I don't think Lafreniere is a fit here unless he can move to center. He would suffer similar problems to what he does in New York. Too many left-handed forwards, and he would be stuck behind a franchise left winger. Call it the Debrincat syndrome.

Teams can only have so many 7M-8M players. Wasting another slot on a gaudy player who we don't need was the kind of move we made twice under Dorion, first with Debrincat, then with Chychrun.

With that said, if you approach the trade from the perspective that they think the should of Norris will be a major issue going forward, and the trade is a trojan horse to dump the contract - it's understandable. Swap Norris for Lafreniere, and figure out how to balance the lineup later.

The reason Lafreniere made sense as a piece in a package for Tkachuk, in the scenario that we were a basement team again and they had reason to believe Tkachuk would want out after his NMC activated, would have been because it's a LW for LW. With Tkachuk out, Lafreniere would have been in a position the be the #1 winger. With Tkachuk here, it doesn't make much sense.

With all that said, I don't think Lafreniere for Norris is that crazy when you consider Lafreniere's costly extension and his play so far this season after signing it. It would be the definition of a change of scenery trade.

If we are making a move for a RD (personally I don't think we have the assets for it) we should be targeting David Savard. He is perfect for the third pair. Montreal brought in Carrier to make him expendable.

Cap is $1.75m at 50% retained.

What about Reimer from Buffalo? He’s having a pretty good year. We could bury Forsberg and it would come out to essentially a wash. Would be relatively cheap to acquire, only 1-year remaining, and gives us a legit reliable backup.

Edit: my math if off about it being a wash. We’d be adding about ~700k in this scenario. I’d consider that a huge win for upgrading the backup position though.
If Forsberg clears waivers and then is assigned to the AHL, then the cap hit will be $2,750,000 - $375,000 =$2,375,000.00
So, if you add Reimers cap hit of $1,000,000 plus Forsberg's $2,375,000 cap hit, you’d be adding $3,750,000 to the Senators cap.

The explanation of the rule is below.

The amount of Cap Relief that a team gets from assigning a player to the AHL is the lesser of their Cap Hit and the NHL Minimum Salary + $375,000 (Buried Threshold). Therefore, if a player with a Cap Hit less than the Buried Threshold is sent down, their full Cap Hit no longer counts on the Team's total cap hit. If a player has a Cap Hit greater than the Buried Threshold, if they are sent to AHL the team's Cap Hit is the player Cap Hit - Buried Threshold. The Buried Threshold is as follows:

I think you’re forgetting that it’s the NHL minimum salary + 375k that can be buried for a total of 1.15m. So if Reimer comes in and makes 1m, we save 150k, no?

You said you would “bury" Forsberg. I’m assuming you mean bury in the AHL. Forsberg’s salary less $375 k would still count against Ottawa’s cap even though he’s been waived to the AHL.

Hypothetically, if they buried Forsberg, he could be claimed by Carolina - if the rumours are true that they have an open offer to acquire him, and if we assume that offer doesn't involve Ottawa taking back money.

Reimer is playing well for Buffalo right now. With how few goalies are available, if he keeps this up they might be able to get a 3rd for him from a desperate team. Forsberg being a marketable asset at this cap hit, and Ottawa not sending him on the next train to Carolina should illustrate what kind of market we are in with goalies.

No its 1.15m that can be buried. It’s in the article you sent.
OK, but you seem (?) to be assuming that Forsberg’s salary would get erased.

Yes, it was the bolded part as follows: If a player has a Cap Hit greater than the Buried Threshold, if they are sent to AHL the team's Cap Hit is the player Cap Hit - Buried Threshold.

Forsberg’s salary is greater than the buried threshold, therefore its: $2,750,000 - 1,150,000 =$1,600,000.00. So, $1.6 m of Forsberg’s cap hit plus Reimer’s $1 m. Hence, your idea would add $2.6 m to the Senator’s cap. Sorry for the earlier error.

Right now we have some cap space because Zub is on LTIR. That cap space will disappear once Zub returns. So, the Senators need to either subtract player/players in order to add another player to their roster, or put another player on LTIR. The LTIR scenario will work until that player comes off LTIR.

Sounds like Carolina should talk to Buffalo about Reimer then. LOL.

People love dealing with hypotheticals I guess. Reimer only gets paid $1 m versus Forsberg’s $2.75 m.

I’m not assuming Forsberg’s salary would be erased. What I’m saying is that if we buried Forsberg we would get 1.15m in space. If we added Reimer it would cost 1m. That would be a net gain of 150k relative to our current position.

Forsberg buried and Reimer acquired is money in/out since the buried cap relief covers Reimer's cap hit.

The point about him being claimed was more meant as don't assume we could just assign Forsberg go the AHL since he may not pass through.

OK, I get what you're saying now. looking at this in a certain way, but it seems a little strange or tangental. To simplify, I’m just looking at this from the perspective of the impact to the Senators cap. By adding Reimer & moving Forsberg to AHL, there would be an increase of a $2.6 m impact to the Senators cap.

Edited.

PuckPedia says we have about negative $158k of projected cap space (when Zub moves off LTIR). So, if this trade were to happen quickly, even with these moves, we’d still be a little over when Zub returns.

If people want to talk about Reimer being theoretically available, then theoretically the Canes could be interested in Reimer seeing how Reimer’s salary is considerably less.

If Forsberg is placed on waivers, then he could clear waivers as well, and the Senators would be stuck with the cap ramifications.

Theoretical stuff is fun.

You are very passionate about James Reimer trade proposals.

What?

Burying Forsberg clears up 1.15 mil (the remaining 1.6 stays with the team unless he's claimed)

Bringing in Reimer adds 1 mil in cap hit

So from an Ottawa perspective, we'd open up 150k of additional cap space by making these moves,

Especially with Perron injured for the foreseeable future, kakko would have been a nice add. Best case, he had chemistry with Stu, worst he'd have been 3rd line depth.

I said Increase, but that is the wrong word. I’m saying there’s still $2.6 m counting against the cap (Forsberg’s $1.6 m + $1 m for Reimer).

So, yes there is a net gain, but that doesn’t look like enough per below.

Right now we have $3.78 m of current cap space, but that’s because of Zub’s LTIR. When Zub returns, we’ll have negative $158,800 of Projected Cap space. So in making these moves (currently as in right now), we’d still need to find some cap space.

If we move out Forberg for Reimer, we'd also return Merilainen to the AHL,

We also can likely throw Perron on LTIR, or return Reinhardt and or Ostapchuk if Perron is ready to return.

Yes, that’s true about Merilainen. There’s 2 assumption at work here. This assumes a team takes Forsberg and we acquire Reimer somehow.

We have a couple of Belleville forwards inserted in the lineup now because of a couple injuries to roster players. As for Amadio and Perron’s injuries, hard to say what will happen, so I wasn’t even going to begin to speculate.
