Wilson's a Gary Roberts trainee, IIRC, so don't think McPhee would be referring to his off-ice conditioning. Maybe there are some maturity/professionalism issues?

I really hope he's spouting the typical McPhee misdirection about the current team, and is working on some kind of improvement.

Whatever. Most of us have been resigned for some time to the fact that as long as McPhee is GM this team will never win ****. So why be outraged? This is just as expected.

There's attempting to move in the right direction in any capacity whatsoever and then there's this.

Don't think so. What you see is what you get. He's going to roll with a fringe playoff contender, which has a phenomenal history of failing in the post season.

The good news is that team was a fringe playoff contender in the Southleast. In the new alignment, we're Calgary.

Hopefully they miss, and Ted pulls his head out of his ass before Ovie gets much older.

I can't believe gmgm actually compared Laich to those other players. Wtf he couldn't fit Kesler on the list?

With lower expectations that come with the wizards, they should be at least fun to watch and probably make the playoffs. Not sure if that helps kill caps attendance though.

Where are people getting that Laich is 31? He just turned 30. Not that there's a huge difference, but there is one.

If the return to MVP form isn't just a one year aberration, Ovechkin will cover up some of the team's weaknesses during the regular season, just as he has for much of his career.

With MVP-caliber Ovechkin, this team makes the playoffs easily. That'll reassure GMGM that his approach was correct and he'll write off the probable playoff failure as bad luck, starting the cycle over again.

So frustrating.

the more i read about it, the more i think about it, the more i feel that Grabovski might/SHOULD happen....the ideal #2 Center, at a discounted buyout price, and a russian one at that....

Can we start discussing next year's draft prospects because I think the Caps might actually draft in the top 5?

The talk of the capitals lineup for next season got me wondering how that would stack up against the champs from this year on a point/point per game pace. You can't really extrapolate a whole lot, especially because of the limited play from laich and erat, but here's the results. (Chicago roster taken from one of the finals GDTs on the hawks board)

Blackhawks

Bickell-Toews-Kane
Sharp-Handzus-Hossa
Kruger-Bolland-Frolik
Saad-Shaw-Stalberg

----- QUICK SUMMARY -----

- The caps top line produces at a marginally better rate
- The caps second line...ouch. They are going to need to step it up, but really that looks like a solid third line to me.
- The caps actual third line looks pretty good.
- The fourth line needs to produce a little more as well. Having Saad down there skews the results somewhat, but beagle and volpatti/wilson need to score a few more goals
- The top two left defense on the caps don't contribute offensively at all.
- The hawks have a scoring pair on d while the caps split their scoring d up.
- The third d pairing is pretty similar offensively.
- There is a huge difference in the goaltending numbers.
- It would be interesting to compare some individual fancy stats as well since this is just an offensive comparison.

Unfortunately, next year's draft is shaping up to be much weaker than this year's draft. This year was really the year to sell at the deadline, but we obviously didn't do that. So even if we are sellers at the deadline next season, which is looking more likely, we may not get any NHL-ready players. The 2014-2015 draft should be better.

I am a bit concerned that the new division/realignment will hurt our players' stats, and therefore their trade value. Looking back, we may wish we had sold Green, Brouwer, and/or Holtby when their value was high.

That tweet about Wilson is misleading. I listened to the press conference and McPhee said that about all the prospects in general, not about Wilson in particular. He talked about "how to carry themselves as a pro" and "nutrition".

He said Wilson has put on a lot of weight since the end of last year (in a good way, judging by the way he said it).

Heres most of what he said (not quite word for word)

9:03 - 10:18 McPhee press conference

How do you, in this camp with a kid like tom wilson who made his debut in the playoffs obviously is big for his age, how do you evaluate someone like him when hes someone whos likely going to contend for a spot.

I don't know were evaluating him as much on the ice as we are off the ice a little bit, checking up the maturity level, how much they've trained. This is an opportunity for us and these are summer conditioning camps. We're trying to educate the kids while they are here on all kinds of things, how to carry yourself as a pro, nutrition and its just an opportunity for our coaches to get to know some of these people better because we don't have that many opportunities during the season so not sure we're evaluating tom wilson on his play out here. we know what he can do on the ice we've seen it and we just want to measure how hes come along here and hes come along great. He's in fabulous shape he's put on a lot of weight since the end of the season and the body fats low so its good weight. So that's what this process is all about.

The tweet does seem a bit misleading.

What George said about Wilson makes good sense. Everything else he said was idiotic.

So frustrating.

And then when they get blown out in the playoffs again everyone will point to Ovechkin's leadership being crap rather than the roster being held together with duct tape.

I don't usually pine for players to be traded just because they "deserve" a better situation but when Ovechkin is on there is simply no other player in the league as entertaining to watch. Killing him alive here almost seems like a mockery of the sport.

I would rather have Brooks Laich than Grabovski if they are close to the same cap hit.

Maybe as a LW or a 3C but no way in hell as a 2C. Grabovski is faster, better at carrying the puck through the neutral zone, better at playmaking even though he's not really a playmaker, better at scoring. Defense is a coinflip, if Laich's is better it's because he plays it safer on D rather than pushing more on O. Plus Laich now has groin problems which aren't really the best of news for guys expected to play a physically involved style.
