said.. 4.5 for McD, Stepan for 3.5, 2m for Hags. 10m out of 14m we have in space, those are the important ones to get done. Others can absolutely be replaced with better or cheaper players

Agree with all of this. I've been stressing this point across several threads. The Rangers need to get bigger and meaner, sooner. This needs to be a priority.

I'll ask this question again:

Who do you guys think are the best young big men on teams that would be willing to discuss a deal with us.

The problem with signing McDonagh and Stepan to those bargain caphits likely means it'll be a short term deal (2yrs). They're going to get an inevitable raise into the 6mil+ figures after these bridge contracts. I'd prefer if they can look both players 6+ yrs at 4.5-5m per.

Cap is likely to go up too though and Richards and most dead weight will be gone. Pitts makes it work. But hey if they can lock them up like that fine. I'd find another way to create cap space then.

I have said it countless times, but Cody McLeod from Colorado makes sense.

My fear is that a team with cap space (like the Islanders) comes out and offers McDonagh like 7 years, $45 million (or more).

Of course we match but Jesus, that's rough in the short term.

He wants to be a Ranger and I think he knows the Rangers are willing to pay him more than fair. Also, I'll be dawned if I would match that, we have gotten by and were competitive with much worse

He won't sign an offer sheet. It's a non issue.

I tend to agree. Even so, I doubt the Islanders would try this because they will have tons of RFAs soon.

Any team with the likely cap space to do this kind of move will have RFAs coming up soon with the Rangers having cap space. I retract my worries.

yeah an economic powerhouse like the Rangers is not a good idea.. Also, the Rangers only have 4 players signed after next season...bad idea.

Per James Mirtle.

Pretty quiet on free agency front - many teams not in huge hurry to act during new window. Keep hearing "lot of teams trying to shed money."

-NY Rangers: I don't believe any of those "Rangers won't be players in free agency", you can't take Glen Sather out of free agency. I could see him making a move to add an UFA. Guys like Stralman, Del Zotto, Boyle etc. could be shipped out.

Rangers need more toughness and more balls. Too many times over the season the team looked dead and lifeless, they need guys with edge. Not sure how popular this is, but some other poster suggested a Carcillo-Lapierre-Dorsett line, I'd be all for that

No decision should be made tonight by Daniel Brière. List of teams is now down to 6 teams. #RDS

Except in 2010 and 2012. In thos years, he signed Frolov (one year gamble), and three fourth liners. There's no one in UFA worth going after.

Doubt any of our defenseman are moved. Maybe Boyle. That's about it.
