Does anyone think de Haan might be our backup plan if we don’t land Chychrun? He’s still un-signed and seems pretty serviceable as a stay at home D
Which of these is he an upgrade on?
Holden, Sanderson, Hamonic, and Zaitsev? How much is he an upgrade on those guys?

He’s not as bad as most project him to be here…. Especially for $2 million.

We don't need serviceable, we need a clear cut top 4 guy. We already have 7 D, plus JBD and Thomson as callups. de Haan doesn't really do much for us right now.

A clear cut top 4 guy that is a measureable upgrade on what we have likely isn't achievable. There are cap issues and assets going the other way to consider, along with contract duration
I think we've got a very solid top 9. Definitely playoff calibre when weighed against the top 9s in the east. We've got a serviceable goalie tandem and if one of them has an injury free good year, we'll be ok.
That leaves D. We've got Chabot. We're definitely stronger than we were last year having pushed 109 games played by Mete, Brown and MDZ out of the lineup. We don't have a top 8 D in the conference if we assess against history. But it's August so we project. We might get big things out of Sanderson and we might get quality games played out of the two rookies. We also might get a step up out of Brannstrom. All projections of course, none of them unreasonable and the only one we need is Sanderson
There seems to be some split thinking this year. I think the consensus view is we are a bubble team that can't do playoff damage yet at the same time guys are clamouring to get that top 4 RD, almost regardless of cost.
I agree, I think Calgary is in a desperate mode of 'win now' despite having an objectively worse roster this season than last (and last year's team clearly wasn't good enough). Regardless, I think they intend to compete and will keep Weegar for sure.

I really dont think its that much worse. Weegar is a legit top pairing D man and will be the best D man on that team. Huberdeau is a better player than Tkachuk or Gaudreau. If they can flip one of their D man for another player or cap space to sign Kadri they're a better team. I think whats happened with Huberdeau is really going to light a fire in him. Gaudreau also isnt a guy you win with as your go to guy, Phil Kessel 2.0. This could really be a good thing for them at the end of the day.
How well can Zadorov play RD btw, says he can play both. Thats the kinda D man the sens are missing if he can play the right side.

By the time they’re 22 they won’t be on ELC’s and we won’t be able to add much aside from their increases in salary.

If it's a cash out scenario before we add another player, then moving Zaitsev is the challenge. Seems like moving a cap dump is costly these days. And then we want to acquire a good RD to play in the top 4 along with having our trading partner take Zaitsev. That won't be easy and will be costly. No wonder things have slowed down and we aren't hearing much. We still have a couple of RFAs to sign (or move maybe) as well. Its going to be interesting to see what happens, or doesn't happen.

He also wants to be here.... Just finishing building a home in Manotick. I just dont see the spot without dumping Zaitsev. Id be very happy if they could make that switch. He is solid.

Bonus is paid at 2.5 m its still a total of 4.5 m / year ... Should make it easier to move him... the receiving team gets a cost reduction

I'm ok with waiting and potentially going into the season with what they already have. Sounds like Chychrun is going to be expensive and with training camp starting up there could always be surprises, hopefully here, but also on other teams which could open up new trade options. No reason to rush into a Chychrun trade and overpay.

Yeah, seems reasonable to think that some of the offers on the table (not just from the Sens) involve players in the WJC, and Arizona is watching the players closely in that event before pulling the trigger on the deal.
