They clearly want to get out of the Norris contract. When I post a trade idea, it's not always "Wouldn't this be so awesome to go out and get Carson Soucy because he is one of my fav 5!" that everybody would obviously agree with, it's more speculation based on rumours (some less than reliable, some more).
It is obvious they want to get out from the Norris deal. New Jersey just lost their 1C and is in the middle of a playoff run. The Senators have been tied to Nelson but don't have the assets that he will cost. So it's basically, flip Norris with retention for those assets, flip those assets for Nelson.
Most people in this thread think that the Senators should do the following:
- Maximize their future assets.
- Don't acquire rentals because they are asset poor. Even if it lowers their chances of making the playoffs this year.
- Keep Norris, because he is still a good player, and they don't think the team should be concerned about the liability of his money and term.
I am not saying those opinions are wrong, but they don't seem to be in line with the reality the team is operating in. They badly need to make the playoffs to satisfy multiple stakeholders (Season-seat members, ownership group who needs playoff profits, Tkachuk family who are in tight with the hockey illuminati, etc). If they stand pat at the deadline, and miss the playoffs by a point, what is Papa Tkachuk going to decide Brady should do? They also have been heavily rumoured by multiple different sources to want to cut bait on the Norris contract.
